China had a quiet night, sleeping on her favorite bed..Me....lol She does seem to be gaining a little weight (which she does need to do) and her coat isn't QUITE as scruffy looking. Maybe we're starting to make a little progress

Starting to see more blues!! YEAH!

This is my question ...Several times I've been told that China might be "bouncing off" another test number. Is there information here somewhere that explains this "bouncing"?

I get a few BG numbers that seem to be going in the right direction, then one that makes no sense, and I've been told she might be "bouncing off the good number", then when we get a higher number, once again, she might be "bouncing off the higher number", and I guess I just don't understand exactly what it is

Thanks again for all your help!

Re: 6/17 China AMPS 300 Explain bouncing?

I don't think there's one specific post that explains bouncing. What a bounce consists of is just what your described. What happens is that China's body has "forgotten" what normal BG levels feel like because chances are, China has been diabetic for longer than when the diagnosis was made. So, now that you're giving insulin, the insulin is bringing China's numbers back into a better range. If the numbers drop into what's now unfamiliar territory (i.e., "normal" or at least better numbers) or if the drop is fast, China's liver and pancreas go into panic mode. A stored form of glucose (glucagon) and counterregulatory hormones are released. These compounds cause BG numbers to rise. Hence the term "bounce" because numbers bounce back up. It can take up to 72 hours for the bounce to clear.

In most cases, the more time a kitty spends in lower numbers, the less frequent and the less extreme the bounces.

When a cat's BG drops to a lower number that she's seen in a while - like the blue numbers on your spreadsheet, it can trigger the pancreas and the liver to release "sugar" into the bloodstream to raise the numbers. It doesn't need to be a scary low number. Just a lot lower than what she has become used to. If that happens, we call it a "bounce". She "bounced off of" the lower number. Every cat seems to do this at some point, but the more she sees numbers like that, the less it tends to happen and the less extremely she'll bounce.

The lower number causes the bounce. The higher numbers that follow are the bounce.

I think there just might have been some confusion regarding the "bounce off the higher number". High numbers don't cause the bouncing. They are the end result.

Re: 6/17 China AMPS 300 Explain bouncing?

Oh OK!! Thanks for the explanations!! That makes much more sense now!!

Maybe someone should do a page explaining bouncing?...I'd think it would be a fairly often asked question.

All of us new to this adventure can use all the explanations we can get....lol
