Being totally honest, I did not think he'd make it through the night. I brought him to bed with me and he growled (never does that to me, only everyone else) and once in bed he just splayed out limp and wouldn't move. No purrs, just funky breathing. He seemed relaxed and comfortable so we just let him be. He was still that way each time I got up during the night.

But, in true cat fashion, he was up and by the door this morning. We'll see how he eats. I'm going to give him a little break this morning and see how he is in a few hours.

Hi Melissa - did Mr Kitty feel a little icky after the first tap? It was a nice idea to let him be, instead of poking his ear. Prayers for a turnaround. You are " the best":bighug: care taker.
Thank you, and Katherine @PerfumedCatMom too :bighug:

I'm not sure since after they did it they kept him overnight. By the time I picked him up next day he perked up (probably about 24 hours later). I was hoping he was just sore/exhausted from the vet trip, but poor guy has a lot stacked against him.

Yes, that's right - so that makes me think he could feel better in a few hours. I sure hope so:)

He got dealt some rough health challenges. But he has you for help. Just wish it wasn't so hard on you!

Poor Mr. Kitty. How did you get Mr. Kitty. Have you had him since he was a kitten?

How many days has he been on the Rutin? It sounds like it’s a real challenge getting it in him.

Do you have any idea how he got this chylothorax? In my reading there are several causes listed but none of them seem to apply to Mr. Kitty!

Hugs to you (a kiss on top of the head to Mr. Kitty)

I actually adopted him from a local shelter when he was 5. It's a funny story, Pippi was lonely because I was doing school and working, so I got him as a companion for her (apartment wouldn't allow two pets, I figured a cat was easier to hide than a dog). He was the only dog-friendly already-declawed cat in the shelters...when I went to see him, turns out he lived in the Cat Behaviorist's office because he was just an a-hole to everyone and everything else :joyful: In her first follow up email, she asked if I had been killed and eaten by him yet lol Took us probably 4 months of double oven mitts to socialize him, but he's a very sweet kitty once comfortable. He used to lay in wait on top of his cat tree and bop anyone who dared come within reach.

I started Rutin Monday, it hasn't been consistent enough yet, though I am encouraged it was only 100mL pulled. at first he ate it no problem, now he won't. I tried syringing it with food, but the homemade food won't syringe no matter what I do. Tried mixing in water and syringing, that just ended up sprayed all over the room. Husband just ran out to buy low fat low carb wet food, so will attempt syringing that next. Kitty is borderline fed up with my attempts so hopefully this works.

We have no idea how he got the chylothorax. Apparently in a lot of cases it's heart failure or cancer, but no signs of either with him, no sign of infection either. Something 50% of cases are idiopathic. The vet is leaning (hoping) pancreatitis, chylothorax is a very rare complication of pancreatitis in humans, doesn't seem to have been studied much in cats.

Funny how he would "bop" everyone that came within reach of him. Bless you for taking in an older kitty with behavior issues. He has been lucky to have you. I am going to be optimistic. By the way, good news for your Pippi. Give your pretty, black Mr. Kitty a big kiss for me, Melissa.

Oh Melissa, what a trial. I'm going to suggest what was suggested to me - any chance of mixing the Rutin with A/D food? It's not LC, I think around 10%, and likely not low fat but it's a difficult juggling act when they won't take the meds. Glad he had perked up this morning and hope you can have some cuddles. :bighug::bighug:

Yes. A/D is really high in fat since it’s supposed to be a “recovery “ diet :( but cats do usually love it and it’s so smooth for syringing.

I think you are a really special person to have adopted Mr. Kitty. That’s funny about the oven mitts. I can relate (my Maverick) so it makes me laugh. You must like a challenge. I always do —when it’s a cat challenge anyway. It sounds like Mr. Kitty really bonded with you. Does he like Pippi?

Aren’t high fat diets also not great for pancreatitis?

can you add water and grind up the homemade food any smoother in a blender/food processor? Sorry…. You probably already tried this!!

Hi Melissa, I was reading your thread from yesterday about Mr Kitty's vet visit.
My heart is breaking for you and Mr Kitty, that would have scared the crap out of me about how he was when you brought him to bed with you last night.
I'm just so upset to hear all this.
You and DH are doing everything you can for him, I wouldn't want to see him suffer either which doesn't make you feel any better I know.
I had to let Tyler's brother Perry go last Oct, kidney failure
I didn't want to but I couldn't watch him just lay there not wanting to move.
He was the only cat I ever had that really loved me lol
Tyler really isn't that affectionate, but Perry would love me to death.
I hope you can have some time to yourself when your mother in law comes back
I'm praying that the rutin will start to help in a couple of weeks

Big hugs Melissa, I wish I could just kiss Mr Kitty.♥:bighug::bighug::bighug:
I'm glad you got a good report about Pippi
Can you mix the Rutin in some baby food?
Edit I am looking at his pic you have on your SS of him, I just want to hold him and tell him everything will be alright ♥♥

That has crossed my mind. We went and got Tiki Cat which is zero carb, and ranges from 18-27% fat (have to stay below 30). So current plan is to syringe his regular LC pate if he'll take it, then A/D as a backup

It stinks because he needs to gain weight, but without carbs or fat that's a tall order. Hoping this is just temporary for a few more weeks.

He scarfed down the whole 6oz of tiki cat plus 2.5 oz of regular pate, so I'll call that a win (too scared to test BG after that lol). He's been up and about, so also a small win.

I do like a challenge  He didn't seem like a lost cause, and time/effort fixes most things.

He and Pippi have a love/hate relationship. I've kept them separated for most of this past year because he just doesn't feel well enough to deal with her antics. But they both used to sleep with us at night and just be out and about during the day.

And yes about the high fat diets and pancreatitis. His usual LC is around 45% fat.

I did grind it up/puree, but it's odd... something about the meal completer and meat fiber of the cooked poultry make all the liquid come out of it like a sponge, the rest gets stuck in syringe like a rock.

:bighug: hugs to you too. Sometimes it's hard to know when it's time, and sometimes they make the decision easy on you. I am so dumb, I completely forgot I have a whole stock of baby food :banghead: that would be the easiest solution wouldn't it? LOL

I know what you mean, I know squat about meds and what foods are good to feed or not to feed when a kitty has health problems, but I figured I'd take a shot and see if he could have baby food, you are not dumb, you just have so much on your mind, but I'm glad you remembered you have some :bighug:
