61 just after breakfast

so I am taking it easy at 61 which frightens me - but he's been without insulin now and I didn't get to test him at ALL yesterday - he's eaten a big breakfast - and was about in the middle of it when I tested. What was even more upsetting was I could NOT get a blood sample - warm pad on his ear, careful aiming - and no blood droplet - both ears - I finally went back to the poor spot that is bruised and kind of a lump on his left ear (the one that works) and shot right under that and got it - but I hated to do that. Won't be home till dinner tonight - so I've left him some wet food (even though he ate a full can) - and hope I shouldn't be worried. Seems Mr. P is taking care of him.

That's a great number on no insulin for 3 days. How far you and Robbie have come in just two weeks!!!

without insulin and without a very rare health condition i can't even remember the name of, he won't hypo :-D

congratulations! this is awesome!

fwiw, my large maine coon mix guy runs about 61/62 all the time. he's my diabetic's brother so i test him pretty regularly just in case it's in their genes. i even got a test in on their wild mother recently and if i remember correctly, she also tested in the low 60's. i'd have to look in my logbook to be sure as i write them all down in case anything ever pops up elsewhere in the family.

That is a beautiful number to wake up to, especially without insulin! Sounds like you maybe well on your way to OTJ! =)

FWIW I have 10 civies that I do stop checks on just to make sure that they are still civies, and they all routinely run in the low to mid-60s.

That is a beautiful number! Robbie is looking good! Don't be scared of a 61.... without insulin, the risk of hypo is almost non-existent. That's a normal number.

I tested one of my civvies after eating, she read 57. It's a great idea to test a civvie with your meter (if you happen to have one handy...lol) so you can see what "normal" is for your meter. The meters do vary a little (and the kitties do too, but you can get an idea at least.)

thank you everyone I don't know when or if we'd be here without this forum so thank you again - I want anyone who reads this to know that my job has taken a serious turn - hopefully all will be well but we have new owners and I have no idea about job security this means I am focusing as much as possible on looking like the best employee around - if that means no running home to test and he's still OK that's how it's going to have to be. I am keeping up with it all as best as I can but if I don't post please know it's not cause I feel like HEY I'm doin' fine thanks and goodbye - it's just life is getting in the way. I will still test him as much as possible (although this am was pretty brutal on his ears) and will keep the chart and report here - but if I'm not around for a day or so - it's my job - and thank you all for your time and effort and support. I'm seeing the Vet today and he's getting a big earful of what goes on here and I'm happy to say he's been very receptive so far so here's hoping you all have converted or at least pushed all the way over to that side another Vet to home testing and NO DRY FOOD - :-D

Ellen, thanks for letting us know about the situation, I think what you are doing is fine...test twice a day if you can, keep the SS up to date, and post when you can to keep us informed. Those of us who are following closely can always peek at the SS to see how you're doing if we don't hear from you, so no worries. Good luck with the job!

But please do check in after day 14 of no insulin...we like to celebrate when one of "our" kitties goes OTJ!!

Thanks Laurie
Vet visit was intense - first of all I had to use our cat carrier for the first time in months (he's been going sitting on my lap) and he FREAKED OUT - he used to just tolerate it and about 3 minutes into our 8 minute drive to the vet he'd start crying a bit and by the time we were at the Vet door he was panting a bit and drooling some. Today he was screaming before I had him in the car and in total melt down at the vets - he calmed down while I stood with him at the counter and let him out of the case - but than in the exam room waiting (an emergency made the Vet 20 minutes late for our appt) for the vet he was panting so badly and gagging like he was going to throw up - they moved us into a bigger room with better AC and he was ok walking around the room checking things out. All i could think was it numbers were going to be so off considering how stressed out he was - he did calm down consderably but I was still concerned. Our Vet was totally stunned and psyched to see how Robbie looked - after a brief exam he said "he doesn't even look like he could have been diabetic" Further exam and he was commenting on his fur condition, said his eyes were clear and great - his kidney feels fine - he was just in great shape. He is up .5 of a lb but considering he lost 4 in 5 months I'm not too worried. The Vet and I went over his SS (he was very impressed in the set up and asked how to find it) and he declared Robbie tentatively Diet controlled diabetic. He wants me to keep up the same thing for 2 more weeks - test him 2x a day if possible, no insulin unless he's over 300+ and keep him off all dry food. They did a BG test and it was 100!!! I was shocked - he'd been so stressed - but maybe it was 40 before we left for the Vet - it was 62 this morning - They did a fructosimine (sp?) test and I'll have the info from that Friday - anxious to see what that says. First thing the vet said when he walked in with my SS in his hand was "do you think your monitor could be broken?" lol Robbie eventuallly calmed down ... when we got HOME. He loved everyone fussing over him - they all think he's so handsome - he loves that!

Ellen, I'm THRILLED reading your posts!!! You are doing a great job under difficult circumstances and with converting your vet, you're going to help make things better for other people with sugar kitties treated by your vet! HOME RUN all the way around.

Robbie's numbers are terrific. Keeping my fingers crossed that all continues!
