Hi, P.S. has been getting 1.75 recently. We planned to drop it to 1U while we are away, but after 1 dose of 1U (I was told to drain the depot so I started vacation dose 4 cycles before leaving) she was at 518 this morning so I freaked out and gave 1.5 instead. Do you think 1.5 would be a safe vacation dose for her?
She is a 2 person cat for testing/shooting so she'll be at the vet in a quiet cat only room with Feliway and a friend visiting her every day. They will only test before each shot.
I had told them to give 1U if she's eating at all and .5 if she is on a hunger strike but her number is above 150. Now I'm thinking 1.5 if she's eating and 1 if she's not.
Advice needed. Thanks!
P.S. If you are looking at SS, the Freestyle Libre Sensor read lower than the AT2. Closer to human meter numbers.

Hope you have a good vacation and Phoebe likes her stay at the vet; so nice that you have a friend visiting her every day! :)
You should have dosing advice!
Thanks. It's actually a quick work trip -- I'll be able to pick her up Friday afternoon. I'm very lucky that I have a friend who works at the vet as a receptionist so she will visit P.S. I am not happy about having to leave town when she is still not regulated, but I can't get out of this trip. Thanks for the good thoughts! So nice to see Ti-Mousse in GREEN!!!

I don't think it's a good idea to jump around in dose. If you give a higher dose with a higher number that could cause her to drop a lot and go lower than is safe because she is clearing a bounce. It's better for her to be a little high without anyone monitoring than to go too low. I'd stick with the 1.0 units.

Thanks. I wasn't sure it was OK for her to be at 518 and above for 8 cycles. She's rarely been above 500 since she was diagnosed. She will have her BG tested before each shot, but not mid cycle.

Phoebe Squeak is a cutie...and yes I agree with Carla - try not to react to the pre-test numbers being high - Lantus likes consistency...steady as she goes is best until you have to leave - at least they won't give her the shot if she's too low...but better to focus on a consistent dose than all the up/down... Best of luck on your trip. I despise traveling for work.

Ha! I hope you don't have to travel for work often. It is upsetting to leave town when Phoebe Squeak is unregulated and it's my first time away from her since she got diabetes, so it's causing extra anxiety. Too keep things as steady as possible, I think I'll stay at 1.5 till we leave and then stick with the plan we had in place (1 unit if eating .5 if on hunger strike) while we are away. Thanks for your advice.

I just did this a few weeks ago, and I feel your pain! Boris still isn't regulated, and I'm slated for a work trip in mid-July. Thankfully Scott will be home, but Boris requires 2 people to test, so we might still do reduced dosing just in case he's too difficult to test alone.

The last time we were away we had a pet sitter experienced in giving insulin come 2x a day and shoot, but she shot blind. I was a nervous wreck! I think you're much better off since Phoebe Squeak will be getting tested.

Do you think PS will eat at the vet's office? If yes, the 1.5 units might be a good away dose. She didn't see any green on it last time. If she won't eat as much, then go with the lower dose.

Thank you. I'm glad at least one of you will be home with Boris next time.

Thank you so much. I was wondering the same thing -- if maybe she should stay at 1.5 as long as she's eating and go down to 1 if she's not. Does that sound like a safe plan to you? We will only be away for 4 cycles, so I'm not sure what is best. I think she will eat but probably not as well as usual.
