Well, I just can't seem to be able to get on track lately.
Since last night, I have not been able to do a proper dosing schedule.
I didn't get home from work last night until 7:30, I hour past injection time. Hubby was still at work 'till 11.
I had to leave for work this morning at 5:30, so DH gave shot at 6:20, right as he was leaving for work.
I didn't get home from work tonight until 7:30, so we are just all over the place.

I am sure the wonky schedule has something to do with it, but I just can't find a good dose. For either of them. Of course, it's hard to say when I can't get a reading during the day. I am only basing this on pre-shot numbers and data.
Maybe I can get some eyes/input on this.

Callie Mae
6/27
amps 257, shot .4
pmps (1 hour late) 275, shot .8
+4 104
+11 200, this is also the number I used to base her dose on for 6/28. She received .5u, 1 hour later (6:20)

6/28
amps 200--received .5 from above
pmps (at 7:30) 247, shot .8

Rocky's time follows the same schedule, so I will just format it like Callie Mae's
6/27
amps 328, shot .5
pmps 224, shot .5

6/28
amps 303, shot .5
pmps 285, shot .5

I am home for the next 6 days, so I shouldn't have any problems getting back on a schedule. I just have to figure out a proper dose for the both of them.

Forgot to mention.
I think my PZI has dudded out on me. I will have to look at the prescription bottle to see how long ago I filled it, but I think I read on here somewhere that it only lasts around 30-45 days?
Also, I found it in my hall closet one afternoon, must have put it in there when I was depositing syringes or something in my sharps container. At any rate, it was probably in there for about 5-6 hours.
That was just recently, so I thought the only way to find out, was to look for signs that it wasn't working anymore.
Well, I think I see some signs...

The insulin in theory should last until the vial is almost empty. Some think it poops out sooner, but I don't know if there's any hard conclusion on that.

Now you are going to make all the other newbies scream if you are worried you can't find the right dose and it's still, what, week 1 for you? I think Callie spoiled you that first go round! You are doing great, right now it is just gathering data and figuring out how close or far off things are, and what doses are working well or not.

Just peeked at the SSs.

I like the 0.8 for Callie - 1u looked a hair strong the other day, but everything lower looks too low, so hopefully 0.8 will be the ticket. If not I would go back to 1u, or a skinny 1.

For Rocky, the dose is looking too low to me. I think maybe we all got overexcited about the good results that one day on 0.4. (And I'm still puzzled by that one inverse curve, but maybe that was a bad reading or something?) I can't get a fix on what dose I would try - no more than 1u certainly, but I'm not sure whether I would just jump to 1u, or try 0.75, or something in between. See what others say!

Yea, I definitely got spoiled by Callie Mae.
I only had to give her insulin for not quite a month before she went on a temporary " vacation". I can't even call it a honeymoon!
I think she would probably fair better with a whole unit though. Based on what she's done in the past with it.

Rocky, I don't know. .5 just doesn't seem to be enough. Maybe I should try him on .6 for the next few days while I can keep it regular and see how he handles it again. I know I tried .6 but got scared that he was rebounding, but I don't think I really got a fair assessment of that dose for him.

What do you think?

Wish I could tell what was wrong with this picture to figure out why Callie Mae seems to be so upset by Rocky being here.
She doesn't seem to mind here!...
This was just taken 2 minutes ago.

Oh how cute! Is that Rocky in the background? He is so handsome! She's a lot bigger than him, hehe. He looks good though! From what you had described, I thought he would look a lot worse than that.

Have you ever posted on Health to discuss Callie's uh hmmm "full-figured" profile? I know weight can contribute to diabetes so I'm wondering if that might be an ongoing factor with her? I really don't know much about that angle, since most kitties I have seen that come here have lost a lot of weight from the diabetes. Might be worth exploring the question though? Just a thought. :)

I don't see any signs of rebound in Rocky's #s, I wouldn't worry much about that. If it weren't for that one wacky 71, I think I would go to 0.8 and see how that does for a couple days (barring low #s). Because of the 71, I might try 0.6 again and see if you get wonky results again, or if things are more normal on that. The #s look blah enough at the moment though it's hard to imagine getting much off of a 0.1 increase, but you never know. I'd try to get a nadir check on this dose just to be sure, and then raise a little. The normal starting dose is 1u, so I wouldn't be too afraid of raising some.

Thanks Joanna.
Yea, Callie has ALWAYS been, ummm, full figured.
She did lose some weight though. She's a strange bird, for sure.
I was really concerned about her weight for as long as I can remember.
The first time I had any blood work done on her was when she was 3. I asked the vet to do a complete senior wellness panel because I was concerned about thyroid problems, diabetes, anything. I just knew there had to be a reason she was SO big. But, her blood tests reveled nothing.
The vet don't me not to worry to much about it. Some kitties are like people, and she was just going to be a big girl. I have tried every "diet" out there, and nothing ever worked.

My husband and I spent 3 years traveling around in our motor home, with Callie, of course, and during that time, I never took her for a vet visit. The last visit she had, was given a clean bill of health and a 3 year rabies. That 3 years was up this year. Asked the vet to please do another senior blood panel on her, since she was a senior and all and it had been 5 years since she'd had any blood work. That's when we got the DX.
Well, the visit 3 years ago, she weighed a whopping 27 pounds... ( remember, she was always this big), and her recent visit she weighed 17. 10 pounds is a lot, but not real noticeable when I see her day in and day out. 17 is still big! But I don't feed her more than she needs. Or at least I don't think. She gets about 1 1/2-1 3/4 cans of Friskie's a day. (the 5.5 oz ones).

And yes, that's Rocky!
He has put on some weight in the days since he first got here. He is a big boy. Not too big, but nice and long. I'm told he was always around 14 pounds. He had meat on him. But when he first came here, he felt like a bag of bones when I picked him up. When he went to the vet for his dx, he weighed 10 pounds.
But he is beautiful. And soft as a rabbit. And LOVES his belly rubbed!

I made it sound like me and hubby were just traversing the country in our motor home taking in the sites like a couple a retired folks. Just wanted to clarify that we had a small mobile business we were running that required us to travel to our "spots". Economically, it wasn't working out, which is why we are no longer enjoying that type of lifestyle and had to get real jobs. Although, they don't seem to be working out to good these days either!

I've only taken a quick glance but I'm kinda liking .6u for both of them right now.

Good that you'll be home for the next 6 days to get some data gathered.

I will have to keep an eye on Callie Mae. I am going to check again in about an hour, she got .8 and at +4 she's at 88.

Rocky got .5 and he is not really doing much. +4 246. I kinda think .1 increase isn't going to do much with him.
I am thinking maybe .75 or .8 might be better.

I think Callie's drop may also be contributed to the fact that she FINALLY ate all her supper. Either she got bored with the Friskie's or she is just to good to eat the same as Rocky. I picked up some FF for her on the way home from work and she ate the whole can I put out for her.

But 88 at +4, do you think I will see dangerous numbers in the coming few hours, or does that sound about right?

I am not sure if anyone else is around, so I will respond here-- 88 is a great number ( you know that), you just need to keep a check on her.

You don't want her to go below 50. Just in case she fell in that 50 range do you have some med or high carb food?

I will be up awhile and keep a check on you, But-- if she starts dropping in that 50 range and no one is here--- post on Health. There is a lot more traffic there.

Thanks.
I looked at the bottom of the page after I posted and didn't see anyone else logged on besides me, so i already made a post in health.
Kinda went in panic mode when I thought I was by myself!
Yea, I like 88, I just didn't know if it was good to see such a drop so early in the cycle.
I am going to check again in 15 minutes (+5) and see where she is, and again at +6

yea Robin.
I think I like the idea of that, too.
Especially if she is going to finally start eating again.
Hopefully, with her appetite back, I can get her back to 0!
Even with the new kitty here, she managed to go a day and a half with no insulin. Right before she stopped eating.

I am glad she is not creating any excitement tonight. But, this just shows how much data can be gained by testing. If you had missed the 88, you would have thought the drop was a lot less-- thus effecting your dosing decisions!

Have a good night!

That's cool on the full-timing! I'm in an RV, but have been parked for a few years - I did a little driving around, but not a whole lot before deciding I needed to stay in one place to find a job. (Though that strategy didn't really work til fairly recently.)

My cats are big too. One time they topped 21 lbs but now since they are on wet food 6 months they both have dropped some. Asher the sugar kitty lost some around the time of his dx but now has leveled off around 17 to 18. They are big overall, long, big heads, etc.

My vet told me to feed each cat maximum one 5.5 ounce can of food twice a day, a little less if we can get away with it. We don’t feed quite that much. Usually we do a 3/4 can of the smaller 3 oz cans twice daily, plus chicken snacks after testing and a mid day and mid night snack of (usually) baked chicken. We feed a quarter to half 3 oz can for a mid day snack if we can’t be home.

Does anyone know is there a rule of thumb of how much a cat needs per day or is it an ECID thing again?
