Hello my LL family!

I've missed you all during my busy weekend.

I've just come out to my parents place to pick up Leo and let me tell you, he has had a rotten rotten 3 days  . Of course because he's been so high his neuropathy is the worst its been thus far. Ughhhhhh, i am so pissed off and frustrated and angry (why i'm angry i don't know). He has spent most of his time on the pink floor. I will be increasing him .5 units tonight....enough is enough. I only have 5 days of holidays left until i go back to work and i thought i would have been closer to achieving regulation with him, not getting worse.

Plus to make matters worse, the solostar pen is full of bubbles. I'm assuming that this isn't normal and i thought i made it clear to my parents not to push insulin and air back into the pen.

Sorry to be a debby downer about this all, but i'm very upset.

Re: 6/5 Leo AMPS 371, +3 315, +5 275

Totally understandable, Tracy. Maybe you need to let the pen settle :? If that doesn't help, you need to get a new pen. As you know, the Lantus has to be totally clear.
As for the neuropathy, boy oh boy I can sympathize with you. My Alex has never gotten completely better and he has been diabetic for almost two years. But his legs are a LOT better than they were and he gets around just fine now. He now kind of divides his time between his hocks and his toes depending on how fast he wants to get someplace.
Are you giving Leo Xobaline or any form of Methyl B-12? If not, you should start. It really does help the neuropathy. If so, maybe you should give it twice a day for a while. I was giving 3 mgs AM and PM for a while until I saw an improvement.
Hang in there...it will get better!

ETA: I see that you gave Methyl B-12 in April. Is that the only time? Or is that just the only time you wrote it down? For it to work you need to give it consistently and 2 mgs as really a very low dose if Leo's neuropathy is as bad as you say.

Re: 6/5 Leo AMPS 371, +3 315, +5 275

Oh Tracy, I am soooo sorry. Two steps forward, three steps back huh? Hang in there!!! Vent away. That's is what we are here for. ((((((HUGS)))))))

Re: 6/5 Leo AMPS 371, +3 315, +5 275

Hi CaryL and Melissa,

Thanks for listening to me be a crybaby, Leo and I are back home now and I got some hugs and purrs so I'm feeling better. He seems to know when I'm down, and I always get extra hugs from him when I am down.

Caryl, yes I do give Leo 4 mg of methyl B12 everyday, I just haven't marked it on my SS. I think I'll up it to 6 mg like you said. So far I haven't noticed the methyl B12 doing anything, it hasn't made it better at all.

Re: 6/5 Leo AMPS 371, PMPS 153

LOL  well i guess being a crybaby works wonders! I was in such a pissy mood when i saw Leo's numbers for the weekend. And now he gives me a 153 for his PMPS?!?! I had the syringe all ready to go with the .5 increase i was going to give him tonight, i obviously didn't give him the .5 increase, i ended up giving him a .25 increase instead, so now we're at 3.00 units. Crossing fingers and paws that this is his dose.

Leo has been purring since we got home 2 hours ago. I think my kitty missed me, i know i missed him.

Re: 6/5 Leo AMPS 371, PMPS 153

Leo must have missed you! He was saving the good numbers for you! Enjoy your time with your boy Tracy!

Re: 6/5 Leo AMPS 371, PMPS 153

Oh Tracy, I think your baby just missed you!!! You come back and his numbers get better!!! I hope his neuropathy improves. That must be awful to have to watch!

Thanks for the prayers for my mommy!!! I appreciate it! :-D

Good luck with the dosecrease!

Re: 6/5 Leo AMPS 371, PMPS 153

It's definitely possible that Leo was stressed about you not being around (as much as he loves his GrandBeans), and maybe that's why his numbers were so high this weekend. Either that, or he's just such a good boy who knows how to make you :-D !

Keep it up, Leo - make your MamaBean happy!

Re: 6/5 Leo AMPS 371, PMPS 153, +2 68

Well Amy & Trixie, it looks like i might be having a PJ party tonight too. Leo never drops at +2, usually he's higher than his pre-shot at +2.

I might be in for a long night.

Better make some coffee ~O)

PS i'm soooo excited!!!!!

Re: 6/5 Leo PMPS 153, +2 68 Might need some help!!

That is quite a drop there! Boy, is he happy to be home - and wants to be sure he gets maximum time with you!

Go Leo!

Re: 6/5 Leo PMPS 153, +2 68 Might need some help!!

I'd get a +2.5 (and certainly a +3).

FYI: Leo's nadirs have been below 300. With nadirs that are less than 300, you increase 0.25u. Even if Leo's pre-shot tonight was pink, you would still have increased only 0.25u.

Re: 6/5 Leo PMPS 153, +2 68 Might need some help!!

how about feeding a little bit now. Let's see if that will get him surfing.

I think you increased as his bounce was clearing, so you need to slow him down before he drops too far.

Re: 6/5 Leo PMPS 153, +2 68 Might need some help!!

what should i feed him?

I have every percentage known to mankind

Re: 6/5 Leo PMPS 153, +2 68, +2.5 58 Might need some help!!

Ok, just fed him a spoonful of 9% and re-tested, he's at 58. He's hungry now but i won't feed him again til the next test, if i have to.

Re: 6/5 Leo PMPS 153, +2 68, +2.5 58 Might need some help!!

Tracy: you can feed him more LC after a test as long as you wait at least 20 minutes before testing again to see if that takes effect and bumps him up. Glad to see others are also around. What a day!!!! Good work!

Re: 6/5 Leo PMPS 153, +2 68, +2.5 58 Might need some help!!

Awesome, thanks Marje.

Now do i test him every 15 minutes?

Edit: crap his +3 is 10 minutes away, i'll just wait until then

Re: 6/5 Leo PMPS 153, +2 68, +2.5 58, +3 76

I'm so excited for you, Tracy!!! Nothing like green numbers, huh?! They are addicting, though!!

Re: 6/5 Leo PMPS 153, +2 68, +2.5 58, +3 76, +3.25 67

Yeah i'm pretty pumped!! I was all disappointed when he went up almost 20 points for his +3, but i just tested him again and he's coming back down!

Re: 6/5 Leo PMPS 153, +2 68, +2.5 58, +3 76, +3.25 67

hey tracy - so glad your day got better as it went along. wonder if he got into any contraband at grandma & grandpa's house! a little crumbs of something that was dropped on the floor or anything . . .

here's the link on how to get rid of bubbles in the solostar pen: http://www.lantus.com/solostar-insulin-pen/how-to/step-by-step.aspx

i got one of the pen tips from the pharmacist to be able to expel the air. see if that doesn't help you. your folks may not have done anything wrong - the last pen i had was full of bubbles and i know i didn't inject air into it. it was just wonky all on its little own!

Re: 6/5 Leo +2.5 58, +3 76, +3.25 67, 3.5 61

Leo probably went up because of the 9% food. Right now, the goal is to make sure Leo is in safe numbers. The secondary goal is for you to get comfortable with steering the curve. I think you are fine to test every 30 min. I would go to every 15 - 20 min. if Leo drops below 50. However, for the purposes of gathering data and seeing how Leo responds, you can certainly test every 15 min. (It's probably good for your level of confidence to test more often.)

Re: 6/5 Leo +2.5 58, +3 76, +3.25 67, 3.5 61

Well Julie, when i got out there today there was dry & wet food mixed together sitting onto the counter. I asked my mom WTH? She said that the other cats, Toban and Kathy really missed it and she fed them a little bit, i asked if Leo had gotten his face in there and she said no, that she stood there and made sure he was outside. The funny thing is, the other kitties, Toban and Kathy both puked it up after they ate (they have always been pukers after eating dry, and haven't since they all switched to wet). All i said was, you know its bad for them to eat it, yet you fed it to them and they barfed it up, what does that tell you?

When i saw the bubbles i asked if they were injecting insulin back into the pen, and they both said NO. After my dad went down for a nap, my mom whispered to me that she saw my dad inject the insulin and bubbles back into the pen. She said that his fingers are too fat to expel the bubbles from the syringe without shooting ALL the insulin back out. She promised that from now on she would do all the insulin and syringes.

I did end up opening another pen, just because i didn't know i could take the bubbles out of the pen. Thanks for the link!

Re: 6/5 Leo +2.5 58, +3 76, +3.25 67, 3.5 61

Sienne,

If he drops below 50 is that when i break out the HC food? Or just go ahead and feed him some more 9%?

Re: 6/5 Leo +2.5 58, +3 76, +3.25 67, 3.5 61

I don't have a good answer to your question other than, "It depends." Some cats, like Jill's Alex, will get a 30 point bump in numbers from a piece of boiled chicken. Other cats would need HC food for that kind of bump. I'll be honest, I don't have all the different %-carb food in the pantry. I have LC and I have some 17% HC. Because Gabby can get an upset tummy from gravy, I add Karo to LC when her numbers are low. I keep it simple.

Re: 6/5 Leo +2.5 58, +3 76, +3.25 67, 3.5 61

Well i guess this is the best time to find out what brings him higher and what doesn't. I just fed him a tablespoon of seafood feast 3%, i'll find out how much that brings him up.

Re: 6/5 Leo +2.5 58, +3 76, +3.25 67, 3.5 61

Feeding LC may just keep him surfing. That's a good thing right now. The more time in these numbers, the better for Leo's pancreas.

FYI: In the future, a teaspoon for food is more in line with what you need to be feeding (unless this is a designated meal time). When you're trying to bring numbers up, you want to feed small amounts. Otherwise, if your cat gets too full, he won't eat or he'll barf. Neither is what you want when numbers are low.

Re: 6/5 Leo +2.5 58, +3 76, +3.25 67, 3.5 61

It's always chow time for Leo, except for 3 hours before shot time. He doesn't eat too much, he nibbles all day. I fed him at supper time, he ate about 1.5 oz and I took it away until i fed him the tablespoon of 9% and the tablespoon of 3% just 20 minutes ago.

Re: 6/5 Leo +2.5 58, +3 76,3.25 67,3.5 61, +3.75 67, +4.25

I think so too!

So tomorrow, should I drop him back down to 2.75 or should I continue with the 3.00? Tonight was the first time shooting a 3.00.

Re: 6/5 Leo +2.5 58, +3 76,3.25 67,3.5 61, +3.75 67, +4.25

Tracy, I would stick with the 3.0u dose unless he earns a decrease by going below 50, as long as you can monitor as you usually do. Very nice surf going on here! :-D
