I wanted to update you all after Charlie's dental surgery yesterday. I was ridiculously nervous. I walked into the vet with tears in my eyes. The vet tech was so sweet and walked me through each item on the agenda and what exactly would happen. I felt better and knew he was in good hands. They called after he was done and told me there were two problem teeth. Both are on either side of the bottom of his mouth right behind his canines. On the one, the roots had already decayed and bone had begun to fill in so they did a crown amputation. On the other side, they did a full extraction. Charlie did great and they said he was a perfect candidate for anesthesia and dental work.

They sent me home with 6mg onsior tablets to give him once a day for the next three days. Some clindamycin solution to make sure no infection forms while he is healing, I am to give him 1ml a day until the bottle is gone. Lastly, they gave me some preloaded syringes of buprenorphine to give as needed, they are 0.3ML.

Once I got him home, he went right to the food bowl and started eating so he must not have been too bothered! He seemed a little loopy last night but he was much better than I was expecting. This morning I started with the onsior and clindamycin. I also have him 0.25 of one of the buprenorphine syringes. I could tell that he was a little uncomfortable but still seemed to be doing pretty good so I figured I'd just give him a little of the buprenorphine. When I went home for my lunch, he was just chilling in his bed. Seemed to be doing great.

I'm excited to see if we can see some better BG numbers now that his mouth is healthier.

It's great the dental went so well! He's a champ. :)

Warning about clindamycin. While it's a great antibiotic for mouth issues, two things to be aware of. First, the liquid is awful tasting, you might want to make sure he has a chaser of something tasty like Churu. Second, it's a very strong antibiotic that can also kill the good tummy flora. I'd get some probiotics to give him too, a couple hours apart from the antibiotic.

Don't forget to mention the dental on the spreadsheet. 7-10 days from now you might start seeing an impact on his numbers. That's about how long the inflammation might take to reduce. He will fell much better soon.

That makes sense about the taste of clindamycin... he reallllly didn't like getting it this morning but I did follow it up with a churu. He had some diarrhea but I bet that's from the antibiotic. I know they can be tough on the stomach, so I'll get him some probiotics for sure!! Thanks for all your advice!:)

Neko had to take clindamycin a couple times, and I have personal experience with it too. :blackeye: Don't be surprised if he goes off his food a bit until the AB gets working.
