Gee Merlin, you continue to surprise me. I think I am going to start the consistent .8u. This may not bring him down much at first but hopefully I can circumvent a bounce.

Maybe a few days of consistent dosing is what he needs? Who knows!

AMPS 369; .8u
+4 - 309
PMPS - 329; 1u

I couldn't help myself. I couldn't bear the thought that he would continue into the 300's so I gave him 1u. Also since he is usually high in the night time, I thought a 1u would be better. If we get back in the 250 - 300 then I will start giving a consistent .8u.

Tomorrow, I start his fluids. Picked it up at the pharmacy. Boy is it hard getting these fluids. I guess all the pharmacies, Walgreen, Target, CVS, compound pharmacies, online stores like Valley Vet and Thriving Pets all cannot get subq DEHP free lacted ringor solutions. I thought I found some in a compounding pharmacy in Prescott, AZ about 90 minutes away but they couldn't guarantee what the local hospital will give them. I finally did find a pharmacy in Phoenix (Diamondbacks Pet Compounding pharmacy) who had non-DEHP free lacted ringer solution (LRS). On Tanya's website, she said that it is ok to get non-DEHP free if you can't get the other. Regardless, even though it was really easy when I first tried fluids on Merlin, I am not looking forward to it. In looking back, I was never looking forward to testing and giving insulin shots either. So I bet in time, giving fluids should become easy too...that is if Merlin will allow it.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend.

1 unit should be fine. Like you said he runs high at night.

I bet the fluids turns out simple! You got this!

For his water, you might use distilled water for drinking and softening up food so you are not adding more minerals to process through the kidneys.

Regular tap water (city or well) has minerals dissolved in it such as iron or calcium, which may add to the renal workload.

Could I have had a fur shot? I don't think I did. I really thought that it was a good shot tonight. So what is going on? It has been three days without AB/pain med so is there an infection brewing? There shouldn't be because everything looks good as far as I can see. Merlin has an appointment with the vet on Tuesday.

If it is in the 400's or high 300's tomorrow morning, I am wondering if I shouldn't go with a 1.2u?

Regarding the distilled water, interesting enough, I was just wondering about that earlier this week. I will certainly try it. We have a reverse osmosis system out in our hydroponics area so I easily start using that.

I keep thinking lower not higher, Cindi. If you are going to do fluids, that might be a good time to try a .6 and see what happens. Sometimes an inverse cycle, with the higher number midcycle, is an indication of too much insulin. Might be worth a try?

Drats - I just read your post and I already gave him 1u this morning (6/8). So you think I should start giving a consistent .6u? Now I am wondering if I should give fluids today.

I have another test that I want to do today. When he was going really low, I was giving him Evo Chicken and Turkey. Carbs (2), Protein and Phos DM (.88) is really low. After that day, I gave him Special Diet Friskies in which Carbs is higher (5) and Phos DM is higher (1). So I thought today I would go back to EVO and see what he does. He is not too fond of EVO though but when he is hungry, he will eat it.
