Members of the Pancreatitis board also recommended Denaramin for Jinx's liver but suggested it might be better to hold off on giving that to him to see if his liver values improve from the metronidazole. That way, I would not be guessing whether it was the abx or supplement/s that caused the improvement.

Also, they said some cats do well with Marin and Denosyl separately and some do better on the combo, Denaramin. It sounds like Denaramin can cause vomiting; particularly if given on an empty stomach.

Was hoping to get everyone's thoughts on this.

Depends on who's giving the advice. I don't think I'd wait, especially if giving ondansetron. Maybe you could go with just Marin for now and discontinue it if you see its affecting him adversely. I wouldn't care if his numbers improved without knowing what was behind it. Ask them if there is any reason not to give it if you watch him for negative reactions - like nausea or inappetance?

I'd go with Karrie on this one. I gave Denamarin to Gus and Gracie and never had any issues with it causing nausea or vomiting.

Karrie & Marje - I see your point. My question is, if his liver numbers improve substantially since getting on the abx, or even go back into the normal range, would you still recommend giving him the Denaramin? If your answer is yes, then I will give it to him. My thinking was that if his livers values went up to due weight loss or something the abx fixed, why bother giving him another pill every day. I have no idea if that's sound reasoning considering his issues so please let me know what you think.

I should also mention that I talked to the internist today and she said the liver was not reported by the radiologist because it looked normal. Not sure if that will have any bearing on your opinion but the fact the liver wasn't mentioned on the u/s report was brought up last week and I said I would call to get an answer. Thanks again for all the help and advice. It's a lot to wrap my head around so most of these questions are just so I'm better educated about what I'm giving Jinx and why.

I could be way off on this but I'd be surprised if the ab does it. It could.....like I said, I could be wrong. I think Denamarin is really great .....or like Karrie said, you can give one of the others although I used Denosyl first and did not get any improvement. Denamarin...yes...I saw improvement.

I think once his numbers are normal, I'd take him off and see how he does. Interesting about the liver.......cats...such mysteries.

I like yours and Karrie's strategy better, Marje. I think the important thing is to do whatever I can to get his numbers down. So I just ordered some Denaramin and will get him started on that as soon as I get them. Then, if/when his numbers go back into the normal range, I'll take him off it to see how he does.

His liver values were quite elevated so that would be a concern to me. You aren't dealing with Feline Hepatic Lipidoses as the ALP-K isn't elevated or I didn't see this listed (usually both are high with FHL - Both ALP-K and ALT). But in the journal articles I've read on FHL a liver supplement actually improves survivability. I think Liver supplements should be considered as part and parcel with liver issues.

I will email the moderators on the Feline Assisted Feeding forum for their advice and will post back. The reason why I am asking them is that elevated liver enzymes are often present with an inappetant cat concurrent with other issues. Maverick had idiopathic (unknown cause) FHL with no other known issues.
 
Thank-you for looking into it, Karrie. He wasn't eating much at the time and had been vomiting off and on for a couple weeks so I wonder if that was a factor. Since then, his appetite has been great and no vomiting. Either way, I ordered some Denaramin and plan on giving it to him.
