Well, today started out SUPER horrible for me.
Shot 3 hours early, yes 3 HOURS. Got locked out the house, panic meter on full tilt for most of the morning, but hey, that's why we call it a dance.
I am wore out!!! To read more on that story, just check out my post on health. I don't want to relive it.

Ok, so.
Rocky got his shot early and I wasn't able to check him until 2.5 hours later. Been monitoring him every couple hours since, but I haven't noticed a thing today. Could it be that he dropped so low during the time I wasn't able to check him that he bounced that high and why he is hanging around in the yellow's all day? Or could it be something else?

Callie Mae, love of my life, has not received any insulin so far today. I keep checking her too, but she seems to be doing fine. She managed to go up to 166 at 10:30, I noticed she hadn't eaten all her breakfast either. I put a little water in it (works every time, well mostly... ;-) ) and now she's back under 150. Still didn't eat all her food. Just slurped up all the liquid. Guess she doesn't like it in her bowl and figures that the way to get rid of it. HA, HA. I'll just add more.
Just put a little fresh grated Pecorino Romano on there and she couldn't resist.
Hope that''s ok. I don't have any Parmesan. To me, it's the same thing.

Without rambling, any thoughts on Rocky.

You guys should know by now, I'm long winded!

I saw your post over in Health. Sorry about the start of your day. Sounds like some of mine! Glad you got your coffee. That works for me too. We finally put locks on the front door that use a key code so we didn't have to worry about losing keys or locking them inside. ;-)

I'm not one of the experts here, but given how high he's running and how little he's fallen, even with your shooting early, it looks like too little insulin. He got a better curve when you gave more a few days ago, though he had an awfully early nadir. Two days ago was a very odd curve though -- the 71 almost looks to me like a bad reading given the one later. I'd almost think that notching up slightly to 0.5U might be worth a try to see how he responds. He's still getting used to insulin (and better care from the sounds of things), so he will settle out I'm sure. Was he not being fed well or do you think his low weight was due to poor regulation (or no regulation)?

I guess I missed it, but what was his story? I assume he's a rescue? Point me in the direction of a thread if his story was told elsewhere. My girl was a rescue too. She was the sorriest looking Persian you ever saw when I got her. Very malnourished and frightened, with a thin coat of shortish fur and no undercoat. A few months of love and good food and she blossomed into the most beautiful and sweet cat imaginable. She was just so terribly scared she'd be beaten so it took a while to get her to come out from behind the couch or curtains. Thankfully she didn't have any health problems to overcome like Rocky, other than the malnutrition.

Hope the rest of your day going wonderfully!

He's not technically a rescue.
His owner is an elderly, disabled person who is in the process of a move from one state to another. Rocky's mom moved from NC about a year ago to be closer to a family member who was suppose to aid in HER care since she is on such a LOW fixed income. Well, that turned out to be a disaster for her. She was NOT getting the support she was promised and just could not manage by herself on her income in the place she was set up in. So, now she has come back to NC and is temporarily staying in her oldest daughters house, where Rocky's mom's grandchildren (2 of them) are still living at home, and one of them has a baby!!!
Well, because of the baby, Rocky was not welcome there. This cat is all this lady has. I feel she has been through enough on her own, and didn't want to see her have to lose her only buddy. Even though daughter is allowing her to stay, there is no support in that family.
Rocky is so named because his Mom rescued him from certain death, 9 years ago as an abandoned kitten. Mother must have left him to die because he was the weakest in the litter, or however that works, and made it through like a trooper. Plus, she says he is the "rock" in her life.
Well, I hadn't seen Rocky for the year she was gone, but when she brought him to me the night she got in NC, I couldn't believe it. He had always been a little on the chunky side, not fat, just healthy/chunky. You know, meat on his bones. Well, he was literally a bag of bones. :o I could not believe it was him.
She said he had been drinking lots of water and had lost some weight, but this was a conversation we had before I knew anything about FD. When I found out about her predicament, and knew I was going to be taking Rocky, Callie Mae had since been dx and I was taking the steps necessary for her care. So, I told my friend, before Rocky gets here, you need to change his diet to wet because I won't be putting out any dry in fear Callie Mae would get into it. Well, after a week or so of HIS diet change, she said he wasn't drinking *as much* water and had put back on a few pounds. I would have hated to see him weighing less than when I got him!
Long story short, I suspected FD, started testing him, and sure enough, his numbers were pretty high.
Didn't think I would be able to get him to a vet, I haven't been working but a couple days a week, and I knew his mom couldn't afford a visit, so I was really worried about what to do. I wanted to give him insulin, but, without a proper dx, how would I KNOW it was FD? I didn't want to just shoot insulin into him without KNOWING.
A very dear friend to me knew my delimma, and offered me a loan that I could make payments on.
So grateful, I got Rocky an appt. that afternoon. He was dx, and now, here we are.
He is already feeling Soooooooo much better, has started putting on some weight, even in this short time, it is noticeable, and like many others here, all I have to do is tell him, "Come on Rocky. Time to let me prick your ear", and he comes right up on the dresser in front of the window. That's where I do his testing. Comes every time. Even if he was in the middle of a nap! :-D

Oh wow, sounds like a rotten morning! I really doubt he went low. The insulin typically takes a couple hours to kick in, his PS was high, and the dose is tiny. 0.5 makes sense to me to try as a next step.

Have you had Callie checked out at the vets for the low eating? It worries me nailbite_smile especially that liquid slurping is typical I think when they are not feeling well from certain kinds of things. If she isn't eating normally and it's been several days, I'd be inclined to get the vet's take on it and see if they think blood work is in order.

OK I just saw vet trips aren't really in the budget right now. Maybe post on Health for thoughts? Not eating well can just lead to so many other problems, best to get back on track if you can. I would routinely add water to her food, especially if she likes it - a lot of people do that normally just to get more water in them, and it can certainly help with any number of possible health problems as well. Water be good!!!!!

I started reading a book today "holistic cat care"
its a great book and in it, it was talking abount bringing ina new kitty to your home.
It said you should gradually introduce the 2 cats as they should not be put together right away
You should also have separate litter boxes and food bowls.
Make sure to give Callie Mae extra attention so she does not feel neglected.
It says that this can be very stressful on the 1st kitty, which explains her not really eating and not being happy,
It can take weeks before she is feeling better so be patient with her.

Good book by the way, in case anyway is looking for some reading on cats

Denise and Shakes

Thanks for that. I am heading to the library this week, so I am going to see if that is available.
I wish I could have kept them separated, but my place is so small. So yea, I kinda know Callie Mae is upset by him. But she is also such a good kitty, that she tries not to make a big fuss. I know it bothers her, but she tries. If that makes sense. They both do a real good job of avoiding each other. She pretty much stays with me all day in whatever room I am in, and stays in the bedroom under the bed. And, I keep his food in there. And now, a litter box. I don't keep the door shut and make him stay in that room, he can come out if he wants, but he doesn't. Only at night when I (Callie) go to bed. Her sleeping habits haven't changed, so he takes advantage of the situation and prowls around the house. I hear him playing with some toys.

I'm going to shoot .5 and see how he does with that for a couple days. Callie has been surfin' the blues all day. :-D :-D

On a total side note, I need some reassuring or something. I have been following a newbie, kitty's name Zeek, can't think of the username right now, but poor Zeek has had hypo after hypo after hypo, and now today, he shot 3 units on a 111bg..

I am SO scared for this kitty. Are we going to be seeing another kitty go to the bridge tonight?
I am about to cry again typing this. Please tell me I misread something.

I haven't followed the post but will go look for it. When I get really worried, I cross post on Community and Lantus, as there is usually someone in one of those places, and put a 911 on the crosspost (and then remove it later when things are under control). Do stuff like that if you want, or PM people if there is no one responding, whatever you think is needed. That is a totally manageable situation, either by taking to the ER or treating at home (I would recommend the ER, but sometimes people don't want to go there for a variety of reasons), so don't pull all your hair out!

thread for anyone following along...

They are on Lantus which I don't know a lot about, but lower PSs aren't as scary as with PZI, although it sounds like there are issues in this situation, so it could be scary. It looks like some Lantus folks have responded, but if you think more attention is needed (I haven't read through the thread yet). I would cross-post on Lantus. You just copy the URL from your browser and then paste that into your post, and title it "worried newbie may hypo tonight" or something like that to get people's attention. Back to read the thread!!!

That was exactly how Kim and I felt the night you shot the 9 units and as you know that turned out ok. There may be other things going on that we don't know about.

Prayers to Zeek for staying in safe numbers.

I am going to try this one more time. I hate this keyboard! Something I keep hitting with my finger wipes out my WHOLE post.

Now, I'm glad to see some folks over on that other thread from LL. I had to step away for awhile. My heart couldn't take it.

Robin, looking back to that night, I am SO GRATEFUL to the both of you for staying with me. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry knowing what I now know.
I can't believe I did something so irresponsible to my baby girl.
I will never be able to repay the kindness and caring of all the folks on this board. Absolute Angels from heaven. Every single one of you.

Now, as for my brood.
Callie Mae is still insulin free as of yesterday am, but I still got a +3pm reading on her. She's still surfin' the blues at 109.

Rocky received .5u and at +3, he's had a nice drop to 162 from 254.
I think I will be seeing some green tonight!
I will get one more check on him at +6.
I will have to set my alarm for that one, and I will TRIPLE check to make sure it is set for the right time. Although a spot check isn't as dramatic as a SHOT!

Have a good night all, and I shall *see* you tomorrow!

Don't beat yourself up about Rocky this morning. Life happens :-D .

Honestly, I didn't say that to make you feel bad, I said it because you are now on the other side of the fence with us and to put it into presprective for you as you receive newbies. You are doing such a great job with the newbies.
