I'm thinking that, had I caught Pumbaa at a +5 or +6 this morning, he might have had a blue number. That's my story and I'm sticking with it. *LOL*

So far, I'm not too disappointed by the results after dropping him to 1.50U, but then I assume that his shed is still in depletion mode. If it takes 6 cycles for the shed to increase, I would think that it would take as long to decrease, too. I know there has been discussion about this, but no real factual information.

No one has responded to yesterday's numbers/post/condo, but I'd really like to hear all input. The problem is that the symptoms for too much insulin and too little insulin are too similar. I hope that Sheila (of Beau & Jeddie fame) knows that I'm not questioning her input, as I found other data that supported her comment that Pumbaa might be getting too much insulin, and I truly appreciated her taking the time to look at Pumbaa's SS and thinking outside of the box that we normally constrict ourselves to! At the same time, there is also support for the fact that he wasn't receiving enough insulin. It's very frustrating, that is for sure, when all you want is to do the best thing for your diabetic cat.

The good news is that Pumbaa is still acting fine. He was in hiding mode yesterday, which always scares me as cats are known to go into hiding when they are in pain. But he's been back in juvenile delinquent mode today (at least when he wasn't napping), and I always take that as a good sign.

And an actual blue to go with the "might have"?

Oh well give it a good 10 days before you decide to raise it. ;-)

Yep, I'm liking the "actual blue" today! :)

I'm trying to commit to a couple of weeks at this dose, if he doesn't go up to all black and red numbers. And no dose decreases if he drops below 50, either.

Pumbaa and Chip are on the same dose now, but I believe Chip is potentially twice the cat?

How much does Pumbaa weigh now? 1.5U of fresh retail Lantus is no small dose. :o

I'm guessing he's up to about 11 lbs. Just weighed him -- 11.5 lbs.

He was down to 8.6 lbs. at his lowest weight due to the diabetes and he was all skin and bones.

What does Chip weigh?

Then they almost are about the same cat, Chip was 14.4 lbs. last week at the vet.

He's lost his beer belly after so few carbs for the last 8 months.

But he really should be 16 lbs. If I could ever find some appropriate wet food he'll eat.

Chippendale's:

I know what you mean...Pumbaa lost his little jelly-belly, too!

I need to start watching him, though, because I think the 11.5 lbs. is just about ideal for him. He's a solid little guy, and tenting his skin is more difficult now that he's put some weight on. But both he and the civvie, Larry, are much more muscular now due to the lack of carbs.

Chip is a picky eater? What canned foods have you tried, as in name brands and flavors? Did Chip eat canned food pre-FD?

My boys will eat just about anything, thankfully! They used to eat Friskies canned pre-FD, but the mostly the gravy kinds. Both cats would lick up all of the gravy and save the chunks for later. *LOL* But the good news is, with the pate's, I mix in plenty of water and mush it all together to make it more gravy-like, and they love it. They both still lick up all of the liquids first, then come back and eat the solids later. Usually I get to add more water to the solids to make more of a gravy mixture for them. Then, for their teeth, I make sure they get cooked chicken to chew on. I've read that chicken gizzards are great for their teeth, too, so I should save the gizzards and cook them up for the cats, since I cook chicken for the drooler every week. (Drooler is on a diet and isn't getting much kibble, either...maybe 1/4 cup a day max.)

Chip is a big boy if he should be at 16 lbs.! My mom has a big cat...he can stand on his hind legs and look to see what is on the dining room table. I had never seen a cat that tall! At one point, he was around 25 lbs., but now he's down to about 17 and he looks skinny. Trying to get my mom to get them off the dry food, to no avail.

He was always relatively picky. No canned before that, but he loved his kibble and he will eat plenty of something he likes. He was up to 19 lbs. on all he could eat Hills MD dry when the first vet took him off NPH. And he was at 16 lbs. for quite a while after that until I removed all dry.

For my ibd kitty I think I tried almost every "grain free" canned food in Petco and PetSmart. I gave some of the diabetic appropriate ones to Chip, such as Merricks and Natures Variety but he won't touch them. We do the best we can with FF classics and he is eating 4 or 5 cans a day. But too many times he wants me to open a fresh can before he gets started.

I need to find something better, but I will do that later. For now I just need to concentrate on getting his numbers down a little more.

The other issue is for every bite he eats he has to be closed in the bathroom, so that's inconvenient. The only time he gets to free feed is when I leave him in there alone. The timed feeder with frozen portions is out of the question, unless he is left locked in a room all by himself which he doesn't like either.

So he lets me know when he is hungry and I let him in there to eat.

Nice to see Chip starting this morning with a yellow! May blues and greens appear on his SS today!

Does Chip get fed separately so that others can't get at his food? That has to be a pain for both you and Chip...for him to have to let you know when he's hungry so you can let him in the bathroom.

Whoops... I think it was the start of the bounce. He's bouncing red every other day now like clockwork so 1.5U may be too much?

Yes he has to be fed completely separately or he wouldn't get a bite of wet. He's not one to fight for it.
