Hi everyone,
Angel has been on levemir since 6/19 and I've only posted her numbers once or twice, but I wanted to, once again, share how well she's doing -- and this time maybe even get a little advice. She's doing so well that I think she may be considering going OTJ ...and though I'm somewhat of an old hat - I have no experience with this part of the process.
SHE seems to know exactly what she's doing :) and I really think this is the most stress free diabetic cat experience anyone could ever have.
Seriously , she's had amazing numbers from the very first shot.
But unless this is a fluke she just got her dose reduced to 0.05u -- so...

hey Michelle, wheezer has been on .05 for about a year but cannot get him OTJ. stubborn little ***********
whatchya need to know?

Wow....I hope one of the really experienced dosing folks come along to advise you. IMHO, I'd wonder if you might want to try an OTJ trial. Is .05u equivalent to 1 drop the way you dose? I see a lot of kitties getting to 1 drop and then when they hit a number this low (34), they start an OTJ trial. There are specific instructions to that which I don't readily have. Hoping Sienne, Libby, Jill, or one of the others comes along with that information.

Great job!

I guess my plan is to give her the 0.05 and see what happens. She may be like Wheezer and stay on that dose forever... ((Dian))
But if she drops low on that dose - do I just start the no insulin trial right then? Just like... okay... "no soup for you!" ??

Geez, I've been cheering others on during their OTJ trial a million times and I don't know the answer to that.
I guess it just seems so unreal...

Anyway, we're not there yet - I just wanna be prepared.

I'm just wandering around between ironing (yuk) and have to say - WOW! Look at little Angel!
Gosh, I don't know what your 0.05u dose looks like but I would have quit shooting already! What lovely numbers!
She was doing great on the earlier dose too. As Marje said once she hit that 34... it says to me - time for a trial!
It is your call of course BUT:

Official OTJ instructions... in case you are ready to try.

  • Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas).

If he/she is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he/she is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his/her number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his/her pancreas is working!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give him/her the support he needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

I am tempted to see what would happen. But she was getting 0.1 for the last 4 cycles and hasn't actually had a 0.05 dose.
I don't want that dose to feel neglected. ;-)

I think I may be way more attached to the insulin shots than she is...

You are so funny! And I'm not gonna' argue with that last comment, hahahaha!!!

some can go OTJ right from the .1 and then there are the others :YMSIGH: . you can run a few cycles at .o5 and if still going low then OTJ for ya.
why are my 2 fosters not breaking? I got a bad bunch. 2 lemons

Nooooo!! Dian, them boyz is not lemons!
Maybe they just like all that attention - or maybe they just think they'd be more likely to get adopted by somebody else if they were OTJ... they know a good thing when they see it. :)

I gave Angel her first shot at 0.05u -- we'll see how it goes. :)

I'm with CD -- I'm not sure I could measure 0.05u and I'd probably go for the trial. If you an measure the dose, go for it. Angel will tell you when she's ready.

This is soooo exciting!!!! Go Angel!!!!!

Someone explained to me once that when you are shooting you feel like you have some control. When you do an OTJ trial, you are at the mercy of the cat. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

awesome!!!! I take a day off and look what I missed, wow!

It can't hurt to do a few cycles on 0.05 to help wean yourself off of giving shots. Ask Jill how hard it was to get me to stop shooting. You can control the numbers when you're giving insulin, and I think taking off the training wheels is sometimes harder for the person than for the cat. I think that is even more true for those of us who do this for such a long time.

If she drops low again on 0.05, or if she stays nice and stable for several days on 0.05, then you do have to stop shooting. Sorry.

michelle! i take a few days off and look what i missed!
