Good morning. AMPS 349
Good morning! We are letting him drop a bit before feeding him more. Hopefully not too much at a time, but into the green.Hi Jill. I see he had a better AMPS today and he’s on his way down. This looks like a typical cycle for Merlin. Good morning!

Interesting! Thats what we have been doing lately. Only I suspect that the carbs are a bit high. I have been thinking about giving a bit lower carb main meal in the AM to start with. Then shifting all of the snacks down in carbs just a bit. Maybe tomorrow…or maybe wait a little while longer to see if this slow trend keeps up. Merlin seems to randomly start dropping big, and I am not sure we have anything to do with it sometimes.Jill, you might like to read this thread about feeding the curve sometime when you have time to set down with a

Sounds very reasonable. One question, though. When he doesn’t drop fast with this feeding the carb system, he misses out on the food he should be eating calorie wise. Like today, he didnt have that second spoon of 7.7 as he does when he drops fast, so that’s 10g of food he will never get this cycle, or if it happens again tonight, 20 g of food he will never get. I have to weigh him again, but it seems like he has lost more weight because he isn’t getting enough food. How can we fix this, if he wont eat a bigger main meal?In the cycles he is bouncing, there is nothing you can do about it, and he won’t drop down into lower numbers.
If you want to try a different carb that is fine. I think you know enough now to work out if it is working it not. But don’t just try one day and then decide it’s not working. I think I would give him a bit longer on this regime before trying something else as I think he is settling down a bit……I’m whispering this so he won’t hear!
Remember it takes time for his body to get used to the insulin as it is a hormone.
When you do try something new, only do one thing at a time and give it a chance to work. For example just change the preshot meal or change the +1 snack but not both.
If he looks like he is bouncing and is still in higher numbers, still feed him his snacks but make them low carb . The snacks are not just for feeding the curve, they are for giving him food through out the cycle instead of all in one go at shot time.Sounds very reasonable. One question, though. It’s just hard to cram enough calories into two or three 8-10 g spoons. I guess we are just limited here as to what foods we can get that are lc and also high calorie. Oh well, I will keep hunting. Thanks, Bron.If he looks like he is bouncing and is still in higher numbers, still feed him his snacks but make them low carb . Thank you Kyle! I will look for some freeze dried meat. I reckon they are very low carb? Not a lot of choices here in Ireland. And thanks for the zoomed-out perspective! I was feeling a little low and hopeless about Merlin’s bony condition. Maybe we are on the way…I found a great way to boost calories was mixing in some freeze-dried morsels like Stella and Chewys as they are quite calorie-dense
not sure what options you might have in the York area though.
If I zoom out on Merlin's SS and take a thousand-food-view as they say, I see a downward trend in his AMPS and PMPS numbers and more yellow and blue filling in mid-cycle. Progress Jill! The more time he spends in those lower numbers the more able he is to process nutrients and gain weight. Great to see!
I think it's a very good idea to experiment with lowering the carbs a bit. You're just going to have to play around with it a bit and see how it goes. You'll be right there to protect him. Perhaps you can get him into better numbers with just carb adjustments.Interesting! Thats what we have been doing lately. Only I suspect that the carbs are a bit high. I'm seeing signs that he could be settling down a bit, too.In the cycles he is bouncing, there is nothing you can do about it, and he won’t drop down into lower numbers.
