Hello all,
I've been away for a few days and hubby was taking care of the kitties. He played around quite a bit with dosages depending on the numbers he was seeing. While I'm not sure if this is a good thing to do Fax seems to be doing great. He's just had a big bath and is currently flat out on the floor having a nap. I see on his spreadsheet that on Saturday he dosed 4units and Fax had a really nice green day. Should I leave the dose at that for now?
This morning he dosed only 2.5 due to a low preshot number. I just tested at +2 and he seems to be coming down nicely today.
All of the moving around with dosages has confused me as to where I keep him now!!!

Thanks and have a great day!

Bumpity bump bump.

From what I understand, Lantus likes consistency and the numbers might be a reflection of the different dosages. I don't know. Bumping up so hopefully one of the experts can weigh in soon. You may want to add "Dosage question" at the end of your subject line to help them prioritize which condos they visit first.

Bumpity bump!

Re: 6/21 FAX AMPS 232 +2@207

I just spoke with hubby about the weekend. On Saturday he was feeding him HC throughout the green test results.
This has got me thinking...
Last year when Fax was first diagnosed we were feeding him Hill's diabetic wet morning and night and then a diabetic dry food midday (or if we weren't home midday he would get some diabetic dry mixed with AM and PM meals). He was getting 4 units twice daily. I am wondering if the only reason this dose worked for him was because of the higher carb food he was getting?
Am I right in thinking that a good green day should not require HC snacks to keep numbers from dropping too low?

There's no need to feed high carb food unless you're at a dangerously low number or there's a huge early drop---I don't see that in your spreadsheet. My general rule was that I fed a little HC if Bandit was below 50, and I fed him some of his regular food or a teaspoon of yogurt with natural sugar if he was between 50 and 70 and I wasn't home or if i was sleeping so I couldn't monitor him to see if he was dropping. If you're home to test, there's no need to try and raise BG unless he drops below 50.

The goal is to keep his BG between 60-120 as long as you possibly can throughout the day, so feeding HC food can be counterproductive to this goal.

June 16th and 19th both show a big early drop, do they not? June 14th as well has a big drop when he was tested at +4.
If not, what constitutes a big drop?

I can see why you are confused! Usually changing doses just makes them more bouncy, so I would pick a dose to try to hold for at least a few days (unless he drops too low). 4.5 was looking pretty good, unless you don't want that much green, then I would go with 4 or 4.25.

Do you know how much HC he was getting in the green cycles?

About the early drops, some people whose cats are prone to dropping early will spread out their cats' meals into smaller feedings at PS, +1, +2, +3 to help soften those drops. With Fax, it looks like you can tell by +1 what kind of cycle he will be having. If +1 is lower than PS, you can try feeding some low carb to see if that slows him down.
