7/24 Munchie 128AMPS - Newbie Advice please

I was finally successful in getting my first reading Friday night. First shot I gave her of Lantus was Sunday PM 7/17 (she'd been hospitalized with dka so they started her I believe Sun am on Lantus). She's on just under 1 unit starting 7/23; was 1u prior and I gave 2 closer to .5 7/21 PM and 7/22 AM. What I have so far is :
7/20 6 hrs after (at vet)- 90
7/22 PMPS- 301 (had given closer to .5u 7/21 PM and 7/22 AM)
7/23 AMPS- 252
7/23 6 hrs after shot- 206
7/23 PMPS- 204
7/24 6 hrs after shot - 307
7/24 AMPS- 128

Any help with understanding would be great. I haven't given insulin this AM due to reading and had originally thought I'd do more tests today to get more data but since I haven't given insulin that won' help with seeing how she responds right?

I would still test and, if Munchie's number go up soon, you may want to consider giving a shot. You would be stalling. However, it also means you will need to migrate your shot time back in small increments (15 min. twice a day or 30 min. once a day) to get back on schedule.

Just a word of caution. With a cat that has been through DKA, insulin is very, very important in order to prevent another episode. Are you testing for ketones? If not, please pick up a pack of Ketostix. Pretty much any pharmacy will have these and they are inexpensive. It's a urine test (stick the strip in your cat's urine stream) that will tell you if ketones are elevated. Also you want to add water to Munchie's food. Water will help to keep ketones flushed from her system.

Would it be possible for you to put together a spreadsheet? It will help you keep track of Munchie's test data and we won't struggle to know what her numbers have been. This is the link to the instructions in the Tech Support forum.

Just tested 1 hour after eating and now is 182...Called vet and they said to give dose. Just did and gave her more food. Will now monitor her BS throughout day.

Black Kitty has been there (DKA) twice - we came very very close to losing him. To this day we continue to add water to his food, even though he has not needed insulin since 10/2009. Checking for ketones using the Ketostix is very important for early detection - you don't want a repeat of DKA.

Once you get a spreadsheet set up you will get a much better understanding to how she responds, along with helping others here to best be able to help you.

I've been in the same place with Gabby when she was diagnosed and like Sandy, came very close to losing my kitty. Even though we've not had a recurrence, I still will get a ketone test when I catch Gabby in the litter box. And, like Sandy, I add water to her food. It's not only good for keeping ketones at bay, adding water is good for kidney health.
