Good Morning, Everyone,

Rusty woke us up at 5 A.M. wanting to know where the remains of his bedtime snack were! (We picked up his dish at midnight, as instructed because of his dental. It is good to know what time he eats the saved portion of his nighttime food, because often I think that his AMPS is influenced by his eating; today's bg reading bears that out). Then he couldn't believe that he wasn't getting breakfast!! Poor kitty. I felt so bad for him. And then we drove to the vet, but he didn't get carsick!! So we will be able to pick him up at 4:30 p.m. (that will be +10), and he will enjoy a series of small portions so as not to overwhelm his system. In the meantime, I will vacuum, etc. While in Lake Placid we took a nice 3-mile walk around Mirror Lake and watched what I think were Olympic kayak trials.

bbl, Thanks for all your good wishes for Rusty's dental. He has only 6 teeth, so I hope he won't lose any more!

Thanks also to everyone who looked at my sketch of the Monoject syringe and commented on it. If you missed this sketch, it is now a Google Doc:

Re: 6/28 Rusty AMBG 98 dental day

wow, nice number this morning!!! especially on a dental day! hope he doesn't get too stressed and all is well with his 'toofy-pegs'.

Re: 6/28 Rusty AMBG 98 dental day

Hi Ella, sending good dental and Vetty vines for Rusty today. That is the hardest part when thry ask for food and we can't give it to them. My Vet has the same plan in withholding food after midnight. All the kitties will want to visit Rusty later and remove the Vetty smell and bring some comfort foods. Sounds like a neat walk around Lake Placid. I may take a trip to TJ's and see if I can find parking near the boardwalk to take a walk. Have a nice day.

Re: 6/28 Rusty AMBG 98 dental day

Paws crossed for a good dental and fast recovery. Poor Rusty, no food, that is a drag. We've been watching Olympic trials in swimming, athletics and rowing. :-D

Re: 6/28 Rusty AMBG 98 dental day

Nice AMBG! Sending good dental vines for Rusty. I'm sure all will be well.

All the kitts are planning a porch invasion to be there to get the vetty smell off when he gets home. They are bringing lots of snacks for him too I'll bet!

Olympic trials there? How fun to watch.

Re: 6/28 Rusty AMBG 98 dental day

Good Dental vines & prayers sent to our lovey Boy Rusty!! Hope it goes easily & Quickly!!
Please post when you know he's OK--Hugs & Love From us!!!

Re: 6/28 Rusty AMBG 98 dental day

Thanks, everyone. Your good dental vines must have worked, because when we got back from the post office there was a message on the phone that Rusty's dental went fine and that we can pick him up at 4 P.M. I sure will be happy to see him.

After 3 days of cold and rain, today is a beautiful day. Rusty will enjoy being outside for a little while and then chillaxin' on the porches with his pals.

bbl,

Ella

Re: 6/28 Rusty AMBG 98 dental day

Woo-hoo! Glad to hear the dental visit went well and no extractions! Hershey has never had any dental anything done and now I'm wondering why it was never mentioned. Guess I should put that on the list to ask about next month. He's had the same vet the whole 10 years, so hopefully she's been keeping a check on that.

Sounds like a beautiful place to be taking a walk. Way too hot here to be spending much time outside - really makes me appreciate the couple of trees around the house!

I KNOW Rusty will be thrilled to see you!!! Hershey wants to help remove that vet smell, too!!

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

Re: 6/28 Rusty AMBG 98 dental day

Woo Hoo on no more extractions - Rusty needs those remaining toothies for chasing all those squirrels. It's good you can pick him up a little early and you are going to have fun limiting the amount of food he can eat!

Olympic trials would be neat to watch. A fun way to have a walk.

Re: 6/28 Rusty AMBG 98 dental day

Yay for Rusty! :-D :-D Your beans are sure glad to have that over with. I know you're hungry but just a little bit at a time.

Re: 6/28 Rusty AMBG 98, +10 265, PMPS 256; 1 extraction

Hi All,
They said it all went well today, but the phone message didn't say that Rusty had to have 1 extraction (a molar). He did well, apparently, but he won't take his antibiotic: Orbax liquid. It is impossible! I'm supposed to give 1.5cc once a day for 14 days, starting this evening. Rusty was a wildcat and I didn't get much of it in him! What to do? Any suggestions? Can I put it into his food? It's supposed to have a malt-like taste, not medicine-like.

I didn't think he would want to eat when we got home, but he was hungry and he ate several small, watered-down portions. I gave a BCS dose (1 unit instead of 1.5 Units), just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for your suggestions about the antibiotic.

Ella & Rusty

Have you ever made a kitty burrito? A towel makes a good tortilla. Good luck. That's good he's eating a little and keeping it down.

Why cant Rusty have Clavamox? Moonie & Copper both did & they were fine...Maybe others will have some other suggestions...Good that you gave a BCS dose as SOME kitties BGs drop after anesthesia, so you did the safe thing for your cat....BTW Clavamox is in syringe in the mouth, or maybe they can give pills--Will Rusty eat pill pockets? Glad it was only one toothie & he is doing fine--Hugs & Love from us!!

Re: 6/28 Rusty AMBG 98, +10 265, PMPS 256; 1 extraction

The trick I learned at the shelter was to have everything ready, including a second syringe of plain water (especially if the meds aren't tasty). Then walk up to him (hiding the goods in one hand), do some patting and scritching, do a quick grab of the scruff, tilt the head back and squirt it in. You get fast enough that they don't have time to react. If the liquid isn't tasty, a quick squirt of the plain water to rinse will help. Immediately put a bit of food in front of him to help get rid of the taste and associate good things with it. Good luck, it takes a bit of practice. At first I remember getting more liquid sprayed on the walls than in the cat.

Re: 6/28 Rusty AMBG 98, +10 265, PMPS 256; 1 extraction

Hi Ella - I am glad to hear that Rusty's dental went well - sorry for the extraction - never a fun thing. Good luck with the meds. Mannie has never liked the liquid stuff either. I manage ok of I straddled him, basically sit on top of him, pull the head back , pry the mouth open and squirt. One as to be quick though. I have on a couple of occasions mixed the liquid in a very small portion of his fav food, and that worked too. Only problem is you have to make sure he eats all the food to get all the meds. I wish you much luck.

very cool on seeing some of the kayak trials. I mentioned that to Mannie, and now he wants to take the kt ties kayaking...

Hope the rest of your day has been great. Rusty - be good. The KTSS is on it's way.

Re: 6/28 Rusty PMPS 256, +4.5 203; 1 extraction

Thanks, guys,
We'll try again tomorrow. This liquid medicine has a thick texture. The main problem is getting it into his mouth. He clamps down and won't open his mouth. I don't think Clavamox would be any easier (judging from my experiences with Stu). I'm going to call the vet tomorrow to see if I can get an a/b that I can inject.

Rusty slept a lot of the evening, but just woke up, ate his FF T&G bedtime snack, and has his dish of bedtime food all ready for him--also a big bowl of water. He must have been dehydrated today because he never drinks water from his bowl. I know they even gave him fluids at the vet's. I had another full blood panel done even though he had one about a month ago because I didn't want any surprises. It looks good. (will put the results in the labs tab on Rusty's SS tomorrow).

We are all exhausted from the evening's struggles and are going to turn in. Edward is not a help giving meds because he is squeemish and that gets transferred to Rusty. Also he is so worried that we will hurt Rusty's mouth. Tomorrow I will try the meds solo. The other thing Rusty wouldn't let me near him with is the antiseptic mouth rinse we're supposed to give. The vet also said I might want to give him Bupe tonight, but I can't even think of getting near his mouth with another syringe!!

Ni ni and thanks again. sorry I didn't get to any condos tonight. Hope all is well in LL

Ella

I'm sorry Rusty had to have another extraction. I hope they gave you some bupe.

Why don't you ask theme or clindamycin tabs and give it in a pill pocket?

Sending hugs and wishes that he will fell better tomorrow.

Awe, sorry to hear tha Rusty had an extraction and you're having difficulty giving the meds. Hoping tomorrow's med mission is a better one for you all. :YMHUG:
