Re: 6/13 Trixie AMPS 180 +3 133 - small vines for Mario plea
This isn't a major situation, but I know how magical LL prayers are, so I would appreciate any spares you can send in my civvie Mario's direction!
Mario has had a sebacious cyst on his neck for eons now. Over the past couple years, though, it did get quite a bit bigger, to the point where he now scratches at it and breaks the skin open. When he was at the vet in January, she told me to keep an eye on it, in case it ruptures, and she gave me a spray AB to use on it (which just annoyed him and made him scratch even more!). Last night, it was looking particularly icky to me, so I took him to the vet this morning to see if it had ruptured and/or was infected. In general, I got decent news. The cyst hasn't ruptured and isn't infected. Basically what's happening is that it has gotten so large that it's putting pressure on the skin, and is causing a permanent state of irritation and inflammation...that's why he's scratching at it. So, she shaved and cleaned the area (it looks REALLY wicked now...poor Mario. I can't wait for that fur to grow back.), and gave us a different topical antibiotic to use on it. This one is an ointment, and contains a corticosteroid as well as something else that I can't remember right now. Naturally, the steroid aspect makes me nervous, but we have to do something to sooth the itching, reduce the inflammation, and hopefully get the skin to heal. He'll get that once a day, and we have to use a warm wash cloth later in the day, to remove any build up of the ointment.
He needs to go back in 10 days for a recheck. If the skin isn't healing well, we'll have to explore other options, such as draining the cyst with a needle to relieve some of the pressure. However, that's not a permanent solution; it will probably just refill, which is why we didn't try that today...taking a conservative approach. There are other possible options, too, but one step at a time.
Naturally, the best solution would be to surgically remove it, but given his age, his other health issues, and the fact that this is benign, I'm not big on taking that risk, and the vet seems to agree. She said that, despite how it looks, this IS pretty minor. If he were a younger cat with no health issues, I wouldn't hesitate to have it removed, but I'm really afraid the trauma of surgery will send him into a downward spiral. I hate having to balance all these decisions, though...I wish it could be cut-and-dried!
Aside from the cyst, Mario is his usual spunky self, so it's really not affecting him in any way, other than being an irritation.
Any healing thoughts, vines, and prayers for getting Mario's skin to heal are greatly, greatly appreciated!!
Now...I'm heading out for an insulin run - woohoo!!
