Rosa is still doing well OTJ. She read a little higher this morning at 98 but she hadn't had her walk before her test today AND she'd not long run head-first into the screen door trying to rush out while the front door was open, so I was happy to see anything below 100!! We also have a suspicion that she might have stolen a forbidden treat last night - our housemate decided that throwing treats around in the kitchen for the cats to find was a good game for them even after I told him that Rosa couldn't have any and I didn't want them left laying around on the floor. I very much doubt that all of them were found at the time and I can't imagine Rosa could have resisted if she found one in the middle of the night. I was very happy to find that her vet visit mid week for a nail trim hadn't pushed her numbers up for days afterwards - I was quite worried taking her in as she gets so stressed and, even though I know it's something I can't avoid for her, it does worry me that enough instances of stress might be enough to throw her out of remission. I was also able to get Regan weighed - I'd told our housemate several times that she's been gaining weight as a result of him feeding her treats and dry food. The vet confirmed that she's gained weight (only a little, but it really shows on her as she's not a big-boned cat), so I came home armed with proof that the extra treats aren't doing her health any good at all.

Overall, Rosa seems happy and healthy. The vet was happy with her weight and how she's looking, which is always good news. The next hurdle we'll have to negotiate is whether or not to give her an annual dental - if we do, then it will be due at the end of August. I'm thinking of taking her in ahead of that so we can make an informed decision about whether or not she really needs it to be an annual event or whether we can put it off for a bit longer (although we'll only do that if her teeth appear to be clean and in good condition).

I've attached a couple of pics I took - one of each of the cats - this week. Rosa is very comfortable in the cardboard box she's adopted as her own. She claimed it while the packing paper was still in it - I put 2 blankets on top of the paper to make her more comfortable, but she decided she liked the paper better and has carefully moved things around in there so that the blankets are UNDER the paper. And Regan is in one of her favorite places - there's no reason for that blanket box to be on top of a chair except that we ran out of floor space when we had to move things around to get a bit more airflow at floor level for the computers during the warmer weather. But the minute it was on the chair (it's well supported and at no risk of falling) she decided it was the BEST PLACE EVER to sleep!!

Hi April - thanks for the update. :D Your girls look very comfy in their pics. Great news on the vetty visit results. Good luck making the decision on a dental. It's always great to go to a vetty dentist who does X-rays. I took Neko in for a dental in January, because she was grinding her teeth and I wanted to see what was causing it. Her vetty had done a physical a couple weeks before hand and declared her mouth fine except a little tartar. Long story short, the dental X-ray found a tooth that had a root that had almost disappeared and a channel down to the jaw line. No visible signs at the dental visual inspection. Early signs of something also going on in her upper canines - but those are just on "watch" for now. Same thing happened to Marje & Gracie. Gracie's numbers were up a titch and she was tilting to one side to eat, visual inspection fine, tooth came out after dental X-rays. Lots hides below the gum line.

Thanks Wendy! :D Our vet does do dental X-rays, but last time they did them while Rosa was already anesthetized because they'd been able to see just from looking in her mouth that she definitely needed the dental doing - her teeth weren't looking too pretty at that point. She had a deep clean and one extraction, but she also had another tooth that was so close to being completely resorbed that they said there wasn't any point doing anything with it by then. I'll have to ask them if they'd be prepared to do X-rays ahead of us making the decision on whether or not to do a full dental this time around - thanks for the heads-up on that...it's not something I'd have thought of asking about otherwise! I do want to get dental X-rays done for Regan too - they said her teeth looked really good at her last annual check-up with no tartar and no obvious decay but again that's no guarantee that there isn't something going on that we can't see. I think I'll call them in the next week or two and see what our options are with our own vet, or if they'd recommend one of the local vet hospitals, especially for Rosa, as she will have to be sedated for X-rays - there's no way she'll sit still for them without.

When I last did the dental, they did anesthesia for the X-rays, then did the dental right after that. I went to a dental specialist - it cost a bit more, but Neko has a heart murmur and I wanted the extra monitoring.

Aw, April, thanks for sharing those cute pics of your little sweeties. Kitties seem to LOVE cardboard boxes; everytime I do a Costco run, one of my three claims the box for him/herself. Glad to hear that Rosa is still doing well OTJ and that her vet visit went well.
P.S. I've been reading your and Wendy's conversation about dental, and it's been really helpful, thanks you two.

That's one of the reasons I want to start thinking about Rosa's dental well in advance, Wendy. I want to make sure I've got all the options figured out and then I can make a decision on whether to use our regular vet or a specialist (on an initial basis, I'm in favor of a specialist to make as certain as I can that nothing goes wrong for Rosa or sets her back too much, though that will depend on how confident our vet is that she can do the dental without any problems). It will also depend on which of the vets at our practice can do the dental - I have a lot of respect for the owner who hasn't been too pushy about prescription foods or been too concerned about how I managed Rosa's diabetes with minimum input from them - she has a number of years more experience than the other vets there and seems to be mixing a healthy dose of common sense with what she learned in school - but the vet they see most often I'm really not quite so sure about. She's a nice vet and has a great manner with the cats, but just doesn't inspire me with the same confidence especially since Rosa's diagnosis.

Thanks for looking in Lori! :D Every box that comes into the house here seems to end up claimed by one of the cats - I've seen them squeeze themselves into boxes that are way too small just because it's a box and it's there!! ;)

Such beautiful girls :D

I've thought it before but now I'm going to say it - I really feel like strangling your housemate! I guess there's nothing to be done if they are willing to put their own cat at risk and don't understand why and but there is no excuse for not following your rules with your cats

Thanks everyone! :D

@Vyktors Mum - believe me, so do I...frequently! I know he means well, but he went looking for Regan last night to give her some of the treats so she didn't "miss out" only 2 days after I'd told him she HAS to have less treats because the vet said she's gained weight. And believe me, if she finishes up diabetic too, he's paying for her insulin! :P But to risk Rosa getting treats was just going too far. He knew I was mad at him, but he was trying to joke about it - we were trying to get some chill time and watch a movie and he asked Michael to look at a problem on his laptop and said he thought I was mad at him for that. He knows full well what I was actually mad about was those treats laying around all over the kitchen floor but he just doesn't seem to want to believe that they're a problem. :arghh: What worries me most is what happens when we're away overnight - I've got no control over that at all of course which does worry me. So far, I think he's stuck to the rules but we've not been away for more than 48 hours at any point so far either.
