Now that my brain is not so overwhelmed with diabetes, I've been researching and asking around about diabetic cats with hyperthyroidism. I think that's making him more aggressive than he should be and the Tapozole is causing his loss of appetite. No appetite for treats means I get bitten and weight loss.

My vet responded to my email and is concerned about his weight loss and suggested I bring him in for a blood test and urine test. He says he's a fan of radiation but hesitates it for Junior since Junior is so fearful, which I'm reading as aggressive. I'm not sure what he means...if the fear will impact administering the radiation or insulin or if he'll just be stressed out for 2 weeks.

And of course like clockwork, Junior doesn't want to see his vet and started scarfing his fud in record time. Weird cat.

Sending tons of positive vibes for a good vet check today. Junior's morning # is a nice one. :) Don't you know by now that cats are mindreaders? LOL

Boy, it's hard enough dealing with the FD, but to have another problem to worry about too, that has to be really tough. Champ gets aggressive only when his numbers are low, thus the nickname Chompers, but even that has pretty much gone away since he's gotten used to being in the green lagoon now. Personally, if there is a "cure" for the hyperthyroidism, I would consider it, though I'm sure the vet is thinking that Junior may be difficult to handle during the quarantine period. But if the treatment for the hyperthyroidism (radiation) helps the aggression and the weight loss, I would think it would be beneficial. I don't know....hard decision to make!!! I don't envy you at all.

Junior's AMPS is looking really good!!! Hope you both have a really great day!! :-D

Hi Bonnie,
I didn't mention this in my PM, but Hyper-T speeds up every bodily function and is undoubtedly contributing to the weight loss and to Junior's hyper behavior. Last spring Stu lost 5 lbs. between April and September (but his behavior was not hyper). The I-131 radiation treatment is a single shot, with no apparent adverse reactions. The "quarantine period" of 5 or 6 days is to protect the beans, not the cat, who only has to endure being in the facility. Most cats "turn off" in such situations and you probably don't have to worry about Junior attacking his care-giver!

Wishing you a good weekend and a clear head to come to a decision about what treatment is best for Junior. You should definitely have the T-4 and Free T-4 again to see if the Tapezol has had any effect on the Hyper T.

Just a quick note before I rush out the door for vet appt. THANK YOU ELLA!! Great info!

And Sienne, I'm switching to your vet soon. Need to figure out timing. You need to get commission from your vet.

Poor Junior, it's not easy being a diabetic cat.

Junior started hissing once we got into the examination room at the vet's office. My vet's on vacation but said I can see one of his partners for the tests if I want to get ahead start. I gave him a quick history and the reason why we were there and how my vet said we should do a blood test and urine test.

Then the partner asks, "Ok, any other tests?"

Uh, aren't you the expert?

His demeanor reminded me of Dr. Spaceman on 30 Rock. My vet will be calling with results next week but I'm pretty sure I'll be changing vets soon.

Then as usual, PMPS was a challenge. I burritoed him and straddled him and he growled and hissed and wriggled and struggled. Junior tried to escape by scooching backwards but was blocked by my feet like flippers on a pinball machine.

After a few minutes of this, he stopped and the burrito sat still. But something felt different. My left foot felt warm.

Did he just pee? OMG he just peed!

Poor Junior. It's not easy being a diabetic kitty.

Awwww....poor Junior. I hope you guys find some peace soon...you're both having such a tough time.

Poor Junior...but he's doing so well!!!

I think I told you before that we had I131 done on our Gus many, many years ago. No..he is not and ws not FD. But he breezed through it and is much happier...and healthier.
