Good morning everybody, here are some numbers from yesterday, Merlins first day on Lantus BID, 1U (after 2 weeks on Humulin TID 1.5U).
AMPS 329, (+3) 264, (+6) 223, (+9) 231, PMPS 272, (+3) 377 (after eating a can of food). And this morning, AMPS 232, (+3) 273, (+6) 259.
We're very happy with this gentle curve, in compare with the usp and downs on Humulin!

He's doing great. Only small problem so far, he's pigging out on his wet food! For 2 weeks he doesn't want to touch it, now he can't stop eating it!
He's used to be free fed so we let him have it yesterday and he managed to eat almost 5 cans! That's about twice as much as he should have, I think. Only saving grace, he is underweight. He used to be about 11 or 12 pound, now he's down to 9.
Should we just let him eat or maybe stop at 3 cans? What do you think?

Thanks and have a good day y'all!

While it's not necessary to set up a spreadsheet, it will help us to lend you a hand if you do post Merlin's numbers in a spreadsheet. I linked the format we use along with the instructions for how to put the spreadsheet into your signature.

Those numbers look great for a start. :-D

You want to keep testing and see where they are in a few days.

And I'd let him eat all he wants for now.

As soon as he gets the glucose under control and puts his weight back on, he should return to normal.

Thanks Dale, I thought so too. He already seems to calm down on the food a little, he's probably stuffed! :-D

Allowing a diabetic cat to eat "all s/he wants" is not necessarily a good idea. Well, it may be a good idea if you want your cat to pack on the pounds once his BG is better controlled. Unfortunately, the notion of allowing a cat to eat until satisfied has taken on the proportion of an urban myth.

You may want to take a look at this discussion on whether to feed your cat as much as he wants. Lisa Pierson, DVM responded to a question raised by a Board member.

The spreadsheet looks good.

BTW I'd keep food available during the mid-cycle until you have more numbers and see where this dose is going.

What is he eating now?

And what will you be changing to?
