So we are down to about 40u of Lantus and when my partner went to stick the needle in it wouldn't go in at first. It feels rather cold. I don't know what the exact temp in my fridge is unfortunately. :( So we have a full pen also and the needle went into that one fine but it also felt rather cold. I know that a smaller amount of liquid would freeze more easily. So please advise?

And why again is it bad once it has frozen? I'll reread the insulin guide but I need to know now. She's 463 at PS time and it's 15 min past that now.

Please and thank you!!!

Fingers crossed that it wasn't frozen! It would be such a bummer to have to turf 40u.
She gets 8.5u a day plus the extra we draw to help ensure we can squirt out some to fine tune the dose... it doesn't last as long as it sounds. Lol. Plus it's from DCIN so I would be upset with myself for wasting their resources. I do want a thermometer for the refrigerator just to know for sure that the temp is good! But it drew out fine. So it was an unnecessary panic. :)

That's a relief! I keep my pens in the deli drawer, I find it keeps a good temp.

I have mine in a drawer too and then in the insulated mailer they arrived in. But I've noticed parts of my fridge do sometimes get cold enough to freeze, at least on the top shelf and towards the back, so I worried!

Thanks for responding today. :)

So on a whole different note I was judged for an example of Alice's testing frequency by non sugarcat CGs today and I am now second guessing myself that I might be testing more than necessary. Sigh. SS should be updated. Opinions from people with actual real experience would be appreciated. I don't feel that it is excessive given that I want data right now and she tolerates it fairly easily. Her numbers are also pretty wild for now and she started Lantus less than a month ago. Plus she had the DKA event right before the insulin switch. And I've noticed her bounces occurring even though she's not dipping as low as she could healthily go. She can just spend a day surfing the blues and she may bounce. So I've been manipulating her carbs a little to ease her into the lower numbers. Also had a couple of recent low PS numbers (but mixed with red and HIs too)..... It's complicated and she's really fragile right now. Anyway thoughts on testing frequency appreciated. Thanks. :)

I think the keywords were “ non sugar cat caregivers”. Until you have a sugar cat and know how to treat them, data is Mecca! Don’t listen to them. You are doing a great job.

My former vet who DX Bubba didn’t want to show me how to test. He said , “ wait till he gets regulated”. What a stupid statement! How could I get him regulated without testing and knowing where his numbers were?? And , had I not learned, he could have hypoed multiple times on me.

Data and info is the only way you will get her into better numbers. Don’t second guess yourself. You wouldn’t be here had you not wanted more information.

+2 is 166 and this is my first (barely) yellow PS. Can anyone please provide their thoughts on a good next test time? I am severely sleep-deprived since DKA a month ago and I need about 4-5 hours to get a sleep cycle. I'd like to be able but to medicate and do this right now but it won't work if I just have to get up and do a +5. Think +7 would still be safe?

Any chance of a +3.5? Maybe sleep after that. That lower +2 shows an active cycle and waiting to +7 may miss the lows.

I typically tested around 5 times a day, once I learned Neko’s patterns. A tip for you, once she has stopped dropping and started going up in a cycle, and all she has had is low carb food, call it quits on testing until preshot. Take yesterday as an example. In the AM you could have stopped testing at +7 and last night at +5.

Thank you for responding. I think I can make it another 45 min to a +3.5.... would that be enough?

Some of the recent days she was in the blue and even a little green, I inflated her numbers a bit with HC/LC food mixes in different ratios. I know she shouldn't miss her insulin with the DKA a month ago and how emaciated she is. So I'd rather give her more sugar for her cells!
Also some of the testing is done independently of me by my partner and sometimes that's an extra test randomly.

Thanks for responding. I appreciate it. :)

+5 is 79. Do I need to wait out another couple of hours now? Sigh. These lows are rather new for her.

She seems quite well though! She's catching up on some grooming.

IF I do get to sleep and my human does Alice's AM stuff to allow me to get a full cycle of sleep... what notes do I need to leave for if the number is lower than 150 at PS?

I have had no more than 4 hours sleep total the past two nights and I can't remember before that. Eventually I'll crack completely. :arghh: I need to be able to function at some point or I won't be able to find the work to pay my bills. .....

She has a fairly full belly and has had half a can of 4% friskies + a little more.

I have some 14% and I could also always mix the two for 9% carbs in a 1:1 ratio.....

+6 is 53 and I've never had her number this low.

Do I continue LC food or should I boost her with a gravy?

I have choices with carb percentages from 0 to 2, 3, 4, 14, and 20, plus syrup, and I can make a mix to make a specific carb range if needed.

Alright there hasn't been anyone showing online but me for quite awhile. I'm going to have to HC/LC mix her to get her safely through the night and take a nap. I cannot do another 24 hours without any sleep. I will not be able to keep on if I don't...

She's probably at her nadir right now, but if you need sleep some higher carb food is probably a good idea. Can you set an alarm and test again in an hour?
Can it be at +7, or do you mean an hour after feeding? I have to have 4-5 hours to get a recuperative sleep cycle. I haven't had one in days. +7 test is in 20 min and I can make that....
How long does it take for that food sugar to kick in?

ETA I know it's probably her nadir finally but cumulative 4 hours sleep in 60 or more hours is not going to work. I need more. Will she be safe until my human can test her around +9 or +10?

Also the carbs from HC food can wear off different for each cat. Depending on the next test you may need to leave some food out for her while you sleep.
She is so emaciated. I feed her very regularly through the day and night and usually leave something out, take a nap, get up and put it away (or if I know she is very hungry then I know she will finish it all anyway)... So definitely will leave some out. 20% & 4% mix?

If you need to go to sleep, I'd leave some HC food out for her. Is there any way you or your partner can check her number in an hour just to be sure she's still going up?
I have an alarm set for two hours from now for partner to check. Alice ate enough, I also doled out 15 kibble pieces over the hour. And she has more out.
Thanks for your support at these hours!
