I haven't posted updates on Jose in a while. He has been doing great. The last few days, however have been different. I first noticed that he started eating less than he usually does at each meal time. He's fed 4 times a day every 6 hours using an auto feeder getting a total of 3 3oz cans of PurinaOne One classic chicken pate. For the last three or four days he's eaten roughly 2 cans a day. For the last two days I've seen unusual stool in his box that is much softer and smellier than usual. And then yesterday and today he has had pre shot numbers lower than 100. I'm so excited that I haven't needed to give him insulin but I'm worried that something else is up. Any ideas or advice?

How is Jose's weight doings? From the eating less and foul-smelling diarrhea a GI problem is suspect., especially if losing weight

I took Jose to the vet today. Everything seems normal. I brought in a fecal sample and it was free of parasites. Yesterday's BM wasn't diarrea it was softer but not like it had been. The vet gave him a prescription for Albon and fortiflora. I'm so nervous about giving him the antibiotic though, since the last time he was on one his BG skyrocketed.

Well I was feading him fancy feast classic chicken for a while but found that PurinaOne classic chicken has even fewer carbs so I switched him to that a month ago. He started eating less and less of it just within the last two weeks and is now eating 1/2 of what he used to. I'm thinking I might change back to the fancy feast.

Is Jack eating less of the Purinaone classic chicken because he doesn't like the taste of it anymore? Or do you think his BG levels are more under control and he's processing the food better so not starving all the time?

Is his eating less worrisome to you? About how much food is he eating in a day and how much does he weigh?

I'm not sure. He's never stopped eating like this before. Does that happen? His levels have been under pretty good control for a while. He was eating 3 3oz cans a day and now he's only eating about half of that. He weighed 15 pounds at the end of April and now he's down to 14lbs 2oz. Him not eating as much is worrisome to me because he's always had a pretty healthy appetite. I haven't started the anitibiotics because I'm nervous they are unnecessary and will ruin his BG. He hasn't had anymore diarrea so that's good. I just don't know why he's not eating. Any other ideas or suggestions?

So he's gone from eating 9 ounces of food a day down to 4.5 ounces. Is that right?

I remember when my Wink got better regulated and he went from eating 11-13 ounces of food a day down to 5-6 ounces. He maintains his weight pretty well on that amount. He did need to lose a bit of weight, so his dropping about a pound was just right for him.

One formula for determining how much a cat should eat is 15 calories per pound + 70. So a 14 pound cat should be eating about 280 calories. Each can of Fancy Feast is about 90 calories. So that gives us 3 cans a day to maintain that 14 pound weight for Jose.

Of course, Jose may need to lose a bit of weight. Can you easily feel his ribs or are they padded with fat? Does he have a "waist" area just before his hips? Saggy tummy?

This Body condition score chartmay help you figure out if Jose needs to lose a bit more weight or if he is at his ideal weight. Excess weight can be part of the cause for insulin resistance, so if Jose does need to lose a bit, then that will lead to better regulation.

Thanks for the information Deb! I do think that Jose needs to loose a little bit more weight. He has a little bit of fat covering his ribs. And his belly sticks out to the sides a little bit.

Keep an eye on his weight. Weigh him once every couple of weeks and see what happens. If he isn't losing then I wouldn't worry.
