Thanks - we're all getting better here.
Today, I left the baby gate up and door open, went to work, came home and found everyone on their respective sides of the fence. The gate is removed when I'm home and I allow him free rein. I'm not sure if I will allow free rein when I'm not here, just to make sure everyone stays safe. ;-)
