I thought we were in the clear last night with no signs of vomiting around the usual time (9pm)...but came out for her AM shot and found a huge mess in the kitchen.

I guess we'll be going to the vet asap...I didn't give her any of the tuna or treats I thought may be causing the problem.

My concern is she is not keeping much food down...

SHOULD I GIVE LUCY SOME OF HER DRY IAMS FOOD THAT SHE WAS PREVIOUSLY ON EVEN THOUGH IT'S HIGH CARB SO THAT SHE MAY KEEP SOME FOOD DOWN??

Re: 7.14 Lucy AMPS=212 QUESTION Vomited again...

I don't see the link to yesterday's post, so I'll go looking for it.

Is she not keeping any food down?

brb.

This computer is so slow. I don't know if it's just my computer or FDMB. Ug!

Yesterday's Condo: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=99845

How long after eating is she vomiting and is it only in the evenings?

Do you have any baby food with meat and broth? That is easier on the tummy. I often give it to J.D. when I think his tummy hurts or just as a treat. If you don't have baby food, and think she won't keep her regular food down, then yes, you can give her a little bit of IAMS Dry.

Good luck at the vet visit today. Sending vines that the vet will give her something to stop that vomiting.

If you can get her in to the ER vet it may be better if there's no food on board. My guess is they are going to want to do Xrays. In any event, if you feed and she's not feeling well, you're going to end up with her vomiting in the carrier.

Re: 7.14 Lucy AMPS=212 QUESTION Vomited again...

Are you testing for ketones?

Guys, could this be pancreatitis?

Good luck at the vet...

Re: 7.14 Lucy AMPS=212 QUESTION Vomited again...

I'm not taking her the the ER vet...this doesn't seem to be an emergency. Like I have said she is acting totally normal and appears to have a healthy appetite.

The only time she is throwing up is late in the evening. She has done it 3 nights in a row now. No vomit during the day so that is why I don't get it. I am doing nothing different at night. The only thing I can think of that is different is that after her AM shot she eats a good amount bc she didn't get food during the night...whereas after her PM shot she doesn't maybe eat as much because she's had food in her dish all day. Could the PM shot upset her tummy?

She only vomits once. The past 2 nights it was pink/brown but what I found this AM was only brown.

Since it only happens once at night, I really don't think it's her food. Her BG levels are much lower today...not too low to worry about and I am monitoring closely but maybe the vomiting is due to her recent spike??

I will buy some baby food...I really don't want to give her the dry if possible. She keeps her food down all day long so it's not THAT bad...

I will try to get a Ketone test done today!

Thanks,
Becky

I will call the vet tomorrow...no appts today...

Re: 7.14 Lucy AMPS=212 QUESTION Vomited again...

I don't think the shot will upset her stomach.. How long after the shot does she vomit? Could it be scarf and barf?

Re: 7.14 Lucy AMPS=212 QUESTION Vomited again...

I don't think it's "scarf and barf" because it's liquid...not chunky. That indicates to me that it's been digested.

She gets food pretty much all day from 7am until 11pm. I put food in her dish before I go to bed around 11 so it lasts into the evening too...I don't know when all the food is gone. During the day, when I notice the bowls are empty, I put more food in. When I go back to work I'm probably going to be doing half a can at 7 am and half at 7pm. I may try that freeze food option so it de-thaws and they don't scarf it all up at once.

Back into the blues today...so that's good!!

Do you think it could just be an upset stomach from the spike? I don't know why it's only been once though...and only at night...in the late evening too. Seems as though if it was a serious issue, we'd see it more than once and randomly throughout the day.

I'm interested to see what her Ketones look like...still trying to capture some urine...

Re: 7.14 Lucy AMPS=212 QUESTION Vomited again...

If Lucy is eating her meal at shot time (7:00 PM) and then vomits at 9:00, it doesn't sound like it's acid tummy. If there's food available all day until 11 PM, if it were an acid stomach, I'd expect more issues in the morning when Lucy hasn't eaten for hours.

Re: 7.14 Lucy AMPS=212 QUESTION Vomited again...

Yeah, it's the strangest thing...I'm REALLLLY hoping it doesn't happen again tonight.

I'm starting to think it was just a reaction to the spike...but obviously, I have no idea...

Still haven't been able to get a Ketone test done...may have to keep her in the bathroom tomorrow until she'll pee for me!

Re: 7.14 Lucy AMPS=212 QUESTION Vomited again...

NEGETIVE for ketones...just tested her right now!

If I did take her to the vet...what kind of tests would they even want to do...I'm monitoring her BG and Ketones and they're both fine...

Considering going up to 2.5 for Lucy's AM shot and so on...It's time and I feel like she is sick of seeing so much pink and yellow.

We want to see more blues and greens...

Lucy is bouncing off the blues but you've held the current dose long enough. If she doesn't come back down tonight, I'd increase to 2.5u as long as you can continue to test.

Is there anything at all she can get into?

What do you mean "get into?" Like could she be eating something that is making her sick?? The answer to that would be no. We have nothing poisonous...there are no signs of her getting into anything either...

I had gastroenteritis (stomach flu) for the past 2 weeks...maybe there is a kitty version of that too...a small tummy virus that only creeps up at night?? I'm baffled...the first one was started by a hair ball so that one wasn't so worrisome...but the two to follow were just crazy!

I didn't mean anything poisonous. I mean baby food or something along that line that might upset her tummy. Some baby foods contain garlic and onion which is fine for the baby but not the kitty.

This might not be relevant at all, but I thought I'd add it . . . with my cat vomiting is usually linked to being constipated. She would go to use the litterbox, and from too much straining or whatever end up vomiting. How is Lucy's litterbox action?

It seems to be normal...I can tell bc her poops are huge compared to my other cat's and also, she doesn't cover them!

OK, so I read up on EPI and I don't believe she has that...she has solid and formed poops, not diarrhea...her coat is not oily...she doesn't fart...her appetite has increased but that's really the only thing that matches up...she hasn't lost weight either...Also, I think we just notice her poop smelling so badly because she doesn't cover it! It pretty much just smells like stinky poop...

Maybe I will bring it up at the next vet appt just be cautious...

Bailey has EPI and below..

Bailey had solid and formed poops, not diarrhea... his were solid for the first year with untreated EPI - they were just a lot bigger and somehow more airy/puffier. and they stunk worse than the others
His coat was never oily
He ate a lot ( 5 cans FF a day for a 7lb cat) without putting weight on - but that can also be unregulated diabetes - so when we regulated him it didnt make sense
No farting.

You can diagnose with a blood test. It probably isnt but when you said his poops were big I started to wonder.

Hmmmmmmmm...very interesting...I will look into it for sure bc out of no where her poops became HUGE...thanks!!

EPI is not that common in cats and it's cause is usually chronic pancreatitis. It is also overdiagnosed.

I am not saying at all that Bailey doesn't have EPI. I'm just saying it wouldn't be my first thought for what is going on with Lucy.

Megacolon is either preceded by severe constipation. Not always but if megacolon is present, the kitty would be straining and produce small, hard feces.

I think I'd look in another direction for Lucy's vomiting issues. I'm wondering if she could possibly have a massive hairball stuck in there somewhere? Thanks for letting me know about the baby food ;-)
