7/17 vet appointment What to do about insulin

I need to take Phoenix to the vet for blood work. His insulin shot is at 7:30 a.m. The vet usually schedules his appointments for around 4 p.m. so I can give him his shot.

But that is not possible right now. I have to schedule a morning appointment. The vet doesn't get there until 9 a.m. so that would be the earliest I could get. What should I do about his insulin injection?

The appointment is at 9am today? When do you leave and when are you back?
No, I haven't scheduled the appointment yet. The problem is with the air conditioner on my car. It runs great until you come to a stop, then it starts blowing warm air. The vet is over an hours drive from me with frequent stops. You also are still having to wait in your car until the vet is ready to see you. The temperature here is in the mid nineties. That is why I need to schedule an early appointment while it is cooler outside. It is 5 a.m. here and the vet doesn't open until 8 a.m. I need to call to schedule an appointment.

Phoenix has seemed fine until this morning. He is wheezing. It seems to stop and start. He woke me up with the wheezing at 3 a.m. it lasted for about ten minutes and then he seemed fine. The wheezing has just started back up again at 5 a.m. He can't be sedated for a chest x-ray because the last 2 times he was sedated, he had breathing problems. I want to get blood work done and have the vet listen to his chest. I am really concerned. I would really like to get a chest x-ray but I don't want take the chance. I almost lost him the last 2 times he was sedated. Except for the wheezing, he seems ok. He is not panting and is sleeping right now and apart from the wheezing, he seems fine. He will run for a treat and is eating fine.

OK. Sorry to hear about the wheezing. Go ahead and schedule the appointment and we will figure out what to about the shot closer to the date. Maybe a skip or a token dose. Or give him the dose and carb him up.

His vet has an on call vet for emergencies. I just called and luckily his vet was the one on call last night. I have a 10:30 appointment this morning. He told me to skip his morning shot and go ahead and feed him. He wants to listen to his lungs and try to get blood work. I took a video of his wheezing and he wants to watch it.

The weird thing is, one moment he is wheezing very loudly and a few minutes later, he is fine. He is walking around and not panting though when he had pneumonia over a year ago, he wouldn't pant either. I am very worried

Good luck with the vet appointment, Susan. It is very good that you are taking him in with the wheezing situation. Sorry to hear about the car problem. I'm in Florida and can relate to the heat situation. Hope you and kitty don't have to wait too long in your car before they take Phoenix in.

I’m sorry to hear Phoenix is wheezing. I hope the vet can get to the bottom of it for you.
Can you put him in the back seat of the car on the way to the vet so he doesn’t have hot air blowing on him when you stop?

Best of luck with the vet visit. The larger depot will help Phoenix recover quickly from the skip.

Thank you all for your concern. Phoenix is home from the vet. Thankfully, my air conditioner remained cool the whole time. The vet listened to Phoenix's lungs and did blood work. I also played a video for him that I had made this morning of Phoenix wheezing.

The vet said that his lungs sound clear and his blood work white count was only slightly off. He said this could be caused by stress or a low grade infection. Everything else looked good. The vet thinks it is asthma caused by an allergy. He has given Phoenix antibiotics and also gentamyacin for breathing treatments twice a day. If the breathing treatments don't help, he will give him prednisone.

It is so odd, he can start wheezing and a few minutes later he is fine. He is eating all his food and walking around. I, on the other hand, am a complete wreck. It is going to be days before I calm down. I am just thankful that Phoenix is okay. That is all I care about. I had asthma about 35 years ago. It can be very scary and I hate to see Phoenix wheezing. I just hope it goes away.

As you know, Phoenix had a severe wheezing episode today. He is okay now but I would like to ask you a question.
Sometimes when I am preparing his insulin injection, I get a few tiny bubbles form down by the plunger. No matter what I do, I can't get rid of them. Last night, I gave his injection at 7:30 p.m. His insulin usually kicks in about 8 hours later. This is about the time his wheezing started this morning at 3 a.m. Do you think these little bubbles could have caused this wheezing attack? I just don't understand what could have caused this wheezing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you

No, the bubbles didn't cause the wheezing. Most of us have seen bubbles at one time or another.

I think you're confusing onset with nadir. When insulin "kicks in" is the onset. The lowest point in the cycle is the nadir. If you were noting that the nadir is at +8, that may be more the case during the PM cycle -- Phoenix's nadirs seem to be a bit later during the PM cycle.
