Anti-jinx here too.
Come on Johnny, show us ur pretty pancreas working!
We know it is after last nite!

Re: 7/18 Johnny AMPS 146 +3(149) +4(161)

Should we keep testing? Or wait until PMPS? I'll be around today...doing laundry and getting ready for the week.

Re: 7/18 Johnny AMPS 146 +3(149) +4(161)

Fed him a small meal of chicken FF at +4.75.

At +8.75, he was 119.

Very glad to see a drop, but interested in others' interpretations. Boy, I feel like I'm a newbie all over again.

Gave him another small meal. Three hours until PMPS. Should we withhold food again? He didn't even look for the food this time until 3 hours had past. He was snoozing away...

Re: 7/18 Johnny AMPS 146 +3(149) +4(161) +8.75(119)

sorry, I'm just now seeing this. He came down a lot with that food! My inclination would be to feed another small meal and see if he can come down even further with that.

unless johnny is green at pmps time, what do you think about shooting just a drop of insulin to help him along?

johnny is reminding me of pat's raja: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tdpkQ7mlqqsmmBxow_83KGg&output=html.
we started an otj trial, but raja wasn't quite ready. after a couple of weeks, raja started another otj trial and has been off insulin ever since.

johnny is very, very close. a little more support should do the trick! :-D

I agree with Jill, it looks like Johnny could use a little more time on insulin to help his pancreas get a little stronger. Make sure you look at Raja's spreadsheet, her first trial looked very much like Johnny's, but the second time around she was a superstar. Johnny went down the last couple of doses pretty fast, and it looks like he just needs a little more support.

I also agree that he might need a little more insulin before he's ready. I want him to be totally ready and after these past couple of days, I was thinking we might be heading towards that. We'll do our best to administer one drop if he's in the green at test time or maybe 95 or higher.

I just did some test measurements into the sink to estimate 1 drop. When I dosed it up to the 0.1 we were giving, I got 1 drop to come out and another teensy tiny drop, but only after serious plunger pushing. I imagine Johnny wasn't getting that little bit, right? Makes me a tad nervous that he was already down to a drop. But I tend to worry about something in most situations, so that's probably the detail my brain picked for tonight.

Then, I thought it might be easier to gauge by dosing it up to 1.0 unit and see how many drops came out. I got three. Does that sound right? I anticipated more, but they were bigger than the drop from the 0.1. I just don't know how you decide what 1 drop is...it seems relative to what you dosed up first. Sorry to be such a worry wart. It runs in my family!

ETA: Thanks for the link to Raja's spreadsheet! I've been looking through some OTJ kitties trying to find a chart that reminded me of Johnny's. Very similar! I hope we have as great of an outcome.

I totally agree, Libby! I think when Johnny went from the fat 0.25 to the vacation dose (0.1), he started racing ahead because he saw the finish line. I still can't believe how his numbers were better on the vacation dose. Glad we went!

I have the same problem figuring out what a drop it - it depends how I hold the syringe too! I just try to be consistent with "my" .1 u - which I measure so that I just just see the tiniest bit of light about the 0 line if I tilt the syringe (straight on, it looks like it's about touching the line - just not ... quite).

I read in another condo (maybe Ann and Maggie's?) where someone said that for these tiny doses, when you depress the plunger, keep it depressed until after you pull the needle out. That way that tiny little drop will get wiped off in them and they get the benefit of that too. I've been giving Kasha her shot, holding the plunger depressed for a few seconds and keeping it firmly depressed until after I remove it. If I push down on the plunger afterward, I don't see any drop at all (unless maybe I push really hard on it!)...

Re: 7/18 Johnny AMPS 146 +3(149) +4(161) +8.75(119)

Thanks for that tip, Krys! I think I do leave it in for a second, but will be much more mindful of that and make sure Brian and I are both consistent. It makes sense!

Johnny was 139 at PMPS, so no tightrope decision about giving insulin or not. We gave either a drop or 0.1. I think we'll call it 0.1 b/c I think that's probably what it ended up being. It seems like maybe 1 drop would be more than 0.1 if we did it another way.

Thanks for all the guidance Jill and Libby. You guys are wonderful! I love that it's not a rush just to be OTJ. You earn each decrease and then the body is ready. I imagine our vet, if she had checked in with us since May (!!!), would say just to watch him. That, or bump him up to some crazy number. I can't wait to e-mail her the sheet and say he's OTJ. That will be a sweet day. Also, I'm going to give my name has a contact for the newly diagnosed and recommend they come here.

Re: 7/18 Johnny PMPS 139 - began insulin support again

Aww, thanks for the vote of confidence, Ronnie. I feel lucky that he's so close and will try my best to be patient.

Re: 7/18 Johnny PMPS 139 +3 (71)

much better. We'll try again soon, I'm sure, but this looks more comfortable for now.
