Good Morning, Everyone,

I hear from Rusty that it was a good party last night. And after the rain, today we have brilliant sunshine. Rusty is so much better. His appetite is better, he has more energy, and his leg/foot looks good. Today at noon he goes to the vet for his FVRCP vaccine. He is also due for the Feline Leukemia vaccine, but after reading a lot about vaccines, I wonder if he needs this. Any thoughts? I remember when Feline Leukemia was feared (in the late 1970s and 1980s), but the epidemic seems to have ended. I will discuss it with the vet. We don't have populations of feral cats here.
While at the vet's, Rusty will have his foot/leg examined and will have blood drawn for the spec fPL. I want this as a follow-up, and also so that I have a baseline number for pancreatitis. The snap fPL only tells whether or not a cat is positive for pancreatitis.

All for now. I trust that all the kitties got home safely from the Full Moon party and that they all had a good time,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111 vet visit today

Morning Ella - Good vines for a successful vetty visit. I think it is a good idea to have the spec fPL done, it is always good to have baselines. Then you have a reference point. I wonder on the other vaccinations - I know my DSIL does the titre (SP??) test done, and if they are good, then he does not vaccinate, only if needed. The FVRCP they do, but not the others. Then again, their kitties are indoor only, and not exposed to other cats or the elements. Good news that Rusty's leg is all better. YAY!

Very nice amps for Rusty - surf well Rusty, and don't let the vetty visit upset you. :-D

Rusty! DUDE! Vetty???????????? KTSS will come an visit - amke sure you get rid of that vetty smell. and then.... we gits pool and beach cillaxin' to do. See you! ~~ Mannie

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111 vet visit today

I dont take my cats for vaccine other than the 3 shots they have when kitten stage. They are strict indoor cats & I never bring in anymore additional so I guess they are safe. Yes, I have also heard a lot of stories about the vaccine, so no comment from me.
Glad that Rusty is doing better today. Good luck with the vet visit!

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111 vet visit today

Good luck with the vetty visit today! Nice AMPS Rusty! Keep it around there buddy. Have a great day Ella!

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111 vet visit today

Hi Ella, good luck with Rusty at the Vetty and your decision on shots. I've never had the fPL Spec test done on Maggie. Is that something that's done when there are symptoms.
Rusty, don't be scared. Mannie and kitties on KTSS will be by with some tlc 4 u!

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111 vet visit today

Ella, thanks so much for explaining about the tests for pancreatitis in my condo. I do remember the time Rusty's numbers were high and taking him to Vetty. .

Yes, my batch #s are different being I ordered online. I do remember the large cans I bought at Petsmart were the ones Mags liked. The PetPeople and also Petco store had a mushy texture. I think I know where not to buy them. Petsmart and wag.com are okay.

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111 vet visit today

HI Ella. Checks said that Rusty was a hoot at the party last night. From the dancing stories, I'm guessing that his leg/foot feels just fine now. dancing_cat
Looking later for update on the good vetty visit. :-D

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111 vet visit today

Hi guys .. I didn't know rusty was having any problems with his feet or legs .. but I am glad to hear things are looking good today .. good luck at the vet's .. mocha is due for her rabies shot, and I don't think our vet carries the purevax vaccine that is recommended and I'm torn about what to do .. oh well I am sure it will all work out .. have a great day guys!

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111 vet visit today

I really don't think that the store where you buy the Wellness would make a difference all of the time. Those stores just happened to have different batches in stock at present. I suggest that you make a note of the dates and other info. on the bottom of the cans so that when you go shopping at a store (where you can actually see the cans), you will know which ones might be mushy.

Good point, as I was thinking the store, and next time I will check dates and batch #'s! Thanks much, Ella!

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111 vet visit today

Sounds like a beautiful day there today. I hope the vetty visit doesn't upset Rusty's numbers too much, he's off to a good start today. And I'm glad his foot is feeling so much better.

Rusty, we's loading all the spa stuff for you the get the vetty smell off! We'll be waiting when you get home! -- Tess

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111 vet visit today

Rusty, you handsome dude... maybe all the dancing at the full moon party was good for your leg.
Best of luck at the vetty bean today.

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111 vet visit today

Good Morning Ella & Rusty!

We're really happy to hear your leg is feeling better and your doing better all around. Hope the vet visit isn't' too terrible, don't let it upset your nice number this morning!

Hope you all have a great day!

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111 vet visit today

My take on vaccines is this: The reason all these diseases were totally or partly eradicated is due to vaccines. Unless my pet (or child or self) has a health issue that makes the vaccine unsafe (and my daughter could not have pertussis due to an allergic reaction) we get the shots because otherwise, I am relying on other people vaccinating their pets to keep mine safe and that seems unfair to ask. Now if there is a medical reason, it's a different story.

Hope you get a good vet report!

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111 vet visit today

Sending good vetty vines to Rusty!!!! Since Champ is strictly an indoor cat, he doesn't receive any vaccines at all. I know I've heard of some vaccines causing cancer at the injection sites (or something like that). I look forward to coming back to this condo to see what other people say. Always good to have info!!!

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111, +6 67 back from vet

Hi again,
We're back from the vet. Rusty had only the FVRCP 3-year, non-adjuvented vaccine. Since he was no longer showing any symptoms of pancreatitis, the vet and we agreed that to do the spec fPL would not produce any meaningful numerical data. If/when he has a pancreatitis flare, we will do the spec fPL (blood sample sent to IDEXX labs) and get the numerical value.
His leg/foot is not a problem. She felt a small swelling on his knee (soft tissue injury from the encounter with the squirrel). He is walking normally and not sticking out his leg when he sits.
His weight on her scales was 17 lbs.
He does have some gingivitis and inflammation around some of his 6 remaining teeth, however, so we scheduled a dental for 28 June, rather than waiting until September (which would be a year from the last one). I thought it was better to get it done now, since it can only get worse!

His +6, an "in-the-door" test, was 67. I put out some FF T&G, but he only ate a little so far. He's a bit tired from his experience! He's asleep on his little bed by the radiator. Fingers and paws crossed that he won't have an adverse reaction to the vaccine. But I think we did the right thing to have him vaccinated. He might catch another squirrel!

Going for a ride on my bike now (I'm leading a bike ride on Thursday and have to get in more riding myself!).

Ella

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111, +6 67 back from vet

Great vetty report. Curious, why no rabies? Did they do a titer? That is what i would worry about most w/ squirrels.

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111, +6 67 back from vet

Great vetty report! Maybe Rusty needs a personal trainer to prepare for squirrel hunting without injury!

We had the spec fPL test run back in January, when Zener was vomiting, not eating and we were assist feeding. It took a couple of days to get the results and all was normal. After using a combo of cerenia, reglan and ondansetron, he was back eating in a week. Also, we had the snap fPL test run at least twice before when he had poor appy and tummy symptoms that acted like pancreatitis and those were negative too. The spec fPL test was more expensive so good advice from the vet to wait until you might need it.

Hope Rusty has a lovely afternoon nap and is back at the hunt later. ;-)

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111, +6 67 back from vet

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111, +6 67 back from vet

HAPPY THAT RUSTY HAD A GOOD VETTY VISIT!! My cats were always indoor after we brought them in from outside where we found them, so we dont give them any vaccines...But I am glad you did give it to Rusty, as he is outside & interacts with other forest beings    --ie: squirrels & deer & birdies ;-)
Hope he has a good nap and I heard he was dancing & singing & eating up a storm!!

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111, +6 67 back from vet

Hi Ella!

Glad that Rusty had a good vet visit. Nice +6 too! Rusty what are you doing trying to challenge a squirrel. Be glad it wasn't a turkey. My cat Sammy was ready to dive into a bunch of them once. Luckily he changed his mind. Hope you are doing fine. Good luck on the bike ride this thursday. :-D

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111, +6 67 back from vet

Yay on the good vet visit, Ella.:-D What a nice 'in the door' , bg number too. Guess the trip doesn't stress Rusty, huh?

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111, +6 67 back from vet

Good news on the vetty visit:) I'm glad to hear Rusty's foot is feeling better and that he wasn't stressed out at the vet

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111, +6 67, +9.5 62, PMPS 85

Hi again,
I forgot to report that Rusty didn't get carsick!! (Ann, he didn't need a rabies shot because he had the 3-year one in Feb. 2011; our old vet gave it. I didn't know then what I know now about vaccines. I would have insisted on the 1-year Pure Vax rabies vaccine. Apparently the 3-year rabies shot is adjuvanted. But, what's done is done. :YMSIGH: )

Rusty and Edward had a nice time in the garden while I was out on my bike (very windy). All seems well this evening.

Thanks for visiting us today. I'm off now to see what's happening on the board.

Ella & Rusty

Re: 6/5 Rusty AMPS 111, +6 67, +9.5 62, PMPS 85

Thanks for the vet update, Ella. I am glad that his leg is doing better. Do you think Rusty would allow you to brush his teeth after his dental? I started (trying) to do it with Pinky after he needed two dentals in under a year. I just wrap gauze around my finger and run it over the teeth. Sometimes I use salmon flavoured toothpaste (don't know if it is FD safe). Pinky gets fully wrapped in a bath towel burrito for the procedure, but he still puts up a good fight. I am hoping that it will help stretch out the time between dentals.

I think Rusty's day has caught up with him! He slept all evening and didn't eat much of his dinner or his bedtime snack.

ni ni everyone

Ella & Rusty

ps. to Linda: I don't think Rusty would like me to try to brush his teeth, but I may try. Just not now!
