We had some greens overnight which surprised me since her preshots have been high.

This morning after her shot we smelled insulin but her fur was not wet at all and I'm wondering if we are just getting the smell from a little left on the needle when I pull it out? Or do you think if we are smelling insulin then it means a furshot for sure? I swear that needle was in her! I pull away the fur to make sure and I release the syringe when I pull it out. Today I made sure to wait a few seconds before pulling it out. @mosi_yazhi keeps the plunger down when pulling it out -- is that the secret?
 
I feel like when I release the plunger while the needle is still in the cat, it sucks up a drop of insulin back into the needle. Kind of like how you would get a drop dose from a pen/vial. I also keep the needle in for a few seconds to "keep the hole plugged" and give time for the insulin to "soak in" if you will.

I should note that these are things that just kind of make sense for me, personally, because I overthink things, lol, and I make absolutely no claims that this is the 'proper' way to do it :D

Maybe next time try putting your nose directly to her fur and smelling, and then smelling the syringe to see where it's coming from?
 
Often when I am adjusting the amount of insulin after I draw from the pen, I push out a few drops of insulin, some of which wind up sitting on the top of the syringe/base of the needle, so when I inject Ruby there's a little bit of a smell left on her fur from it. I also leave the needle in for a few seconds (or as long as Ruby will put up with it :rolleyes:) after fully pressing the plunger, a habit I developed when administering a drop dose.

Yes, I did this today - pushed out a few drops so maybe the smell is coming from some being left on the needle. I hope so!

Her fur does smell a little, but it's not wet like it was the other night when it seemed like there was an insulin explosion! I'm an overthinker, too, and there is SO much to overthink.
