Hey folks, been a while since I posted here. I lost my sister to cancer on the 4th and had to take a bit of a vacation from real life. Ben came down to attend her funeral and Scooter was left at home by himself for 4 days... we took him off insulin and expected the worst, but his numbers have been pretty good without insulin since we came back! We are now officially on OTJ day 7 and he rang in a bit high at 110 mid cycle today but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that was a food influenced number (I fed him about 15 minutes prior to that) and his pancreas will bring it down a bit. Woot

I'm so very sorry to hear about your sister, Ry. What a tragedy for you.

We're glad you let us know about Scooter. Usually you would want to leave him on insulin as long as possible In order to have a successful remission. And normally, you would reduce from .25u to .1u before stopping insulin.

Good luck!

Re: 7/15 - Scooter - OTJ TRIAL - Day 7

Thanks. We had shaved him down to about .15 to .2u before stopping but due to the emergency situation we couldn't find a sitter to administer insulin in time so we had to stop completely. I made a thread about it on health and a few people said he should be fine without for a few days, but his numbers have been OK since we got back. I'll start him back on a low dose if he gets close to 130-140 again.

Re: 7/15 - Scooter - OTJ TRIAL - Day 7

I'm so sorry for your loss. What a tragedy.

Here are the instructions for an OTJ trial. You'll want to still get tests at your typical pre-shot time (or close to). It is important to get a few tests in that way if the trial isn't holding, you know to either feed (like you noted) or you can intervene as soon as possible to get Scooter back on track.

  • Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas).
  • If your cat is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his pancreas is working!
  • After 2 weeks, if everything is looking good, we have a party!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give him the support he needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

:YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: Ry, we're so sorry to hear about your sister. Sometimes the kitties just let us know when it is time to stop insulin. Good luck on the OTJ trial.

I tried this today. At his "PMPS" he was at 112. I gave him a small meal and 3 hrs later he was at 83. Looks like he has some pancreas function... not sure if he'll be able to hold it down though. He's hovering mostly between 80 and 120. Is that too high to be considered OTJ?

Ry, so sorry for your loss…sending some white light and vines for you.

I don't know the answer to the question about Ry's numbers. I kind of asked that same question today, because it's our day 8 of OTJ trial today. I was wondering if the numbers are in the 90's, if that is a clue to how this trial will hold. I found OTJ posts, on this site, right next to the LL, its called "Honeymooners". It was good to see other OTJ SS to compare...

Have a great evening...morning?? (It's 2:30am here ;-) )
