6/8 Oliver

I don't know what to think this morning. I gave Oliver the 0.5U last night as recommended and I tested his BG several times. It seemed to go up all night, but then, this morning, his AMPS dropped from 345 at +8 to AMPS of 283 and he ate twice between those readings. I will give him .5 again this morning.

Re: 6/9 Oliver AMPS - 283. +3 - 113, +5 - 69

Okay. Now I am panicking. Oliver's BG seems to be dropping quickly. I just gave him some Gravy Lover's. He's eating, but these low BG numbers scare me!

Re: 6/9 Oliver AMPS - 283. +3 - 113, +5 - 69

69 is a nice number, we worry below 50. I'd test again in a half hour but the gravy should help him go up. If not, try giving him some food, one or two tsp low carb if he is still above 50. The more time he can spend between 50 and 100, the more his pancreas can heal. The low carb can help him surf, or stay flattish in green.

I probably wouldn't panic like this if I were sure I could stop the drop. I think that is one of my fears - that he will start to drop and I will not be able to stop it. Generally, how long does it take for food - low carb or high carb - to impact his BG?

Re: 6/9 Oliver AMPS - 283. +3 - 113, +5 - 69

It only takes about 20 minutes for HC to hit the system. Keep an eye on Oliver's BG. You don't need to intervene until he tests at 50 or below.

I just had a scare. I tested Oliver and the meter read "LO." I immediately retested and it was 85. I hope that second reading is the accurate one.

Re: 6/9 Oliver AMPS - 283. +3 - 113, +5 - 69

If it were me, I'd grab a 3rd test and take the middle result. That's what I usually do if I get a number that seems out of whack. And then test again in 15-20 minutes to see if it has changed.

Re: 6/9 Oliver AMPS - 283. +3 - 113, +5 - 69, +5.5 - 85

I tested again using my Alpha Trak. I don't usually use that one. (Strips are too expensive.) But I do test the low readings to make sure I know for sure where he is. The Alpha Trak tested 132. So I am pretty comfortable with the reading. I have to go to the store (to get cat food) but I am afraid to leave him alone. Maybe I'll wait another half hour and test again.

+8 - 88.

I hope I am not faced with a "shoot low" decision tonight. I am not ready for that.

Maybe I should give him his prednisolone now instead of at 8 PM. It would be interesting to see if it causes his BG to go up.

Oliver has been surfing the green for a good part of the day - this is a great cycle for him. He might have dropped a little bit on the latest test because the high carb food wore off. If you are uncertain about what to do tonight, you can always get a +11 or +11.5 test and post here asking for help. Just change the icon on the first post to the "?" icon and put something like "Dose Advice?" on your subject line.

Re: 6/9 Oliver AMPS - 283. +3 - 113, +5 - 69, +5.5 - 85, +6

I gave Oliver his prednisolone at 4 PM (=8). His +10 reading is 138.

Oliver seems to have had a good day today. I hope it continues. I am planning to give him .5U tonight. Does that sound right? I am not as nervous about injecting under 200 tonight since last night he was 167 PMPS.

Looks good! On this forum we say that it's OK to shoot over 150 as long as you have some data to do so. .5U is right. :-D
