Re: 7/17 Cleo AMPS 270

Hi Kathy!
Not to worry, for now - bounces from low dips can take a few days to clear. Cleo's still learning the sugardance alongside you.
We'll watch for the next BG to help assess how this cycle will go :-)

Re: 7/17 Cleo AMPS (270); +11 (261); PMPS (268)

Thanks for the kind words, as always Jane!

Unfortunately, with work schedule, I couldn't get another BG until +11 and it was still high at that point, but who knows what happened in between?

I will at least be able to get a few BGs off the PM cycle.

Re: 7/17 Cleo AMPS (270); +11 (261); PMPS (268); +2 (135)

Big swing at the start of the evening cycle again. I really wish I could check her during the day to see if she's following the same pattern.

I'll definitely be keeping a close eye on her in the next couple hours to make sure she doesn't keep dropping.

Re: 7/17 Cleo AMPS (270); +11 (261); PMPS (268); +2 (135)

That's a good idea, Kathy :-)

Don't beat yourself up about not being able to test that much on workdays. Many have that problem - we personally are just spoiled, because I get to work from home. Weekends can be useful to get more comprehensive data and curves. People manage well, as you've seen, even when they can't test that much during the day. Watching the PM cycle a bit more closely, especially when it promises to be an interesting one, is great whenever it's possible.

You're doing so well!

Re: 7/17 Cleo PMPS (268);+2(135);+4(89) - NEED ADVICE PLEASE

Can one (or more) of you guys with more experience with this chime in please? Cleo's dropped down to 89. I realize that's a fine number for a regulated cat, but we're so new to this and it's a pretty big drop from where she was PMPS. Also, she was really growly about getting her ear prick for this one, which she has not been up til now :( Even with a treat reward for getting the ear prick done.

She seems to be acting ok, I may just be being too nervous. I think I'm going to keep a close eye on her and test again in an hour.

Should I be feeding her something to get her to come up or let her ride for the moment?

Sorry if the 911 icon is not called for... not sure if it is or not!

Re: 7/17 Cleo PMPS (268);+2(135);+4(89) - NEED ADVICE PLEASE

hi kathy!

89 is fine. she's doing ok. i'm looking at a drop from 135 to 89 in 2 hrs, that's about 46 points in 2 hrs, or 23 points an hour.

that's actually just pretty darned perfect.

but it wouldn't hurt for you to set an alarm and check her in another hour.

it's ok to use the 911 when you get scared, but i don't think it's an emergency.

Re: 7/17 Cleo PMPS (268);+2(135);+4(89) - NEED ADVICE PLEASE

oh, your question about food. you don't need to feed her anything right now.

basically, you're watching and waiting until a cat drops below 50, then you pop open a can of high carb with gravy, give a teaspoon of the gravy part, which has the carbs, and then come and post for more help.

it's nerve-wracking the first time or two, but then it gets easier. until she gets to 49 you're fine. if she hits 49, then give the gravy. the 40's are safe but we act then so they don't go into the 30's or lower.

edited to add: here's the post on how to deal with low numbers. basically you do what i said above and repeat the process every 20-30 minutes until they are staying safely in higher numbers. this gives you the "official" guidelines: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=147

Ok, thanks for the reassurance. I will definitely check her in an hour!

Re: 7/17 Cleo PMPS (268);+2(135);+4(89) - NEED ADVICE PLEASE

OK Kathy, Just relax, Cleo will be just fine--She is on lantus & you can control her bg drops with food--
Do you have low carb food, any medium carb food?--Just as long as she is eating something, no worries..
That is a very normal number for a +4--Definitely take a test at +5, but if you are worried you can always do a +4.5..With lantus, her nadir(low point) could be between + 4and +6 and then she will begin to go back up--
See how she has leveled off since the 3 U you first gave?

Re: 7/17 Cleo PMPS (268);+2(135);+4(89) - Keeping Watch

Thanks, just quick on the panic button still...

Cleo's up to 105 now, so I am happier with that number! Thanks again for the help.
