Morning everyone,

Happy Father's day!

Weird this morning. I checked at +10 and he was 292. I was thinking he was going to be pretty high at pre-shot time, but he came down to 242! I tested again about 10 minutes later to make sure the reading was right and it was 230. Wow!
We have experienced this before, where he drops after he eats. I think he gets stressed when he's hungry (as do I).

Thanks for the advice yesterday to stick with the dose. Going to see my father for the day, so I won't be able to test as much.

I hope everyone has a great day!

Good morning Liz, I'm sorry I didn't get back to your condo yesterday to answer your questions.

Hi Laurie,

Thanks for the warm welcome and the reply!

I did have a question though. What is considered ketone-prone? I was considering raising the dose after 6 cycles because he's had ketones before, but just once. Does that make him ketone-prone? He's also still very, very skinny, not sure if that makes a difference.

I am checking for ketones and so far, so good (paws crossed).

Some cats have ketones at diagnosis, or at one particular point in time, but never have them again. It's always wise to keep a close eye on ketones in any unregulated cat...an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure with ketones! However, just because they have ketones once, that does not necessarily make them ketone prone. Some cats repeatedly throw ketones, those cats are ketone prone. Since you are testing, could you please note on your SS when you test for ketones? I have a tendency to bug anyone with a ketone history if I don't see those tests noted on the SS. ;-)

I was going to see how the day went. I was hoping he would come down a bit more. All these yellows seem to be taking a toll on him. He's moving very slowly and not meowing or purring anymore. Although he seems to be enjoying the day... he's smiling, if you know what I mean.

And good point about the night spot checks. Our schedule has us shoot right before we go to sleep, but tonight not being a work night, we'll try to get some more data.

Thanks again!!! It can be so confusing and any advice is more than welcome.

Nice job getting PM tests last night! You don't necessarily need to get a before bed check, it can be at another time during the PM cycle. I like to see an early cycle test though, because that will often give you an idea how active the cycle will be....then you can decide whether you will need to keep testing or set an alarm to get a mid cycle test if necessary. I'm not sure what your schedule is like, sometimes we suggest moving the shot time so you can get an early cycle test before you go to sleep or leave for work. What do you think?

One other thing....it may not necessarily be the case, but there was one other cat that had consistant yellow readings with the Freestyle and it turned out to be a bad meter. Would it be possible to get a test or two with your backup meter to confirm the test results you are seeing? I use a Relion Confirm as my primary, and I have a Freestyle Lite as a backup...they read within a few points of each other, at least in the under 100 range. Please note that I'm not saying the Freestyle is a bad meter...just that there was one case that looked just like this so it makes me wonder....

Re: 6/19 Sylvan AMPS 242 +3 238/262 (Meter check)

Hi Laurie:

Thanks so much!

I have the Relion as a back up meter and did some tests:

+3 With the same blood drop:
The Freestyle - 249
The Relion - 334 (maybe this is more accurate?).

I waited about 10 minutes and:
Freestyle - 238
Relion - 262

I'm going to keep comparing for a few more cycles.

I tested his ketones yesterday and there were none. I'll definitely start adding the ketone tests to his chart.
I'll also try to check his ketones tonight if I can catch him.

Thanks for your help!
Liz and Sylvan
