Good morning!!

Let's just say I'm NOT having a good day... :YMSIGH: Running on little sleep (I'm SURE you know what I'm talking about!) but can't completely pin that on Hershey. Went to get the insulin out for shot time and couldn't FIND it! It was on the COUNTER!!! AARRGGGHHHH - Would have to guess it's been there - maybe since shot time - so 12 hours?!?! And, to make it worse, we keep all of the pens in the box, so they were ALL on the counter! I figured using it would surely tell if it's still good. OH, how I HOPE it's still good!

Then, Oreo decided to boycott his food, wouldn't eat it even after heating it twice and wouldn't even take it from the spoon. I thought we were past this...

And, to top it off - after giving Hershey his shot, I detected the faint smell of insulin. Got Jessica to smell my hand, too, so I could be sure I was actually smelling it. No dampness detected, so I just don't know...

I should probably start life stuff, but I think while Doug is sleeping I'm going to try to grab another hour (or two) of sleep...

Hoping this day improves -

Libby (& Hershey, too!)

AMPS (321) +12 - Figured with variance he was flat, so shot .5u at 8:05am...I hope :YMSIGH: :YMSIGH:
+3.5 (354)
+5.5 (313)
+11 (328)

PMPS (381) +12 - Shot .5u at 8:00pm
+4 (170) - Fed ~ 1/3meal
+6 (274)
+7 (242) - Fed rest of meal

Re: 6/21 Hershey AMPS (321)

Ohhh I hope the insulin is ok. That would really stink, especially since the whole box was left out. However, my vet has always told me to NOT refrigerate the pens after I started using them. I think that is the rule for humans, since they use the needle part of it. It seems like there are a few here who don't refrigerate the pens, but I may be just dreaming that. Paws crossed for you here.

Poor Oreo! Eating vines being sent.

How is Doug's shoulder? Hope your day gets much better Libby!

Re: 6/21 Hershey AMPS (321)

The paperwork w/ the Lev says you don't need to refrigerate, but what I've read here is that the life expectancy of the pen is extended when it is. I expect you're fine! And because the pens are dark, I don't think the light will affect it like the glass vials, so you may not need to store the open one in the box.

Went by Walgreens last night for strips (will probably have 100 in the mail today!), and asked if they were eligible for the Prescription Savings Plan. She said I needed a script for them, but they would be... SO... if you ever run out & need to pick some up... make sure you've got a script for the test strips. Depending on your meter, it probably would only bring them down to the Wal-Mart price, but to not have to deal w/ Wal-Mart is often worth it!...unless of course, you have one of the Relion meters!

Re: 6/21 Hershey AMPS (321)

Chances are that the insulin is OK. I don't keep the pen I'm using in the box. One reason is just what happened to you. The other reason is if you drop a pen, it's not that big of a headache if there are other pens in the box in the refrigerator. If you drop the entire box, all of your insulin could be in jeopardy.

It's possible that what you smelled was from a drop of insulin that was on the outside of the syringe. When I'm adjusting the dose, there's often a drop or two of insulin on the syringe that may get transferred to Gabby's fur.

(FYI - Relion strips are only available at Walmart. However, you can use Arkay strips -- Arkay manufactures the Relion meter. Those strips are available on-line through ADW.)

Re: 6/21 Hershey AMPS (321) +3.5(354)

+3.5 (354)

Great...so - insulin bad? fur shot? partial fur shot? food hasn't cleared? still settling into dose? Let's go with one of the latter... :YMSIGH: At least I probably don't have to worry about leaving him for a while. Have to take Doug to see a supervisor to send him to an employee nurse type person to say he can go see someone. Good grief!

Re: 6/21 Hershey AMPS (321) +3.5(354)

Hi guys .. I'm sorry you're having such a rough day .. I think we've all been there before .. hoping tomorrow is better for you guys! Hershey, work that insulin your bean gave you and make her smile! Oreo, eat up now .. and make your bean :-D Hang in there!!

Re: 6/21 Hershey AMPS (321) +3.5(354) +5.5(313)

Went ahead tested/fed at +5.5 since we're still here. Seems yesterday's supervisor told him to see today's supervisor. When he reached him today, he was in mtg until after lunch and it could've been handled yesterday. Now, it seems it needs to be done online and he said he'd call at 1pm...phone just rang at 1:36pm. I mean, HEY!, not like Doug is in pain or anything.....Now, he needs copies of yesterday's paperwork so we can be sent to the employee nurse type person so he can be seen by someone who can help him. Not optimistic that THAT's going to happen today...UGH!

+5.5 (313)

((((Libby)))) I'm sorry you're having such a rough day. Remember it's a marathon, not a sprint. This is just one cycle for Hershey and it's not terrible. I know he'll have better ones soon. Hope Doug's stuff gets straightened around. That is maddening. And Oreo, what's up with your appy? Eat yer fuds, your bean has plenty of other stuff to deal with.
Liz

Re: 6/21 Hershey AMPS (321) +3.5(354) +5.5(313) +11(328)

Thanks, y'all, for the encouragement. I sure needed it today!

We cleared the first two hurdles - paperwork with the supervisor and employee health. But, it was the end of business day, so we still don't have an appt to see anyone who can actually HELP Doug. In fact, the PA didn't seem to understand why he hadn't been helped, yet. So, now we hope for tomorrow...Maddening is a good word for it, Liz!!

Finally got Oreo to eat. He'll eat DRYER SHEETS but gets finicky about cat food - go figure!

+11 (328) - SO glad it's only an hour until the next cycle.

Try putting a dryer sheet under his bowl? :-)

I hope you see less pink this cycle. And, I hope those pain meds are helping Doug's shoulder since the MDs can't seem to figure out how to get Doug the treatment he needs.

(((Libby)))

What a day you and Doug have had....well, he's had more than just today. Sending many hugs and healing vines to him and hoping tomorrow will be better.

When I open a new box, I leave the pen that I'm using separate from the others in the cheese drawer. That way, I never have to worry that I forgot which pen I'm using and draw from all of them.

Here's hoping we see Hershey coming down from that stinkus pinkus.

Did you get my PM on the calipers?

Re: 6/21 Hershey PMPS(381)

You know, I kept worrying that we'd leave the whole box out. But, then I started worrying about knocking the loose one out of the fridge or otherwise mistreating it. I usually check behind myself, but shot time happened at supper and pill time last night - which is definitely not the norm... :YMSIGH:

Doug gave him his PM shot (I helped hold Hershey in his lap.) and it was a good one, so guess we'll soon know if the insulin went bad?

PMPS (381) +12 - Shot .5u at 8:00pm

  Carl - That's probably the only thing I HAVEN'T tried!

Thanks, y'all, for the well wishes for Doug, too. My hat is off to those of you who daily take care of people and furry friends who need extra attention!

Off to catch up a little on what I've missed in the forum today -

Re: HELP, PLS - 6/21 Hershey PMPS(381) +4(170)

+4 (170) Wondering if I should feed him some now to help slow down the falling numbers. And, if so, should I go ahead and feed all of the +6 meal or only part of it?

Good news is the insulin is still good!!!

Heading to help Doug shower and will check back when I'm finished. THANKS!!

Re: HELP, PLS - 6/21 Hershey PMPS(381) +4(170)

It looks like he's onsetting. I'd give him some low carb...not all of it..you might need some later.

Re: HELP, PLS - 6/21 Hershey PMPS(381) +4(170)

Hey Hershey, welcome back!
Libby, looks like the insulin is still good. Hershey remembered what .5 is supposed to be like.

Re: HELP, PLS - 6/21 Hershey PMPS(381) +4(170)

Thanks, Marje - that's what I was thinking, but wanted some more experienced eyes to confirm - Great! I think I hear him hairballin'! YUCK!!

+4 - Fed ~1/3meal - Didn't want to go to bed without +6 to be sure
+6 (274) - Wonder if food inflated or stress inflated (hairball) -
+7 (242) - Fed rest of meal

Went ahead and fed Oreo full meal at +4, since he's been so finicky about eating. He gobbled it up. Just finished another meal at +7. Hopefully, whatever his problem was has passed.

Thanks, again, Marje!!

Doubt I'll be able to get up for any more tests before shot time...goodnight...

Hi Libby,
I am so glad that the insulin is still good!
there's one less thing to worry about!
Hope Doug is feeling better and you have a better day today!
