Thank you for all the input yesterday everyone. Also the links you sent over. Turns out metacam and meloxidyl are the same thing.
For the moment, I haven't given any more of that after charlie got the metacam injection at the vet yesterday. What I can say is that for sure it helped, at least for that 1 day.
After the injection, she was out from behind the couch, she ate, drank a bit, and was cleaning herself. This morning she called for us at 6 (like she did pre-dental cleaning), and she came running into our bed with the biggest cuddle and purr ever. Tears almost came to my eyes seeing her feeling good again.
Now it's 4pm, the metacam injection from yesterday is probably wearing off, and although she ate today, she's hiding behind the couch again. We're worried something is causing the pain. But what? The vet said she only cleaned the teeth and didn't pull any. She had no surgery. I don't get it.
If I think back though, a few weeks before the teeth cleaning, she was hiding behind the couch (her spot where she goes when she feels bad). At the time, we thought maybe it was just due to the heat (no air conditioning in Amsterdam). It's not nearly as hot as in some parts of the US, but it was warm, and the vet did tell us that when she got her teeth cleaned, she noticed charlie was dehydrated a bit, so they gave subcutaneous fluids (could that have been painful)?
Wed night after the dental, charlie was throwing up, as I mentioned yesterday. Wed & TH she wasn't eating or drinking (until we force fed and forced water on TH night). Fri she ate a tiny bit (enough to give her insulin). Yesterday she only ate a tiny bit, and although she seemed to be a little bit better (up walking around between hiding moments), she still was lethargic and weird. So based on the recommendations on here, I took her to the vet and they gave the metacam pain shot.
One thing I forgot to say yesterday:
- When she got her dental cleaning, they also tested her blood and they told us it looked normal. Normal kidneys, normal liver, normal protein, normal acid base balance. So unless the dexomitor that was given during the teeth cleaning caused something to go out of whack in her system, I don't know what's causing the pain.
In fact, I didn't take her to the vet because I thought something was wrong (although now looking back, her fur has looked bad lately, and she has been hiding behind the couch a bit).
It just seems that post-dental, she was much worse.
So now I'm real confused on what to do next. Any tests we give or shots or anything have to be done by putting her under. We now know that putting her under causes problems as well. So what's the least cruel thing to do? Wait and give some sort of pain killer? It all seems so confusing.
I read the links you guys posted yesterday, and it seems that there are mixed thoughts on metacam, though a LOT of negative findings with cats in particular, and definitely something that says don't give the liquid form after an injected form has been given. So today I haven't given anything.
I called our wholistic vet today and she said definitely she's probably in some sort of pain (especially since the metacam changed her behavior so positively yesterday). She said if I wait until tomorrow, she can give us something homeopathic and harmless that's also helpful against pain (tramil?). But waiting until tomorrow means maybe tomorrow night after work (when the 2 of us are here together and 1 of us can hold charlie in order for the other 1 to give the pain killer). That means maybe 24 hours of her being in pain (if she is). Seems cruel also.
She is eating today. Just still hiding behind the couch. I'm really confused on what to do next. Thoughts?
Thank you all for your input and help, as always. Your note yesterday provided a lot of support and helped us get to this point. Now I guess I need a little bit more coaching from afar, if anyone has any magic ideas.
I did read that metacam/meloxidil can be given safely if you give less (.01-.05 per kilo, depending on the 3 studies shown). So I could potentially give a bit that amount, rather than the 1 unit per kilo that the vet recommended for today (4.2 units).
Still, that statement on the link that said don't give metacam orally after injection has me worried.
My gut tells me don't give her any more of this stuff and wait until tomorrow. I think that's what I'm going to do and I will monitor her and let her be.
