Hello, all!
I just started Marek, my 14yo boy, on Lantus, yesterday. He's doing well so far - though he's already fed up with BG testing.
I have a question about scheduling, however. I received some good feedback in the welcome forum yesterday, but I wondered if anyone else may have anything to add.
I am the only person in my house, and have no family or friends to help. Not sure yet of the feasibility of hiring some help. (These were the suggestions I received so far).
My schedule is 2 or 3 12s on/off, keeping me out of the house close to 14 hours on those days. Also, it's 4 weeks days and 4 weeks nights, so right now, 5am/7pm are the most realistic shot times and next month will be 5pm/7am. I can probably shave 45 min off that overall, but we're still looking at 13+.
It's been made very clear that Lantus really needs to be as close to 12 as possible - most especially not too early.
How complicated/worthwhile is it to adjust dosing so that he's getting a variable amount? Or are there any other viable options that have been safely used? Should I request a different insulin??
There is a slim chance I could come home from work every day around 10 or 1 for 30ish min, but things get hectic some days and that's only a 98% guarantee. This option may not be worth considering.
I do plan to get a wet food autofeeder so that he'll be fed before I get home.
For clarity, I am starting him on 12s (5am/pm), and won't make any attempts at change for 3 weeks.
Any feedback is appreciated, even if it's just I'm crazy and need a better job schedule (sadly not an option. heh).
Thanks in advance!
