Morning! Maggie's feeling good lately. Just being curious again, I was able to get a big enough drop to test with both the Alpha Trak and Relion Micro on one drop. The Relion meter read 67, so there is a 22 bg difference between the two meters. If I were using the Relion, I think Maggie possibly would be OTJ with all her good #'s lately?? I think I've only seen one other person here using the Alpha Trak that I remember. The first time the Relion read 19 bg, and I knew that wasn't correct. If the drop is too big, does the Relion read incorrect?

Re: 6/15 Ann & Maggie AMPS 89

In a pinch, I've boarded Six at the vet - they treat him like a medical vs. a boarding so he gets more attention. They know the drill with the testing, feeding, shots 12 hours apart, etc, but I did have to adjust his shot time a bit with their hours.
I've also just recently trained a neighbor who I trust. He was game and loves Six so I know I'm

Hi Amy and Six,
It's interesting to hear you had a good experience with boarding. I've been hesitant to board her as I'm worried they may not give her enough attention or give too much insulin. That is great you found a neighbor who was willing to learn. I'll have to make some calls. We have a lot of people who pet sit as their business and are bonded, so possibly I can find someone who will give shots. I was hoping Mags would be OTJ when I took a trip.

I cannot help you with meters either since I have had some issues with my relion and am back to using my freestyle but great number for her this morning

Re: 6/15 Ann & Maggie AMPS 89

Nice AMPS for Maggie. In response to your meter question. I sometimes did a comparison and finally just gave up and use the ReliOn.

Below is a consumer report on BG meters. There is also a post somewhere on the Board with the difference between the Alpha Trak and human meter readings. I think it is a 15% variance. I quit using the Alpha Trak because of the cost of the strips and the frequency of testing required. I use the ReliOn and have never had a problem.

Quick Picks: Best Blood Glucose Meters

To test blood glucose meters’ accuracy and consistency, CR contracted with an outside laboratory to test 13 devices against a standard laboratory test using blood samples from diabetic volunteers. To test the meters’ ease of use, CR engaged lay and expert panelists with diabetes to use and score each glucose monitor for size, speed, memory, and whether test strips required users to enter codes before testing.
OneTouch UltraMini ($20, $1.14 per strip)
Ascensia Contour ($80, $1.10 per strip)
ReliOn Ultima (Wal-Mart), a CR Best Buy ($9, $0.44 per strip)
Accu-Chek Compact Plus ($73, $1.10 per strip)
While the OneTouch was the only blood glucose meter receiving an excellent rating overall, the Ascensia and Accu-Chek were rated very good choices as was the ReliOn. All four models delivered readings in about 5 seconds. The Ascensia and the ReliOn can store hundreds more glucose readings than the OneTouch and upload them to a computer. (A newer version of the OneTouch that is just being introduced to the market is said to have additional memory and uploading capability.) The Ascensia and Accu-Chek models automatically code test strips.
How to Choose a Self-Test Kit
Use our Ratings. Pick a top-scoring model that has features that will make testing easier, such as a blood pressure monitor’s ability for more than one user to store readings.
Consider cost. Sometimes blood pressure and blood glucose monitors can be purchased at a discount. Glucose test strips can cost as much as $1,400 a year if testing three times a day, so be sure to consider their cost when buying a meter. Insurance does not usually cover blood pressure monitors, but might cover the cost of blood glucose meters and supplies.

Great numbers this morning!

Have you called your vet's office to find out if any of the techs pet sit? That's how I found my first DPS.

Hi Sienne. Yes, I've checked. They gave me the name of a client there who sits pets, but she doesn't have experience doing shots. I worry Maggie may think I've abandoned her if I board her. She was a feral, and may still have some emotional issues. I'll make some more calls today. Something will work out. Maybe I can shorten my trip to a few days rather than a week. My family sure won't understand it but...

Nice AMPS Maggie!

can you tell I like those AMPS?

hope you find someone, keep trying, I know you'll feel better if she can stay home rather than feeling abandoned at a boarders.

Re: 6/15 Ann & Maggie AMPS 89

Thanks Ronnie and Luna for the bright good wishes. She's come a long way since January.

Thanks Pat and Shadow, Mocha, Iorwen and Lisa. I have to give her a bg check soon,

Re: 6/15 Ann & Maggie AMPS 89

Awesome greens on Maggie! I wish I lived closer so I could help out with Maggie while you're away. I usually travel a lot, but after my last trip using 2 DPS vet techs from my vet's office, Kasha made it clear that she doesn't like me going away if it means other people syringe feeding her, testing and injecting. So... I think if we skipped the syringe feeding, it would have been less traumatic, but they were just trying to make sure she ate...

You know, when I called my vet's office to ask about pet sitters, they never offered any of the vet techs as options - just mentioned pet sitters they recommend. It was when I was actually in the office that I talked to some of the vet techs and I found that they would do pet sitting/injections/pilling/etc. sort of on the side. That's how I found the 2 vet techs who currently have keys to my house in case I need them... When is your trip? You might want to consider specifically asking if any of the vet techs do that or actually just talking to some of them to see if they do...

Hi Krys, We use the Relion and it seems to be pretty consistent with itself. Much better than the True Test, which was the one we started out with. When I asked Monique about trying to compare our test results with the Vet's results on the cat-specific Alpha Track, she said not to even consider it.
Hope you find a good pet sitter.

Hmmm Interesting about the comparing it with Vet's Alpha Trak. Was that because of the big difference?

That's nice of you Heidi and Doodles- I am much further south, darn.

Thanks Krys - I think I will check with one of the Vet Techs personally. I've gotten to know them, too, since Mags has been there quite often lately.
