Sharon's allergies/asthma have gotten progressively worse since shes been here. She had these issues when she was a kid, but she's been around cats a lot lately and has stayed at my house before and hasn't had any problems. I'm not sure what has triggered it this time, but I can't leave her alone here.

I need to leave soon - DH is stranded in PA until I go pick him up. In my scramble to figure out how to take care of Orange while I'm gone the best I came up with is to have Sharon stay at a friend's house without cats and have her come over twice a day to feed the cats. I don't want her testing or giving shots - she looks horrible after touching Orange and I'm scared her throat is going to close up while noone is here.

I'll be gone a week, so I'm worried about Orange with this setup - not getting shots or tested. I'm sure his numbers will rise, but even on his OTJ trail for 5 days he didn't go above 200 so maybe he'll be ok? I'm not sure what else to do. He doesn't have all the vaccines needed for boarding, and I wouldn't be able to screen a place where I'd be comfortable having them shooting him on this short notice anyway. Any suggestions out there or advice if this is going to be ok for him?

Have you tried talking to the vet techs at your clinic? Sometime they pet sit and should be able to test and shoot at least a BCS or perhaps once a day if they won't be able to monitor.

Is there anothe FDMB member in the area? Maybe someone who could just do PS tests and BCSs, too?

He's already on 0.1 units - can't do much of a BCS from there.

Re: 6/17 Orange AMPS 123 - Can't leave my sister here

I have to leave now :(

I'll sign back on tonight once I am there. Orange was 58 at +3 - thats a pretty big drop so I gave him a tiny bit of ice cream and left out some 9% carb food to make sure. He'll usually surf without it but didn't want to take any chances.

First thought: Does your sister have allergy meds with her? If not, she can get Benedryl over the counter at any pharmacy. That will help with the allergy. She can take a Benedry, wait a bit and then if she can test and shoot, she can then wash her hands. Alternatively, she can wear latex gloves. It will feel weird wearing them, but it will protect her from direct contact. What's also key is that she not touch her face until her hands are washed.

The other option is to call your vet's office and see if there's a tech who can come in.

Like others suggested, post on Health and Community to see if there is someone from FDMB who may be able to lend a hand.

Re: 6/17 Orange AMPS 123 - Can't leave my sister here

can she come over and feed more than twice a day? Same principle as an OTJ trial - if his pancreas is working, then small meals can help stimulate it to produce its own insulin. Large meals might overwhelm it. That might be enough to keep his numbers low without insulin. Really until the last day or two it looked like he might be ready for a trial, so he might be ok. Ideally he would be tested at least once a day too, but I certainly understand not wanting your sister to be hurt.

Re: 6/17 Orange AMPS 123 - Can't leave my sister here

I would try a vet tech. I got one in CA to come over twice a day for $20 to test & give shots. I just had to change Racci's time to suit the tech's hours. Then have your sister use a disposable surgical mask and those disposable vinyl gloves to feed if no member is nearby.

I'm sorry this happened. I know how you were looking forward to this.

Your sister could do the initial consult and explain the situation. This way at least you may be able to get a person to do hands on with Orange for 30 minutes a day, even if he is not getting 0.1u. They could be able to watch for signs of complications and get him to a vet if needed. Edit: Or your sister could do the insulin draw and direct, but not have to touch Orange?

It would be important to explain to the sitter that Orange is almost OTJ and may not need shots at all at this time. Pass along the SS and profile pages from here.

Re: 6/17 Orange AMPS 123 - Can't leave my sister here

Thank you everyone for your responses.

I'm at the vacation house now, and talked to my sister. We had gotten her allergey medicine yesterday, but it wasn't working this morning. Things are looking a lot better now though. She is feeling much better and wants to stay at the house. She said she thinks its only a big problem when she touches Orange. She still won't be able to test since it takes her a little while and she has to hold him in place. She is going to try putting on vinyl gloves and giving him a shot since that is really quick. I showed her how to draw a drop yesterday before I left - thats just holding the plunger in while inserting the needle into the pen then letting go. Not actually pulling the plunger back. That produces about half of his current 0.1 unit dose. I think he'll be ok with that without testing, and Sharon will still be around to make sure he is acting fine.

Beth - thank you for the sitter info. I'll email her to give her an update on whats going on and have her on standby if I need anything. Maybe also have her drop in to test at some point.

Re: 6/17 Orange AMPS 123 - Things are looking much better no

You are welcome for the information.

I hope your sister continues to improve and things go smoothly the rest of the week!

Even if you don't need the sitter this time, you may just want to meet and do a consult when you get back, so you will have a back-up going forward.
