Champ was up bright and early wanting food (as usual) so I gave him a little tuna to tide him over until breakfast. Because I can't seem to feed him less often, I've decided to try to feed him less food as often. I have to get the weight off him at all costs. His weight is up again and I know it's because he lies around all the time now. Today seems especially bad. He walks very slowly when he will walk. He doesn't even like to sit anymore. He gets where he wants to be and just plops over. He just doesn't seem to have any strength in his legs. I finally found an article that says advanced neuropathy can affect the front legs, not just the back. Even though Champ isn't walking on his hocks, he doesn't walk on his toes either. He has about an inch or two touching the ground in the back and about two inches touching down on the front. When he's lying down, every once in a while one of his front legs will "jump," like a big nerve twitch. I saw a link that Sienne had put in someone else's condo this morning about the methyl B12 so I clicked and bought. It should be here in about a week. If this isn't neuropathy, it's something else that will take away his ability to walk and that can't happen. Work is crazy today so hopefully that will keep me from dwelling on this too much today.

Once I get the methyl B12, how much should I give him to start and then should I escalate the dose and, if so, to what maximum? I know it's water soluable and I can't overdose him, but I also don't want to waste it by giving more than his body will use.

Has he had general bloodwork done at the vet lately? It might be worth checking out renal values, CBC, and potassium levels.

It's been 2.5 months since he was diagnosed and he had all that blood work done then. Everything was completely normal except glucose value. I even had the pancreatitis test done and it was low normal. I certainly can't afford to have the testing repeated again so soon.

Hi guys .. I'm sorry to hear that champ is struggling .. I don't have any answers about the B 12 but enough people on here use it so you should get an answer before to long .. you're such a good mom about getting his meds and getting him better!

OK. That is quite recent. It is unlikely to have gone downhill enough to affect walking that quickly.

I am not sure if you have seen this link on neuropathy:

Linda, thank you so much for that link!! I was specifically told by my vet when I asked if Champ's wobbly front leg could be neuropathy that Champ's numbers would have to be much higher for this to occur (he was in the 200-300's all the time then). After reading that link, where it says one of the signs is the cat walking on his wrists, well that's what Champ is doing!! This is the first time I've read anything stating this was a symptom. It really upsets me that I've let my poor cat go so long struggling with this when I could have, and should have, started him on this simple vitamin supplement. I ordered some from Amazon early this morning and I've already received an email stating they've shipped so I'll start them as soon as I get them. Thank you so much for this link. While I feel just awful about this, I also now feel hopeful that it can be turned around.

Xobaline is formulated for cats. It's available through Amazon. The tablets are 3 mg. You crush them into food. It's a water soluble vitamin so whatever isn't being metabolized is excreted.

I give Willy 4,000 mcg per day (4 1mg pills, 2 with each meal). I started with 2 and worked up to 4. We didn't see improvements until we got to 4. I have been considering moving up to 5 (or 6 to keep it even). I dissolve them or crush them in water and add it to his food.

informative condo today. I hope Champ will get good results on the methyl B12. I should probably try that for Jazzy.

Hi to you too Patty, oh and Champ too of course.

Not to be a Debby Downer about methyl B12, but i've got Leo on a dose of 7 mg/day now and i'm still not seeing any results   But then again, who knows how bad it might be if he wasn't on the B12. I know i'm using the right stuff, i've talked to a few different people on this forum about whether or not i've got the right stuff, it's not the cat stuff that you ordered, i'm wondering if i should try that instead. Leo's vet says good regulation is pretty much the only answer, and that could take up to 6 months according to him  It breaks my heart to see him walk around.

Let me know how the stuff that you ordered works.

Gee Patty, I'm so sorry that Champ is having such a difficult time. You are too hard on yourself. You are a wonderful Mama bean and you DID notice that there was something wrong. A good outlook would be one where you remain optimistic about the results from the B12. Champ is lucky to have a companion like you.

Oh Patty. I'm so sorry Champ is having such a hard time. We don't have any experience with B12, but so many here use it. Hope you have a good evening. Hang in there!

Hi Patty-

I just wanted to add my well-wishes for Champ and the B12. I hope it helps him ASAP! Don't be so hard on yourself...you've been doing everything right for Champ. There's no way any of us can instantly know all the ins and outs of this whole FD thing...there's a steep learning curve here! Champ is lucky to have you as his bean, and I'm sure he knows that.

Have a lovely evening...

Amy

Very informative condo today. I am sorry that Champ is having trouble. You have been proactive, and did act when you noticed that there might be a problem. You are a good bean, no thinking otherwise.... I have heard from others that it can take a while to see results, so don't worry if he isn't immediately better.

Have a good night. you too Champ!
