I was afraid the prednisone was going to increase his BG's. He is just on it for 5 days. I'm going to test him again later to see where he is at and then call my vet to see if he needs to be on it for another 3 weeks.

I'm using the same glucometer for him and Tidus I'm not sure if that has any affect. I think it's interesting Mikey was at 260 (30 minutes after I tested Tidus who was at 234) and Tidus was at 258 after Mikey hit the 260. Coincidence?

placed call to my vet to see if he needs to stay on prednisone for 3 more weeks. regardless, should I be giving him insulin now? ketones are negative

vet stated to start weening him off since he is not choking/coughing anymore. Said to give 1/2 tab once day for 3 days then 1/2 tab every other day for 6 and to monitor BG's while weening off. If BG's are high to give 1 unit of Insulin.

Just wondering should I give Mikey insulin now or wait until he is off the prednisone? His last day will be next wednesday 7/25.

He said as long as it was "clinically high" to start at 1u. Should I start with 1u?

Also, I heard/read that if diabetes comes on from prednisone it's harder to get OTJ?

based on the 297 I just got and that he went up from 260 this morning I guess 1u is good to start with?

also, is it bad to use the same glucometer for both Mikey and Tidus?

i got your pm asking for advice, jenn - my understanding is that cats who become diabetic from steroids have an easier time going off. speaking generally, cats who have been OTJ and become active diabetics again usually end up needing a higher break-through dose than they had before - but every cat is different and that doesn't say what mikey will need.

i would trust sienne's recommendation to start it back up. whatever you choose for a starting dose, you'll want to make sure you're monitoring, of course. the shed will take a couple of days to build, but it's possible you'll see action quickly so you'll just want to be on top of testing. as you know, you'll be adjusting the dose no matter where you begin.

doubt it would make any difference if the cats are sharing a glucometer. you'll just want to make sure you keep the ss current so that you don't have to go back to the glucometer and try to figure out which numbers belong to which cat.

I was thinking along the lines of 0.5u. Mikey's pancreas is working -- the pred is overwhelming it. We can always fast track the dose, if necessary. I tend to think it's a littler easier to work the dose up than starting high.

I don't see any reason to not use the same glucometer. The sample is on the strip so you're not contaminating anything.

ok, great. thanks. I will start Mikey at .5. That's what I was thinking too.
