Good news NO DISTEMPER! But the U/S showed little bit of enlarged lymph nodes, thickened small intestines by the colon not the stomach. Vet thinks IBD or food hypersensitivity most likely, less likely to be cancer. Definitely has some kind of infection as white blood cells are low.

They want to run a GI/malabsorbtion profile blood test

The only other tests would be an endoscopy but not really necessary as it seems he has a low intestine or exploratory surgery which he is not a candidate for at this time anyway because he is still not 100%.

Wonderful news on no distemper.You must have breathed a big sigh of relief. progress to toward finding out what is wrong with that eliminated. Hoping for an accurate dx and treatment plan soon! More vine and snowflakes for Tidus and hugs for you.

Umm..... If there's an infection, the white blood cell count would be high, not low.

If the vet thinks this is IBD, did they suggest a novel protein diet? You'll want to look at foods with duck, rabbit, or venison.

And, when are you going to start insulin?

I saw some interesting game meat foods at the Evangers site. The ingredients look good, but I saw no vitamin and mineral supplements listed so they may not be a complete diet.

Hi Jenn,

That's great news about the distemper! IBD is controllable with the right diet. I would start on the all meat diet right away. The ones that Ann recommended are the best and the ones I would use.

Your title says no BG at vet. Do you mean he didn't take it? Did you discuss diabetes with the vet today? Have you tested him yourself today?

I hope Tidus starts feeling better real soon now that you know what's wrong and can work to correct it. You took on a real handful, huh? :lol:

Jenn, Did you and Venita see Jen Hendee's FB comment from yesterday? "If his WBC count is low, consider culture or PCR for Salmonella..." For those who are not familiar, Jen Hendee is the Vet from CA who fostered Sweet Spock before Carolyn and Jesse adopted him.

If Tidus were previously eating dry food, who knows if he was eating one of the Diamond Pet foods recently recalled for Salmonella...

Now I'm confused. I could swear the vet said the WBC count was low at 2600? AND there was definitely and infection.

I did not take his BG today he had to be at the vet at 7:45am and he was so hungry this morning from fasting it was too difficult to get. I will test him tonight and start back with insulin. For fear of not knowing what was going on I was afraid to give him insulin not knowing how he would react. When he first got here it seemed as though he wouldn't need it but now that the U/S is done and distemper is negative I'm comfortable giving him insulin tonight.

For the foods listed are they canned?

I went and got Stella and Chewy's chicken and he ate it right up. Is that not a good choice/flavor? My vet is against raw but I was looking on FDMB about IBD and it seems raw is the way to go. My vet is more fearful of salmonella, bacteria issues, but the rep. from Stella and Chewy that I spoke to today said their food is safe from that.

I hope Tidus gets a diagnosis and starts feeling better soon. Yeah for no distemper!

Neko's vet is also against raw but civie Theo's vet (long story, needed a second vet b/c needed an all female practice) recommended raw as a diet that would work for her and his crystals. If you get into raw, you can get some really novel proteins. One of the proteins my cats are getting now is kangaroo, and it is supposed to be good for cats with allergies or issues with common proteins. Be careful if you go to raw, that you check if they have egg added - some cats react to the egg protein. Other available novel proteins I've seen are pheasant, buffalo, wild boar, camel, elk, goat, etc., depending on the raw food manufacturer. Be aware that if you start with an expensive protein, it might be the one your cats really like! Fortunately mine like almost anything I've tried.

Take a look at Dr. Lisa's site. She has extensive info on raw and is a big supporter of a raw diet. With IBD cats, she often recommends partially cooking the food -- although that is if you're making your own.
