I don't know what my problem is lately with fur shots, I went for months and never gave one. I think one problem is when I pull back slightly on the plunger to check for blood before I inject.
And well, Henry does not have a lot of "loose" skin. He has gained back weight since he started being treated and hes a big boy.
Also, I shoot with him facing me on the table with my DH holding him steady. So I am inserting the needle back facing his front.
I hold the syringe at a 45 degree angle like I was taught and pinch up a tent and shoot either in flank or side of shoulder or belly. I've never shot in scruff as I read the insulin doesn't absorb as well there.
I also have a hard time pulling the plunger back a little to check for blood sometimes while keeping the syringe steady while inserted.

Why do you have to check for blood? That is something I never did, and tho I have occasionally heard of people doing it, I never thought it was routine . Do the rest of you check for blood? Also, it seems awkward to me to have the cat facing you, I always came from behind and at her side--- often when she was eating. Does facing you work better for you?

I read something about checking for blood but I've never done it. They didn't mention it when I was being taught at the vet but that doesn't mean anything!

When they showed us at the vet's how to shoot him, they told me to always pull back on the plunger just a little and check for blood and if there was any to throw the syringe away and fill another one. If there is blood, you may have hit a small vein or into muscle is what they said and I have read. The instruction booklet that came with the ProZinc when I first started said to pull back the plunger and check for blood too.
The reason I shoot with him facing me is although he is very good with ear pricking and shot, he really seems to dislike the shot more and DH holds him steady, otherwise I think he might try to jump down from the table and escape which I surely don't want him to do with his leg/walking/back/disc problems; I am afraid he might injure himself. When we have tried DH holding him with his rump facing me, he seems to get more agitated and less cooperative, that is the only reason I do it with him facing me, he seems calmer if he sees what I am doing.
We each can easily ear prick him for BG tests alone but don't think I can give his injection w/o someone keeping their hands on him to keep him steady and not trying to get down. I have never tried to give him insulin by myself without help holding him.

I've never pulled back on the plunger when giving insulin. I wait until Harley lays down and pinch, tent, poke, he rarely even notices it.

I do have to do that when giving the Adequan injections intramuscular and it is very awkward and I could use another body to help, so I understand why you need two people and why the fur shots.

Yeah I never did the blood check either. I figured it's hopeless to think I'll actually be able to make the shot after doing that. Gotta be quick & then outta there!

I'm relieved though, when I first looked at the #s I thought ohmygod_smile oh no what does this mean!?! Then saw fur shot, whew. No need to :? :?: :? over the SS (well, no more than usual.... )
