6/8 MAX LO FIRST +20min=145 +10min=182 STRIP OR METER ERROR?

I was awakened as usual so I tested first. It read LO. Fed 22% carb food and retesting now. Retested and it went to 145. Could the low have been a meter error?

Yes, could have been meter or strip error.
How long between tests?
(Suggest you test again just in case the second test was the error...?)

How is kitty now?

Just retested and it was 182. I guess it was a bad strip? Next time I will test twice. I guess this means there is no need for a reduction. I thought this was a good dose and I guess it still is? Thanks for responding.

I would be cautious. LO is very dangerous territory, just in case it wasn't a meter or strip error.

Can a cat go from Lo to 145 in 20 minutes and then to 182 10 minutes later without any food added? It doesn't seem possible to me.

I think it takes about 20 minutes for the food to affect the BGs. If you cat's liver was responding to the LO by producing life saving glucogen and the added 22% food helped to get him up, then I would say yes, it could go up that fast.

Just saw your other thread on LL and understand that there was 20 mins between the high carb food and the next test? (Is that correct?)
If so, then in my opinion, yes, it is possible for the BG to jump up that much in 20 minutes. In my own cat high carb wet food will start to raise his BG in 10 minutes. It could also be that there is a bit of bounce going on.

We can't know now what really happened. But I think you did the right thing to give high carb food straight away. Better safe than sorry. If I got a 'lo' I would probably give high carb and then test again. I wouldn't want to waste time.
But if I got a a surprisingly low number that wasn't 'dangerously low' then I'd test again first before giving food (that happpens to us quite a bit...).

I bet that really shook you up.

Thanks Eliz. It did really shake me up. I'm now trying to make sense out of this. I'll test in an hour and then need to decide what dose to give him. Any thoughts?

Hi Elise,

I do so understand your need to make sense of this. But it may be one of those things that will remain a mystery...

Was there anything else unusual about this cycle? Did Max eat less food? Different food? Did he throw up at all..?
Maybe his pancreas decided to produce a bit more insulin?
Did you give the shot in a different part of the body?
Also, I don't know how much insulin you're giving but if you're giving low doses then syringe marking errors can very occasionally be problematic (some of us using BD U100's have noticed that some syringes have markings that start slightly further down the barrel than is normal).

I don't use Lantus so can't help with specific dosing advice. But in the circumstances I would advise caution.
Maybe this was just a glitch. Or maybe it really is the case that Max needs less insulin.

You did well today. And I do hope you feel more settled soon.

THANKS for being there. He didn't get any less food, no vomiting, nothing to explain this. I last tested at +6 and he was at 84. That is his usual Nadir. I'm going to post to LL to get dosing advice and then lie down for a bit before his AMPS which is in 50 minutes. THANKS AGAIN.
