Nice to see the green appearing in Cooper's ss - and what a lovely blue surf for him last night! He spent quite a few hours in normal numbers - which is so good for his body.

Looks like 5.0u is going to be a good dose, at least for the moment.

Back in the greens and getting close to a reduction point. Argh! I tested him at +7 and he was about 92 (average of 96 and 89 between my 2 meters). Tried feeding him a 5% snack before I headed to my dr's appt but he puked it all up and refused anything else before I left. Tested him at +9 just now and he's 72, so awfully close to reduction point of less than 68. Can vomiting lower their BG? Fed a little 12% snack to try and keep him surfing in case he's not ready for a reduction. Thoughts?

While the act of vomiting doesn't really lower the BG, the fact that there's no longer any food for the insulin to "work on" can.

Since Levemir generally has a lower nadir than Lantus, I would have tried the regular LC again when you got home...72 is still a safe number and while I totally understand you think "it's awfully close to 68 so I'd better do something", it's best to just stick with the LC food and see what happens.

Most of the time, just a little of their regular food is enough to get them up on their surf board and if it's not, that's useful information too!!

I know, I get scared! We'll just do low carb tonight if he starts getting really low and see what happens.

Great to see Cooper back into green numbers again today - his spreadsheet is looking awesome at the moment! :D Now come on Coopie - no more vomiting, just a nice surf please. :)

I know, I get scared!
I did too, especially the first few times Rosa got close to the reduction point - I had to be "talked down" from giving her carbs too early on a couple of occasions. You CAN do this though - because you're home testing you're in control of things and you can get his numbers back up quickly if he does drop under 68. :) :bighug:

Looking good today Cooper! :D You are doing a great job with him Millie. :bighug: Remember that any time you are worried, just post here for help. We've all been through the low numbers dance and remember what it felt like the first few times. You'll probably get more help than you need. ;)

I'll even tell you my first "under 50" story!!

I'd been told to give China some Karo, honey or syrup, or some "gravy" from a "gravy lovers" food, but the first time China dropped below 50, I saw that number, totally freaked and dumped about a cup of syrup into a bowl and let her go for it. I was shocked that she really liked it and proceeded to lap up quite a bit!

Needless to say, it brought her number up fast...and up...and up!!

Later, I found out it was supposed to be "a drop or two" of Karo/honey/syrup!! Oh well, she survived and we learned to take a deep breath first, then just do what we needed to do to keep her safe

Thank you guys! We've been lucky this week as both my husband and I were able to take a day off of work so that we were here Monday and Tuesday. Today I had a dr's appt so I was able to come home right before and after and my husband is working at home tomorrow. Then it's the weekend, thank goodness! But I worry about missing his low point during the day usually as it seems to be coming about +8 to +9 which is 2:30-3:30 in the afternoon. I work 15 mins from home (which takes 45 mins or more in rush hour) and am driving home every day at lunch to check him and can come home as late as 2:30, but really can't leave to check at 3:30 without my boss wondering where the heck I am. Plus with living in Atlanta with awful traffic, I'd get stuck on the interstate trying to get back to work only to turn right back around to try and get home by 6:30 for the PM shot. I'll just have to give him some low carb to low-medium carb food depending on how low he is when I check him at lunch since I might not be able to catch the lowest point.

Holy cow, Chris! You poor thing. :woot:

Just fyi, a good perspective is to think in terms of getting enough insulin into him to flatten out his cycles. Sometimes when you finally get to a dose that's getting a cat into good numbers, it can help to keep the cat there for a few cycles, even if it means giving a little food to keep the cat from earning a reduction. If it's hard to keep him over 68, then he really does need a reduction.

But in your situation, a little low carb food & keeping him over 68 so he can stay at this dose for a few cycles might be a good thing.

Very nice!!

If you want to give him a little of his regular low carb food, it could encourage him to get up on his surfboard tonight...you don't want to "fill him up", but a teaspoon or two could get him to surf the rest of the night for you

Since he dropped so much in one hour, went ahead and gave him some 12% and will see if that can get him to surf. Sheesh! Might be a long night. Exciting to see these colors though!
