I always find it interesting when 2 of her numbers are the same in a row. But about how many more cycles until the Lantus kicks in?

Also, I still have the question about the bladder infections. Will those decrease in frequency as she gets regulated?

Everything else seems to be going well on this end. :) I will be asking my grandpa to pick the cats up some Special Kitty though. I'll be looking at the food list in a moment, so when I do switch over(there's 2 more cans left of Friskies) there will be a slight drop overall in bG, since I did a trial run a while ago and it dropped her bG a decent amount.

The answer...quite possibly, yes!
There is a point (usually around 220, but ECID) called "renal threshold". This is where the kidneys start taking glucose from the blood and excreting it into the urine. The urinary tract is a prime breeding ground for bacteria. Throw 'sugar' in the mix and it increases the chances of infection. Once BG's go below renal threshold, there is one less contributing factor. The catch 22 (in my experience) is that an infection can affect BG's, often causing them to be a little higher or erratic. If you are treating it with the proper antibiotics things should eventually get better.

Here is some info on the renal threshold, if you are interested:

Hi Cindy

Sorry I didn't get back to answer your questions last night. I see Carolyn has addressed one but I'd also like to address it as well as your other question.

I think that I'll just keep going with the vet for this time, but after that, only go when needed, which may or may not be often with how Tip gets bladder infections now. By the way, will the frequency of those go away as I get Tip regulated? Or will she always be prone to that?
Another question, should I get a +6 number after the pmps as well? Or am I fine with the small curve I've done today enough to not need it? Either way I can. Just curious.

On the bladder issue......how do you know she has bladder infections? Has she had a cystocentesis done where the vet did a culture and sensitivity (C&S) and found bacteria? That's the only way to diagnose a bladder infection. As Carolyn stated, bladder infections can be more prevalent in FD due to the sugar but if she was having them before she was diagnosed and they've never done a C&S, then she might just have sterile cystitis. What kind of treatment do they do?

It's always a good idea to get a number after the lowest part of the curve whether it is +6 or, for some cats, +4. You want to have a rising number after the lowest number. However, if kitty is within normal range (50-120), I strongly urge two rising numbers not influenced by food before you quit testing. The caveat to that is a very well-regulated cat who is always just flat.

Whether infection or sterile cystitis on tip the ER vet gave me was to give Cosequin (glucosamine/chondritin) every day. It strengthens the bladder lining for less irritation the same way it does for joints.

If it is indeed an infection the other thing we started to do for Tess is a live culture probiotic. We get one made for pets at the local health food store. Keeping the good gut bacteria healthyinhibits the bad ones. And ( i know this is yuck to think about :? ) Especially w/ the way cat clean themselves, cross contamination (from the anus to the urethra) is very possible, the harmful bacteria can travel up the urinary tract.

It's not so much a matter of Lantus "kicking in" but it's a matter of how long it takes for the insulin depot to form. It typically takes 5 - 7 days. Given that Tip is switching insulin, though, we may want to fast track the dose.

Are you around during the day to test?

I think they tested for it. I know each time there was blood in the urine, and each time she was given an antibiotic and that cleare it up. I do have Cosequin from when Frankie had a sprained ankle. But I'm concerned with how it'll effect(or is it affect?) Tips bG.

Yeah, I understand, just not using the proper terminology. I'll start doing that. Yes, currently I am. That'll change August 27th though.
