Good Sunday Morning, Everyone,

Thanks for all your responses about anesthesia for routine bloodwork. I have decided not to have the bloodwork done until the fall and I will talk to the vet on Wednesday about why he feels it necessary to put Rusty under just to draw blood. (I suspect it was because Stu was such a handful; but maybe he does it regardless of the cat.) In any event, since we just got back on track with Rusty's bgs, I don't want to miss a shot because of anesthesia. Also, I am apprehensive in general, as I'm sure everyone here appreciates right now.

It is a beautiful day here today. Happy Fathers' Day to all Dads out there! Rusty had a good night, good test, good shot, 2 sittings of breakfast, and is napping in his basket. I'm going to rouse him in a few minutes so he can go outside. Tomorrow Edward (who is feeling much better; I don't think it was a cold, but maybe an allergy) and I are going to lead a paddle on Indian Lake from our camp. We are just going to go down for the day and Rusty will stay home this trip (too much to do here this week to spend it at camp). It's only an hour and 20 minutes away. So we'll leave food in the Automat, leave on the radio so he can listen to classical music and hone his skills, and be back in time for PMPS. Maybe some of his pals would like to come here to chillax with him.

Wishing you all a fine Fathers' Day and sending healing vines to all kitties and beans who could use them,

Ella & Rusty

Good morning Ella....

Glad to hear that Edward is feeling better. And hope Rusty has a chance to sniff or even romp with Shadow today.

Have good day.

Re: 6/19 Rusty AMPS 108

Hi Ella, my former Vet who treated my feisty GA Siamese used to always put him under, as he would fight them. I stopped going to this Vet for that reason and also I needed a Specialist. I found another Vet, and this Vet and the Vet Techs handled him just fine. He still fought with them, but they didn't let him bully them. This former Vet did not want to take the chance of getting scratched or bitten nor wanted her Techs to get hurt (this is what she told me) when I asked her why the anesthesia, plus it makes their job easier, but the poor kitty. It will be interesting to hear your Vet's reason. Maybe it is just a light sedation.

Re: 6/19 Rusty AMPS 108

I'm also surprised that the vets feel that they need to sedate him for bloodwork. Junior has earned a reputation with vets no matter where we go (back when we lived in Southern California, here in Chicago, ER Vets). They throw a towel over him and label his carrier with *Caution* and I don't recall them ever sedating him.

I think there are different types of sedation too where some are safer than others. It would be interesting to hear the vet's rationale.

Re: 6/19 Rusty AMPS 108

Morning!

A good decision on the BW I think. I too would be interested in your vets reasoning for the anesthesia. Well, in any event - good for you. Rusty - you have been spared! Are his ears better?

I am glad that Edwards is feeling better too. YAY!

Enjoy your day today - I hope it is a good one. Nice on the paddle tomrrow - that sounds great.

Rusty!!! SWEET! I am on my way, I need SUN today..... - hey - you are all alone tomorrow? I can bring the gang and we can all hang out at your place. That would be so cool. See you in a few - we can plan for tomorrow. Will Shadow be there? I wanna meet him... ~~ Mannie

Re: 6/19 Rusty AMPS 108

hi ella, another perfect amps for rusty - he's on a roll. i wouldn't want to mess with that either! you work too hard to get him there.

love the sound of your meadowflower northern lawn! just sounds lovely!

have a nice sunday - don't forget to putter a little bit! i have this image of rusty tomorrow, wearing his cigar jacket and sitting in a recliner while the classical music is playing!

Re: 6/19 Rusty AMPS 108

I've never heard of sedating for a blood draw before. My Mario is pretty fiesty, and anesthesia has never been mentioned at my vet. I don't blame you for holding off.

Have a great day!!

Re: 6/19 Rusty AMPS 108

Our old vet accidentally put our civie cat, Smokey under. The vet brought Smokey in the back to do routine blood work, then someone confused him with another cat and knocked him out. Everything turned out fine, but we switched vets after that. I just hate how disoriented and tired they are when they wake up.

Thanks for the healing vines and have a great day!

Re: 6/19 Rusty AMPS 108

Beautiful numbers Rusty!!

I have never been asked to withhold insulin the morning of bloodwork Ella.
The anesthesia and no insulin was only for dental days in our case.
My two have been brought in another room when blood was drawn but they never had to be sedated for that.
(Just wondering if there is a vet that you might know of in the city when you go down there....?? If there was, you could coordinate everyone's doctor appointments for the big city trips...know what I mean?) ;-)
Hope you guys have a great day today...keep up the great work Rusty boy!!

Re: 6/19 Rusty AMPS 108, +5.5 104

Hi again, Many thanks for your opinions and anecdotes about the anesthesia question. I know that when the vet put Stu under it was only for a brief time. I don't know what he used. After I find out on Wednesday, I'm going to P.M. Lisa (Do Lou) and ask her what the vets in her practice do. Pat, we have thought about taking Rusty to a NY vet (actually to the wonderful vet hospital in Bedford Hills, where they were so kind to Stu in his last hours and where we felt that they were extremely competent), but our time in the city is so restricted and the trip down there is so stressful for Rusty that we will only go that route if it becomes necessary).

Rusty and Shadow had another "meeting" this morning. We were not outdoors for 5 minutes when Shadow showed up. Rusty immediately went up to him and touched noses, then growled a little and Shadow frisked off. He was back almost immediately and they sat, each in his own spot, for a while. Shadow tried to open the door to our house (glad that didn't happen!). Then Shadow ran off and a little later Rusty ran in the same direction and they had a face off and touched noses again. Then Rusty chased Shadow up a tree!! It was a cedar tree and had nice, rough bark, but the poor kitty didn't know how to get down. (he was up about 12 feet). Finally he came down a bit head first and then jumped. Rusty watched. Then we took Rusty in, since we wanted to go for a walk.

Perhaps the encounter prevented Rusty's bg from going down? (but I didn't test until 1 1/2 hours later, so that doesn't seem likely). Or maybe this is one of those flat, blue days. Whatever. Rusty is fine and is on the futon, taking his usual post-luncheon down time.

Off now to cut the "Northern lawn". I'll have to do it myself, because Edward's allergies are acting up.
Ella
Hi Gang, Yes, come to my place today--and tomorrow--and we'll chillax. I'll introduce you to the Shadow. He likes to play.

Re: 6/19 Rusty AMPS 108, +5.5 104

Morning Ella and Rusty,

Leo's vet does the exact same thing to Leo, the first time i brought him in for bloodwork they left with him and came back not even 5 minutes later and said he was "too much" for the vet to handle and they would have to sedate him, he was doped up for hours and even the next day as well. When he was dx, i argued about it because i know anesthesia is alot for the body to handle, more so when they are sick. I don't know what he used that time, but it was very light and Leo was ok within a half hour. I feel your apprehension, i would feel the exact same way. The next time i will argue again, and if he doesn't want to do it, i'll find someone else that will. I wonder if the vet would allow you in with Rusty so you can try holding him?

Sounds like Shadow is trying really hard to be friends with Rusty. I'm sure Rusty would love listening to classical music tomorrow, does he usually listen to classical? Leo gets Animal Planet on tv when i leave.

And  at Julie's smoking jacket comment.

Have a great day Ella and Rusty!

Re: 6/19 Rusty AMPS 108, +5.5 104

Oh goody, I got my Rusty/Shadow fix for the day :-D
Hi Ella. What is it they say about flat numbers all day? Oh yeah, yer gonna be up all night testing the geens

Hmmm, allergies was my hubby's excuse for me to mow. We have pines everywhere, and when his skin touched them, he broke out in a rash.
He finally solved the problem by having me saw off the first five or so, feet of the branches, so he could ride the tractor under them. :-D

Re: 6/19 Rusty AMPS 108, +5.5 104

Well. it's a nice place to be flat. :-D I agree too on the anesthesia, blood work is usually done before dentals to make sure anesthesia is safe. Have you ever tried Rescue Remedy to soothe him before taking him in? You being with him for the draw is a good idea too.

Have a fun paddle tomorrow, I know Rusty will enjoy the music. I always leave it on for Tess too. At least now that we finally have a full time classical station

Rusty, you got sun today? Sweet! And Alone all day tomorrow? Maybe we could come today and have a sleep over! I lubs your porches! -- Tess

Re: 6/19 Rusty AMPS 108, +5.5 104

hi Ella,
Rocket has always been a handful at the vets but that has never meant for them to put him under to get blood out....he gives them quite the workout and he himself gets all worked up...but i have never heard of vets putting kitties under to get blood out....like you i would hesitate....

when i took Rocket to see the neuro vet it was funny to see him test Rocket....doing the coordination stuff...it was amusing to see the neuro vet....he was soooo afraid of Rocket...and i thought to myself "are you kidding me?"...so i guess not all vets UNDERSTAND and know how to DEAL with CATS....

glad to know Edward is feeling better....

hope you three enjoy the rest of the day!

Re: 6/19 Rusty AMPS 108, +5.5 104

A nice surf for Rusty today and I'm glad he is feeling better. Healing vines for Edward for his allergies. I hope you all can get your paddling in tomorrow.

I think Gracie and Tobey would love to spend another day at Rusty's and keep him company!!

Rusty...we heard you been chasing Shadow up a tree!!! You can climb a tree???!!! Maybe you can show us how!!!!
