The weekend was messed up as far as shot times go. I had to be at a full-day convention an hour out of town for Fri/Sat/Sun and the first morning Papaya gave me a number I was reluctant to shoot without being able to monitor so I stalled until just about out the door. This meant all the shots were closer to leaving-time than I liked, but she has recently decided to eat food I leave out so I was less worried. I just don't know when she eats it - early? late? just before I get home and test? It turned into more of a 11/13 hour shooting schedule but now I'm back to normal, though I have to work the shot times back to the appropriate early hour.

Last night we had a major thunderstorm. Thunder is very loud here on the flat prairies, but this was spectacular even for here. After one long overhead burst of thunder I heard the weirdest loud buzzing, and some noise from the back lane. I ran out with camera and phone to see what was going on - a transformer exploded and there was a live wire putting on a fireworks show, and a house across the alley in smoke. So in the ensuing commotion of emergency response I didn't get a BG test until +4 last night and Papaya was down to 53.

I was worried we were going to have to evacuate since they didn't seem to be able to get the power off and there kept being big pops and flashes of light from the lane, plus the smoke from the house! I had cat food and diabetes stuff in a bag by the door ready to go - BUT my garage was blocked by firetrucks and I don't think they would have let me into it to get the cat carrier. Lesson learned: keep carrier inside, closer to the cat, so you can have it immediately if you need to leave the house immediately!

Here's a pic of the live wire . . . [img=[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/ehmeelu/9340318252/]

Wow, glad you are all OK, I keep carrier in other room with the door open they sleep in it, never a problem for vet visit either.
Power lines down could of been bad  glad things turned out ok.

I'm so glad you're all ok. Scary!

I hope Papaya comes down from her bounce today.
Enjoy your day!

Oo  that was scary. I'm glad you and your house are okay and you didn't need to evacuate.

I used to keep my carriers down in the basement, but now I keep them upstairs for just in case. And Ginger loves to sleep in them, too.

Thanks Josie, Dyana and . . . (sorry, mtncat58, I don't know your name), for stopping by!

The whole leaving the carrier around for the cat to sleep in has never worked with Papaya. She is DEEPLY suspicious of it! It usually is kept in my spare room, but I had my parents staying for the weekend so things got juggled around. Now I'll certainly make sure it stays close by!

Emergency evacuations are always on people's mind here in spring in case there's flooding, but it's a good reminder that some emergencies could happen any day (this city has a Biosafety Level 4 lab right in the middle of my residential area, um, hello Ebola!) so one always has to be ready - and having a pet that needs special care is definitely an extra consideration.

I'm sure Papaya will be back to some good numbers now that I am back to a normal routine. Have a great day!

Oh Wow Amy!!

Thanks Jane, Dara and Amy! I guess it's always good to have an almost-emergency so you know what you need to sort out before a REAL one . . . but lets hope none of us actually ever end up in one!
