Good morning. day 2 about ready to start... Grayson has left the reds and has had a nice overnight surf of at least yellows.. Computer issues again, so ltd posting on phone & Tracy's laptop. He's sleeping quietly now, although he'd be thrilled to get some food. Hopefully things are earli er today, meaning he'll be out earlier and able to get more food into his system. At this point I
m just glad to see him settled in. More later. Lu-Ann

Thanks for the update and sorry for the glitchy connections. We're following both Grayson and Leo's adventure closely. It's great you and Tracy have each other for support.

We dropped the boys off about 2 hours ago (8 am MTN), and will be back in about 45 min. Today will be their first radiation treatments. Nervous, but not as apprehensive as yesterday. We're both looking forward to seeing the actual pictures from the CT showing the tumors. They said both were large... we'll see what that equates to. Half a centimeter? More? Less? Anyways, the confidence we have in the facility and staff is really good. They really know what to do at every curve in the road. And with Grayson's highs and Leo's lows, they've had plenty of curves!

Fingers crossed for a good day for our boys!

Hey, Lu -

Great to hear from y'all! Sorry about limited internet, but we'll take whatever news we can get. :-D Praying all goes well today - wisdom for the caregivers, peace for the beans and fur-babies!!

:YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: I hope the boys are back with you by now and that they just sailed through the treatment. It is great for you and Tracy to have each other there for support. Oh, and all of us scattered across the world too.

Hi all. Chelsea, Grayson's personal assistant, just came out to say Grayson had completed his first treatment. He's in the back coming out of the anesthesia. Leo is now in for his.

We got to see the pictures of both boys' tumours when we met w/ Dr. Griffin, the radiation oncologist. They were really similar in size (although Leo wins for the biggest) ;-) , but his flops to the left, and Grayson's flops to the right a little. We're looking forward to getting through all of these uneventfully, and are VERY pleased with the staff. They've been outstanding! Even for those of us (me) with NO science background, they made it understandable; Tracy is the scientist, so I'm sure she absorbed much more of that than I did. But from the technical standpoint, seeing the way the computer can show the tumor, brain and other layers from all different angles, was like looking at CAD drawings of buildings to me. Amazing!!!

Hi and good luck with everything. So nice you have Tracy and Leo there with you too. Great news with the first radiation treatment completed. Looking forward to updates on Grayson.

Paws crossed everywhere here for good results for both of the boys at CSU. I'm glad things are a little calmer for you now too. Thanks so much for the updates. As you can guess, I'm very much interested. Hope Grayson can get some more fuds soon.

Grayson's not quite as ravished as he was yesterday - we were back to the hotel much earlier today. He was quite happy to get food, but is nursing the half can I just gave him. His +8 BG was 195 - BLUE!!! Woo Hoo!!! Not that I want to NOT feed him so I can see pretty colors, but WOW - after 6 hours at the vet school, and he's that low? WOW!!!!!!

He was also not quite as "drunk" from the anesthesia today as yesterday. The time under was much briefer, and he's not being a little jumping bean today, like he was yesterday! SO glad about that!!! Looking forward to a "normal" night tonight with him. Will stop in again later to update.

OH, wow, how wonderful you have Tracy and Leo as company. I'm not always able to get to all the board, so I was a little out of the loop, but, that is so great that you 4 can go through this together. The best of luck for Grayson, to get through all of this, and the next 2 days! (I hope I got that right, 2 more days?)

:YMHUG:

Thanks for the update, Lu.
Pretty interesting that Leo's and Grayson's tumors lean in opposite directions. They can balance each other out!

Thinking of you and sending good vibes for the continuation of the treatment,

Ella & Rusty

Hi everyone - especially those I haven't met before! I'm feeling the love you guys have for Tracy & Leo and really appreciate it!

We just got back from dinner together. The boys were both doing well enough that it felt okay to leave them briefly. Saw a little bit of Old Ft. Collins - very nice old historic buildings, nice patio dining, dog-friendly, busy street life.... really cool area! Earlier today I walked to the annual flower test garden that is part of the CSU horticultural program, ag extension, etc... really nice. Looking forward to checking out the perennials and some other sites in the next few days as well.

I have to say, after the crazy start insulin-wise yesterday, Grayson has been doing exceptionally well. I will update the SS shortly, but just a preview (I'm excited about this, if you couldn't tell...):

Tonight, as I was laying on the floor w/ Grayson, he's being more like "the old Grayson", complete with head butts and really happy behavior. I KNOW he's feeling better already. I knew he knew this trip was all about him, but I think he's finally feeling the effects of taking this journey. I'm SO excited!!! Thanks for the continued well-wishes & prayers... clearly they're working for us all!

More in the morning!

hi LuAn!

i saw your response to my post on Leo's condo and wanted to answer here. what the CSU folks told me was that the pituitary gland sits right on top of the roof of the mouth, directly on the floor of the skull. underneath the pituitary gland, between the skull and the gland, runs the optic chiasm. punkin's tumor was something 4ish, i don't remember the exact size, but good sized. when we were driving to CSU last September, we had taken our little one, anya, along too. in the bright light in the car, her eyes were shrunk to slits. his pupils were completely dilated. i realized then that they'd been that way for at least a month. i hadn't really picked up on it, other than thinking his eyes were so gigantic & beautiful. it didn't dawn on me that it was all pupil i had been seeing. but when i looked at anya's in the bright light, i realized punkin's pupils were blown open and didn't retract at all. the CSU folks said the tumor was pressing on his optic chiasm.

my understanding of the SRT is that the radiation doesn't shrink or kill the tumor. the way it works is to cause the tumor cells to not be able to reproduce. that's why it can take so long to see results. the current cells live out their lifespan, they just can't replace themselves. but we started to see punkin's pupils retract slightly within a short time, maybe a couple of weeks, after the SRT. just slightly, but they did. then i noticed that the middle of the day after he'd been sleeping on his back (ie, head was upside down) the pupils retracted even more. it comes and goes, but now, most of the time, his pupils are not blown open, they retract appropriately except at this point, they never close down to completely slits like anya's. the amount they remain open is probably 1/4" or less.

i LOVED the old town part of Ft Collins - it was just charming! if you're a beer drinker, there is a major brewery there that gave tours - i'm sorry i don't recall the name of it. i don't like beer, so DH did the tour while i went shopping elsewhere. he enjoyed it. i'm thinking tracy likes beer, so she might enjoy it.

of course we love tracy & leo! they've been here for more than a year and supported everyone along the way, including punkin & me when he had his SRT - we've heard many stories of leo and his mouse-hunting (and then eating poor mousie from his dish inside the house!), his love for his grandpa, and all of that. we love you too, LuAn, and we're getting to know grayson! once you're part of the LL family, you're always part.

So glad that you have been able to do this for grayson - i don't think you'll be sorry. even though punkin is still acro, still getting plenty of insulin, still having to be tested ad nauseum, i haven't regretted it for one minute. he's lost many of the acro symptoms, so i suppose the growth hormone has decreased even though the IGF had increased last time we checked it (281 at diagnosis june 2011, 304 in april 2012). he's big, but he's also maine coon and he's quite fluffy. his tongue is pretty much cat-sized again, his signs of mega-colon have disappeared, the stridor is gone, his pupils retract, his voice has lost some of the gravelly quality. the endless hunger has also abated. unfortunately, i don't think the arthritis that acro causes has gone away. he absolutely doesn't want to be held - except at the vet's and perhaps for 5 minutes every couple of weeks. he used to be a lap fungus, so that was a major change. overall, though, i am thrilled with the results of the SRT, even if he never goes OTJ.

gosh, i've written a book. sorry bout that! punkin's been the only one that's done the SRT from LL since we've been on, so there hasn't really been anyone else to compare notes with. susan & lanky had done it a year or so before us, but they had pretty much stopped posting by the time punkin had his done. hope i'm not making you crazy!

Great info Julie - the whole eye thing is just amazing... but makes a lot of sense. Hopefully he'll return to normal in that regard, but if he doesn't, that's okay. The other thing I noticed is that he rarely looks upward with his head. When I put his harness on, and try to slip it over, he's very reluctant. I imagine there's some amt of pressure from the tumor. Still hard to imagine a little pea-sized tumor can have such an effect on a kitty! Feel free to write books. I do the same, and always learn something from what others have to share.
