Hi all,

Well, the switch to wet food is going well so far. Bogey's numbers have stayed in the 300's during last night and today.

Got a message from the vet that Bogey's acromegaly test came back positive today. In fact his number was OFF the chart being in the 500+ range. Haven't spoken to the vet yet, so not sure what that means except for the little I've read. :(

Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Bogey's very sad mommy,
Amy

i hope the experts can chime in here shortly....

if you are switching to wet from dry...if i were you i would give that some time to kick in with that insulin and see if Bogey's numbers start coming down...

hope others can guide you better

Sorry about the results on the acro test, Amy. The bottom line, though, is that Bogey really doesn't care and he's the same lovable cat he was yesterday. Functionally, the acro diagnosis means that you will approach dosing a little differently. Knowing that Bogey has a high dose condition means that you can be more aggressive about dosing. Because a cat with acromegaly has a functioning pancreas, you will need to know how Bogey responds to carbs. And, you will need to lay in a good stock of HC foods. Many people with cats who have high dose conditions also use Humulin R as a bolus or supplemental insulin along with Lantus. I'll leave that discussion to others who are experienced in the use of R.

There are a couple of other people here who have cats that were recently diagnosed with acro. Hopefully, Squirrel, Bev, and Julie will stop by. Libby is one of the more experienced people here and she has a cat with acromegaly, as well.

There is information in the High Dose forum about acro. I don't know how busy the traffic is there.

This is info on the basics of acro and on acro and other high dose conditions from that Board.

Thanks Sienne. I just copied and was going to paste the same link.

Bogey will be fine, you will just be dosing him a little more agressively than before. The rules or guidelines will be a little different, than you are used to. You know how much cats like to be different  . And now you have two sections of the FDMB that you can post to.

This big ole huge hug

is for you.

Hi Amy, I'm sorry to hear your news, but you will have a great support group here. Squirrel/Lauren (Tommy), Julie (Punkin), and Bev (Gus) all got acro dxs within the past 2 weeks. As Libby said the other day, you will all be able to help and support each other as you begin this new adventure. All the rest of us will be around for you to lean on, too, even though we might not know very much about acro (but we are all learning quite a lot recently). The acro/high-dose forum is also a great resource.

We wish only the best for Bogey and want to help you any way we can.

Ella & Rusty

sorry about the new diagnosis. I'm really glad you ordered the test so proactively, because now it will be easier to chart a course for the next part of your journey. Now you know the reason for the high dose. You can feel relieved to know that you did nothing wrong that makes him need that much insulin. Your job is to give him the amount of insulin he needs, even if that turns out to be an amount that makes some people nervous. You're not alone! My foster kitty, Jazzy, has acromegaly. You can see her spreadsheet in my signature. There are others here too, and several who have been diagnosed very recently. It is a lot of information to digest, but please know that Bogey is the same cat he has been all along. He doesn't give a hoot about what his insulin dose is or what you call his condition, he is just your Bogey.

Sienne gave you some good links to read. I will also add this one: http://www.catacromegaly.com/ There is quite a bit of good information there. There is also a message board, though I don't think it is active.

The acromegaly diagnosis does give you license to be more aggressive with dosing. Since you just removed the wet food today, though, I would suggest waiting a couple more days to see what kind of effect that has on his numbers. It looks like he surfed in pink today instead of red, so that is progress. Once the food change has settled in a little, then we can get down to the business of finding a Lantus dose that will help him. If you read through our dosing protocols, we have a systematic way of increasing (and decreasing) doses so the cat stays safe and we know we will find a safe and effective dose for your cat.

You're in the right place, and we'll help you learn.

Thank you all... this is a bit overwhelming. He's such an amazing boy. I've had many cats over the years, but none so special as Bogey. He is truly my kitty soulmate. I've said that since day one. Thank you so, so much for the support.

Amy

we got the news yesterday - it is a lot to take in. i've had other cats too, but punkin is extra special. we love our kitters.

we'll all get through it together, amy. that makes 4 diagnoses in the past week or so. wow.

i've been reading yesterday and today, tons of materials. it sounds like we give them what they need and they likely live a normal lifespan. that's what i'm banking on!

I'm just peeking in and saw your subject so I thought I'd come on and tell you that this is actually good news. No I'm not crazy, ok maybe just a wee bit.

Seriously, I haven't read your SS, but by getting this diagnosis you now know that whatever the dose is you are at, it's not crazy or off the wall. Not for an acro cat.

You will get lots of help from the folks here who have acros and know what to do with acros. From me, I'll pop in on occasion and be a cheerleader!

So, deep breath for you. You've got a lot to learn and take in, but remember you can do this and soon you will become an acro expert!

((( Amy ))) Just saw your news. It's good you found out early why there's such resistance, so you're already ahead of the game.
