I have been working extremely long hours due to a new job and have not been able to be with Simon as much. HIs blood sugar has been kind of high lately, but I thought it was because of the stress of me not being at hoe. Tonight when I got home, I thought his mouth looked kind of funny. One of his teeth is very, very loose and the gum is red, but not extremely red. Simon is still eating, but slowly so I know it must be hurting. I called ER and they said that all they would do is give him antibiotics and a pain med -- they do not do emergency dental care (I wouldn't want them doing it anyway). Has anyone experienced this before and if so, do you think it is ok to wait until first thing in the AM to bring him to his vet? Should I withhold food and water after midnight and not give insulin in AM in case he needs dental surgery? I am very nervous about him going through any type of surgery due to his age (17).

Thank you!!

Re: 7/22 Simon PMPS 313 Loose tooth - NEED ADVICE!

Most vets wouldn't do dental surgery without doing bloodwork first to make sure the cat is healthy enough for anesthesia

A loose tooth isn't an emergency, and although it can be painful and cause numbers to rise (as well as infection), it's safe for you to wait a day or two to get him into a vet that can make sure he's healthy enough for anesthesia as well as do a proper dental.

A good dental always includes x-rays and not all vets offices have the equipment to do that.

If your vet wants to start on antibiotics and pain meds while you're waiting, that should help. Just make sure the antibiotic doesn't contain any sugars. NO covenia (it's a long acting shot .....but if your cat is sensitive to it, you can't take it back out of them...it lasts 2 weeks)

Buprenorphine (also called Buprenex and Bupe) is the best pain medication for cats. Metacam is another medication a lot want to use, but it has a black box warning against using it on cats.

Don't forget to put your tooth under your pillow Simon!

Chris, thanks for the advice. I feel better now about waiting until tomorrow morning. I'll post more after I find out what is going on. Thanks!

Georgia, if he's really hungry, you can feed him chicken baby food (just chicken and gravy). He doesn't have to even think about chewing it, and most cats love it.

Sending healing and good dental vines for your dear Simon.

Re: 7/22 Simon PMPS 313 Loose tooth - NEED ADVICE!

Sending prayers for Simon's tooth. FWIW, last year my civvie Petey broke a tooth. It was very painful for sure, but he broke the tooth on Friday the vet wasn't able to do the surgery until Monday. He was on bupe until the procedure.

Please let us know how he's doing when you have a chance!

Re: 7/22 Simon PMPS 313 Loose tooth - NEED ADVICE!

Hey, Georgia!

I'm sorry that Simon is having dental issues. I do think it's OK to wait until this morning unless you see some dramatic change.

Congrats on the new job!

Re: 7/22 Simon PMPS 313 Loose tooth - NEED ADVICE!

Simon did ok last night and even ate his snack at 11:00. He is on the way to the vet right now. I have an amazing pet sitter that came and picked him up because I cannot take him myself because of my work schedule. Hopefully, the vet will be able to take care of the tooth in the least invasive manner. Thanks for all the well wishes. Sorry I have been out of the loop for a few weeks. My new business started last week and it is taking all of my time, days and nights. It is exhausting but VERY rewarding. Plus, my mom's wedding is this Saturday and I have family coming to stay at my house. I hope Simon will not get too stressed. Funny how everything happens at once.

I'll post when I find out about things.

Re: 7/23 Simon PMPS 363 Dental tomorrow

Simon went to the vet today but couldn't get his dental done because he had to have an echocardiogram first. Simon has a heart murmur and echo revealed he has a valve issue. The specialist that did echo says he does not need meds at this point but should re-check in 6 months with another echo. He cleared him for the dental tomorrow. I am a nervous wreck! I am very scared and am praying all goes well. I picked up Simon this evening and he has started on Clavamox and also got some bupe for pain. He ate most of his food tonight and seems ok, just very tired and nervous from the vet visit. I did not give insulin this morning so BG is very high due to that and the stress of vet visit. Simon goes back to vet at 8:30 and will be there for the day. It looks like he will have at least 2 teeth taken out, possibly 3. Vet says he can have a little food first thing in the morning and to give 1/2 of the amount of his regular insulin.

Please send healing vines and prayers for Simon.

Hopefully once it's all over, it'll help bring his numbers down too!

Once he's home tomorrow, make sure you test....Anesthesia can make them go lower, and when you start to try to feed, give him only about a teaspoon and then wait for at least 30 minutes before giving another teaspoon. Anesthesia can also make them sick to their stomach, so you don't want to feed too much, too soon.

Sending lots of good dental vines your way!

(and don't forget the Tooth Fairy Simon!)

So glad you are getting this taken care of. Sending lots of healing vines and good dental vines for Simon, and hugs to his worried bean. :YMHUG:

Please keep us updated on how he does, Georgia. We'll all be praying for him!
