He's definately testing my patience at times!

Cops came over today as someone stole something out of my mailbox. I was trying to talk to the cop in my kitchen and Tigger made it hard to carry on a conversaion with him!
He's not starving, if anything i'm probably over feeding him with 5 cans of FF per day. Does that sound high? What do others feed 13-14 lb Tom cats?

Re: 7/16 Tigger AMPS 387 +4=338

there was a discussion thread here in LL a while back about this, I will bump up for you or link it here, about how much to feed kitty...I gotta find it first thou!

my own experience, and ECID, early in the diagnosis, went thru a lot of food, gained the weight back, then gradually came down to eating one (5.5 oz) can per day, for a 15lb kitty. We still feed that much per day, just gets spread out into mini meals and snacks, usually early in the cycle.
My non-diabetic kitty eats the same amount too.

ok found it, I gave it a bump to the top and here is the link on this discussion, hope that helps a bit

Re: 7/16 Tigger AMPS 387 +4=338

Dr. Lisa's site has a formula for the amount of calories to feed per day:

Required calories per day = [13.6 X optimal lean body weight in pounds] + 70

Given that Tigger has been having some very, very flat pink cycles, it may be wise to start increasing by 0.5u every 4 cycles. I'm also wondering whether it may make sense to get Tigger tested for high dose conditions. It may be that you haven't reached his break through dose. Randi's Max took a bit more insulin than Tigger is currently getting before he came down the dose ladder. (I linked Max's SS if you want to take a look.) On the other hand, if there is a high dose condition, you will know what you're dealing with and can be more aggressive about dosing. Basically, there is one blood draw for the two tests and the blood is sent off to the lab at Michigan state. This is a link to a post from the High Dose forum that may help to answer some basic questions. There are several cats here who were recently diagnosed and their beans may also be able to give you some information.

Hey thanks guys,
Read that thread and the issue i'm having and have posted before with a picture is I don't know what his weight should be. He's was 13lbs but you could see and feel all his ribs in his back bone. I'm thinking 15lbs might be ideal, but don't know if that is indeed his ideal weight.

Another post I found earlier had a differnet formula that put him at about 4 - 4.5 cans so 5 isn't all too much, but I don't know. I'm thinking a vet visit might be in store since I have not had him in since coming here. I'll have to look into that high dose condition when i'm there. The vet does that right?

The vet does get the blood. I would suggest that you drop a PM to Bev/Gus, Tommy/Squirrel, Linda/Guinness, Libby/Lucy -- Jazzy is her acro cat -- or Julie/Punkin (when she's back). They can walk you through the process. The lab at MSU only processes the blood one day/week so it helps to time the shipment. There's info on the MSU website as to how much blood is needed, how to ship, and exactly where to ship to so things don't sit on a loading dock for a week.
